  • Image binarization is an important preprocessing to identify objects of interest by dividing pixels into background and objects. Usually binarization methods are classified into global and local thresholding approaches. In this paper, we propose an efficient and adaptive binarization method for the character segmentation by combining both advantages of the global and the local thresholding methods. Experimental results with the korean character images present that the proposed method binarizes character image faster and better than other local binarization methods.

  • Moving object detection system has been an emerging research field in various advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and surveillance system. In this paper, we propose two optical flow based moving object detection methods at dynamic scenes. Both proposed methods consist of three successive steps; pre-processing, foreground segmentation, and post-processing steps. Two proposed methods have the same pre-processing and post-processing steps, but different foreground segmentation step. Pre-processing calculates mainly optical flow map of which each pixel has the amplitude of motion vector. Dense optical flows are estimated by using Farneback technique, and the amplitude of the motion normalized into the range from 0 to 255 is assigned to each pixel of optical flow map. In the foreground segmentation step, moving object and background are classified by using the optical flow map. Here, we proposed two algorithms. One is Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based background subtraction, which is applied on optical map. Another is adaptive thresholding based foreground segmentation, which classifies each pixel into object and background by updating threshold value column by column. Through the simulations, we show that both optical flow based methods can achieve good enough object detection performances in dynamic scenes.

  • TFT-LCD(Thin Film transistor liquid crystal display) has become actively used front panel display technology with increasing market. Intrinsically there is region of non uniformity with low contrast that to human eye is perceived as defect. As the gray level difference between the defect and the background is hardly distinguishable, conventional thresholding and edge detection techniques cannot be applied to detect the defect. Between the patterned and un-patterned LCD defects, this paper deals with un-patterned LCD defects by using independent component analysis, adaptive thresholding and skewness. Our method showed strong results even on noised LCD images and worked successfully on the manufacturing line.

  • A new image coding technique has been proposed based on the wavelet transform. To achieve lower ceding rates and good qualities in reconstructed images, some of wavelet coefficients were removed by thresholding and quantized in accordance with the sensitivity of the human visual system(HVS). For each block of subimages in wavelet transform domain, block thresholding scheme has been used to remove the unimportant wavelet coefficients according to the frequency characteristic and statistical property of wavelet coefficients. The location information of quantized blocks and removed blocks were encoded using run-length coder which is effective for the exponential distribution. Quantized coefficients were encoded using variable length coder which matches well to their distribution. Simulation results show that the reconstructed images maintain high quality with the low bit rate, below 1.0 bits per pel.

  • It is not easy to reconstruct the geometrical characteristics of the distorted images captured by the devices. One of the most popular optimization methods is fast iterative shrinkage/ thresholding algorithm. In this paper, to deal with its approximation error and the turbulence of the decrease process, an adaptive proximal conjugate gradient (APCG) framework is proposed. It contains three stages. At first stage, a series of adaptive penalty matrices are generated iterate-to-iterate. Second, to trade off the reconstruction accuracy and the computational complexity of the resulting sub-problem, a practical solution is presented, which is characterized by solving the variable ellipsoidal-norm based sub-problem through exploiting the structure of the problem. Third, a correction step is introduced to improve the estimated accuracy. The numerical experiments of the proposed algorithm, in comparison to the favorable state-of-the-art methods, demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method and its potential.

  • In this paper. we present methods that extract lung regions from chest EBT(electron beam tomography) images then segment the extracted lung region into lung lobes. We use histogram based thresholding and mathematical morphology for extracting lung regions. For detecting pulmonary fissures, we use edge detector and knowledge-based search method. We suggest this edge detector, which uses adaptive filter scale, to work very well for real edge and insensitive for edge by noise. Our experiments showed about 95% accuracy or higher in extracting lung regions and about 5 pixel distance error in detecting pulmonary fissures.

  • A compressive sensing based iterative scheme for reducing both the impulsive noise as well as the clipping noise is proposed for OFDM-based communication systems. Nonlinear blanking using adaptive thresholds is used in the 1st stage followed by two consecutive compressive sensing based detection with the aid of decision feedback for reducing the BER gradually. Our simulation results revealed an SNR gain of 4.5dB at the BER of $10^{-5}$.

  • The wide dynamic range and severely attenuated contrast in mediastinal area appearing in typical chest radiographs have often caused difficulties in effective visualization and diagnosis of lung diseases. This paper proposes a new adaptive image enhancement technique which potentially solves this problem and there by improves observer performance through image processing. In the proposed method image processing is applied to the chest radiograph with different processing parameters for the lung field and mediastinum adaptively since there are much differences in anatomical and imaging properties between these two regions. To achieve this the chest radiograph is divided into the lung and mediastinum by gray level thresholding using the cumulative histogram and the dynamic range compression and local contrast enhancement are carried out selectively in the mediastinal region. Thereafter a gray scale transformation is performed considering the JND(just noticeable difference) characteristic for effective image displa. The processed images showed apparenty improved contrast in mediastinum and maintained moderate brightness in the lung field. No artifact could be observed. In the visibility evaluation experiment with 5 radiologists the processed images with better visibility was observed for the 5 important anatomical structures in the thorax.

  • Signals of the Electroencephalogram (EEG) can reflect the electrical background activity of the brain generated by the cerebral cortex nerve cells. This has been the mostly utilized signal, which helps in effective analysis of brain functions by supervised learning methods. In this paper, an approach for improving the accuracy of EEG signal classification is presented to detect epileptic seizures. Moreover, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is incorporated as a preprocessing step and Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is used for denoising the signal adequately. Feature extraction of EEG signals is accomplished on the basis of three parameters namely, Standard Deviation, Correlation Dimension and Lyapunov Exponents. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is trained by incorporating Levenberg-Marquardt(LM) training algorithm into the backpropagation algorithm that results in high classification accuracy. Experimental results reveal that the methodology will improve the clinical service of the EEG recording and also provide better decision making in epileptic seizure detection than the existing techniques. The proposed EEG signal classification using feed forward Backpropagation Neural Network performs better than to the EEG signal classification using Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) classifier in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity.

  • In this paper, we propose a robust clutter pre-thresholding method using background adaptive Threshold Map for the clutter rejection in the complex coastal environment. The proposed algorithm is composed of the use of Threshold Map's and method of its calculation. Additionally we also suggest an automatic decision method of Thresold Map's update. Experimental results on some sets of real infrared image sequence show that the proposed method could remove clutters effectively without any loss of detection rate for the aim target and reduce processing time dramatically.
