  • Objective : This study is performed to evaluate the clinical effect of acupuncture to acu-points in the normal side by means of amperage measured from chong points. Methods : Among the outpatients with ankle sprain who visited to Department of Acupuncture & Maxibustion, Jaseng oriental medicine hospital from 21, December 2000 to 10, February 2001, we selected 11 persons who showed normal finding in the X-ray. They were divided into two groups. One group was treated with acupuncture to acu-points in the painful side and the other was treated with acupuncture to acu-points in the normal side. Before and after acupuncture, we measured the amperage from their chong points. We selected 10 persons who we thought they were healthy as a control group. We also measured the amperage from their chong points. Results : Between the control and the ankle sprain group, there were significant differences of differences between the amperages of Rt. chong point and Lt. thong point of the same name. Between the group treated with acupuncture to acu-points in the painful side and the group treated with acupuncture to acu-points in the normal side, there were no significant differences of differences between the amperages of Rt. chong point and Lt. chong point of the same name. Conclusion : This result indicated that the acupuncture to acu-points in the painful side was not less effective than the acupuncture to acu-points in the normal side, and so the more study is needed continuously.

  • Background: Migraine is a common disabling headache that affects every aspect of a person's life. Auricular acupuncture is a cost-effective treatment modality for the management of painful neurological conditions. Previous studies have shown the beneficial effects of a combination of ear points in the management of migraines. However, no studies have evaluated the efficacy of a single auricular point (i.e., sympathetic point) in migraine. Thus, this study evaluated the efficacy of sympathetic points on pain intensity and depression levels in patients with migraine. Methods: In this randomized controlled study, 100 patients with migraine aged 18-45 years were randomly divided into either an auricular acupuncture group (AAG) (n = 50) or a placebo control group (PCG) (n = 50). The AAG underwent needling at the sympathetic point (an auricular acupuncture point), whereas the PCG underwent needling at a non-acupuncture point for 20 minutes daily for 7 days. Assessments were performed before and after the intervention using a 6-item headache impact test (HIT-6) and Beck depression inventory (BDI) scale. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 16. Results: In within-group analysis, the AAG showed a significant reduction in HIT-6 and BDI, whereas the PCG showed a significant increase in HIT-6 and a significant reduction in BDI. In between-groups analyses, HIT-6 reduced significantly in the AAG compared with that in the PCG, whereas BDI reduced significantly in the PCG compared with that in the AAG. Conclusion: In patients with migraine, needling at the sympathetic point produces a greater reduction in the pain intensity level and lesser reduction in the depression level compared to needling at a non-acupuncture point.

  • Objective : The aim of this research was to investigate the depressive effect of acupuncture on Dong and depletion on Fungchi-point(G20) in stroke patients. Methods : We measured the blood pressure of the patients who were admitted in the Oriental Medical hospital of Dongeui medical center from 21. Dec. 2001. to 2. Oct. 2002. 41 stroke patients were devided into two groups. 15 patients were treated by acupuncture on Dong. The other 26 patients were treated by depletion on Fungchi-point(G20). The activity of daily living was measured. If systolic blood pressure was over 160 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure was over 90mmHg, acupuncture on Dong and depletion on Fungchi-point(G20) were performed. Then 30 minutes and 60 minutes later, systolic. diastolic blood pressure and pulse rates were measured. Results : After 30 minute of treatment, both acupuncture on Dong and depletion on Fungchi-point(G20) significantly depressed systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. After 60 minute of treatment, both acupuncture on Dong and depletion on Fungchi-point(G20) were significant in depressing systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. Pulse rates significantly changed in depletion on Fungchi-point(G20) but did not significantly change in acupuncture on Dong. Conclusions: These results suggest that both acupuncture on Dong and depletion on Fungchi-point(G20) are effective in depressing systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure.

  • Objective : Acupuncture, one of the Oriental medical treatment techniques in East Asia, is growing in popularity all over the world. Based on bibliographical and clinical data, the depth of needling, i.e. superficial or deep needling, has been considered to be a variable as potential modifiers of needling effects, such as localization, manipulation of the needle, or elicitation of DeQi. The purpose of this review is to summarize clinical trials using minimal acupuncture and to evaluate its appropriateness as a control. Methods : A survey of computerized literature searches for randomized controlled trials using minimal acupuncture revealed that a total of 10 studies were published until April 2008. Results : Results obtained from clinical trials showed that acupuncture were more effective than minimal acupuncture in 3 out of 10 trials, while others were no more effective than control. However, minimal acupuncture might neither be a inert placebo nor be indiscriminable. Conclusion : Minimal acupuncture as 'placebo' controls seems misleading and scientifically unacceptable.

  • In this paper, we study about a acupuncture point and a non-acupuncture point resistance characteristics for acupuncture research. For this study, we devised resistance variation measurement system. This system is consist of 4-channel skin resistance measuring parts, filters, 12bit A/D convertor, 8051 micro-controller, and personal computer The developed system insert a low current to skin and obtains voltages from standard resistor that is convected to measurement circuit in series. The obtained voltage is converted to 12bit digital signal. Therefore the converted signal is changed to skin resistance by calculation in the personal computer. As the results of experiment, the resistance of acupuncture point and non-acupuncture point are different from each other. The acupuncture point has very fast current flows than the other non- acupuncture point.

  • Acupuncture is so effective and simple to use in the pain and dysfunction syndrome of TMD. Acupuncture treatment is a point-specific. So, the selection of acupuncture point is very important. According to the traditional meridian theory, we select the points; local points around TMJ and mastication muscles(ST6, ST7, GB20, GB21) and remote point(LI4). And if there is another pain, one or two other points are added. Both neural and humoral mechanism play an important role in acupuncture analgesia. The discovery of spinal gate mechanisms shows somatic stimulation can induce pain inhibition. Humoral mechanism has been established from the discovery of opioid receptors and endogenous opioids. Acupuncture induces a relaxation in the patient, which further decreases the muscle tension.
