The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between child’s temperament and behavior problem according to child’s sex. The subjects for this study were children’s mothers of 2nd grade selected from elementary schools in Busan. Han, Sae-Young’s questionnaires(1996) on child’s temperament and Kim, Min-Kyung’s questionnaires(1998) on child’s behavior problem were used. Statistical techniques such as t-test, Pearson’s correlation, multiple regression, canonical were used. The results were as follows : (1) According to sex, there were no significant differences in child’s temperament. But there were significant differences in child’s behavior problem. The boys got higher scores than girls in hyperactive/distractive behavior and in hostile/aggressive behavior. (2) There were significant correlations between child’s emotionality and hyperactive/distractive behavior, between child’s emotionality and anxious/fearful behavior, between child’s emotionality and hostile/ aggressive behavior, and between child’s activity and hyperactive/distractive behavior. (3) The predicted variables for child’s hyperactive/distractive behavior were emotionality and activity. The predicted variable for chid’s anxious/fearful behavior and hostile/aggressive behavior was emotionality. (4) Among three dimensions of boy’s temperament, the effective variable was emotionality. And among three dimensions of boy’s behavior problem were anxious/fearful behavior and hostile/aggressive behavior. Among three dimensions of girl’s temperament, the effective variable was emotionality. And among three dimensions of girl’s problem behavior was anxious/fearful behavior. Implications of this study were discussed in terms of child’s temperament and behavior problem.
In this study of the influence of marital conflict and of children's temperament and emotion regulation on problem behavior, 194 mothers of 3- to 5-year-old children responded to the O'Leary- Poter Scale(1980), the Emotionality, Activity and Shyness scale(Buss & Plomin, 1984) and the Emotion Regulation Checklist(Shields & Cicchetti, 1997); teachers rated children's behavior on the Problem Behavior Questionnaire(Behar & Stringfield, 1974). Data were analyzed by independent t-tests, correlations, and multiple regressions. Results demonstrated that shyness, activity, and emotion regulation had direct effects on hostile-aggressive behaviors. Shy temperament had a direct effect on fearful-anxious behavior. Both marital conflict and temperament influenced hostile-aggressive behaviors indirectly through emotion regulation, implying a crucial role of emotion regulation in preschoolers' social development.
This study explored the relationships among child temperament, mothering daily hassles, and children's social adjustment in 254 kindergartens and childcare centers. The mothers of the participants completed the measures of child temperament and mothering daily hassles. The social adjustment in daycare was assessed through the rating provided by the children's teachers. Correlations and regressions were used for the analyses. The results showed that sociability, activity and soothability were related to social adjustment that attention-span, soothability, emotionality and activity were related to the mothering daily hassles that mothering daily hassles by children's challenging behavior were negatively related to the social competence and positively internalizing problems and that sociability and activity were useful to predict children's social adjustment in kindergartens and childcare centers.
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between preschoolers' temperament, mothers' parenting behaviors, and ability to delay gratification. A sample of 131 preschool children aged from 4 to 5 participated in a delay-of-gratification experiment, as reconstructed by Rodriguez and his colleagues (2005). Mothers answered questionnaires on their parenting behaviors and children's temperament. Data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regressions. Children's activity as well as mothers' warmth and control predicted the ability to delay gratification; significant interaction effects were found between children's activity and maternal warmth on the ability to delay gratification. It would be plausible to intervene in children's activity level and improve the ability to delay gratification.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of children's temperament, parent-child communication, peer relationships on children's cognitive and affective happiness. The participants consisted of 396 elementary school students aged 10-13 dwelling in Jeonbuk province. Data was analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, regression analysis using the SPSS 18.0 program. The most salient results from this study were as follows: first, there were statistically significant differences in the children's happiness according to academic performance and family's economic level; children who considered themselves to have good grades and to have a higher standard of living were happier than other groups. However, there was no significant difference in children's happiness in relation to gender. Second, children's temperament(sociability, activity), parent-child open communication and peer relationships were positively associated with the children's cognitive and affective happiness. Children's emotional temperament, parent-child problem communication were negatively associated with the children's cognitive and affective happiness. Third, as the results of regression analysis, parent-child open communication, children's temperament(activity, sociability), peer relationships were considered to be the most influential factors in explaining cognitive happiness. And parent-child open communication, parent-child problem communication, children's temperament(activity) were influential factors in explaining affective happiness. In conclusion, children's happiness is critically affected not only by internal variables but also environmental ones such as parents and peers.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of preschooler's temperament on peer play activity, focusing on the mediation of mothers' social interaction parenting behaviors Methods: 1695 mothers of preschoolers completed questionnaires on children's temperament and peer play behaviors, and mothers' parenting behaviors. Data were analyzed by regression analyses by SPSS 18.0. Results: First, preschoolers' sociability exerted positive effects on good peer play behaviors(play interaction) and negative effects on the bad peer play behaviors (disruption, disconnection) and both were partially mediated by mothers' social interaction parenting behaviors. Second, preschoolers' emotionality exerted negative effects on good peer play behaviors and positive effects on the bad peer play behaviors and both were partially mediated by mothers' social interaction parenting behaviors. Preschoolers' activity exerted positive effects on good peer play behaviors and negative effects on the bad peer play behaviors and both were partially mediated by mothers' social interaction parenting behaviors. Conclusion/Implications: These findings provide preliminary evidence that mothers' social interaction parenting behavior partially mediate the effects of preschoolers' temperament on peer play behaviors. Implications for the use of intervention targeting specific temperament have been discussed.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of maternal control strategies on the relationship between preschoolers' temperament and compliance/noncompliance. A total of 125 mothers with preschoolers aged 3 and 4 years participated in this study. Preschoolers' temperament was reported by mothers. Maternal control strategies and preschoolers' compliance/noncompliance were observed in the laboratory using a clean-up task. There were four major findings. First, preschoolers with higher levels of activity exhibited less compliance, and preschoolers with higher levels of adaptability and activity displayed more noncompliance. Second, preschoolers whose mothers used fewer commands and more compliments displayed more compliance and less noncompliance. Third, mothers who rated their children higher in activity level used more commands with their children. Finally, the use of maternal commands mediated the association between preschoolers' activity level and compliance/noncompliance. When preschoolers' activity level and maternal control strategies were considered together to predict preschoolers' compliance/noncompliance, the relationship between activity level and compliance/noncompliance became nonsignificant. These findings suggest that the effects of temperament on compliance/noncompliance are indirect through maternal control strategies.
This study examines the effects of parental variable(parental support and supervision), temperament(activity level, attention span/persistence, and emotionality) and the internal locus of control on self-regulation of children. Data were collected from 455 5th and 6th graders and analyzed with Pearson's correlations and pathway analysis. The results were as follows : Children's temperament, internal locus of control and parental variable directly affected children's self-regulation. Parental variables mediated between children's temperament and internal locus of control and self-regulation. Internal locus of control mediated between children's temperament and self-regulation: in addition, the most important variable predicting children's self-regulation was children's attention span/persistence temperament.
