To identify and isolate anticancer active compounds from Solanum nigrum, S. nigrum was extracted with MeOH and then fractionated with various organic solvents ($CH_2Cl_2$, EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$). The cytotoxic effects of the MeOH extracts from S. nigrum and its organic solvent-soluble fractions were also tested in HT29 cells. All the MeOH extracts of S. nigrum and its organic-solvent extracts induced cytotoxicity in the HT29 cells. Among the extracts, $H_2O$ was the most effective. The $H_2O$ extract was purified further by repeated silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, Diaion HP- 20, and RP-18 column chromatography. An active anticancer compound, Des-N-26-methylene-dihydrotomatidine, was isolated with a molecular weight of 416 and a molecular formula of $C_{28}H_{48}O_2$. Analysis of the cytotoxic effects of Des-N-26-methylene-dihydrotomatidine on the HT29 cells compared to those of tomatine and tomatidine are similar in its structure, is higher than tomatidine above the 40 ${\mu}g/ml$ concentration, but lower than tomatine. This is the first study to describe the anticancer activity of Des-N-26-methylene-dihydrotomatidin, isolated from S. nigrum. Des-N-26- methylene-dihydrotomatidine seems to have potential as a natural bioactive compound.
Objectives : We studied anti-allergic effects of Cinnamomi Ramulus(CR) herbal acupuncture and Cinnamomi Ramulus extract. Methods : In vivo, animals were herbal-acupunctured with CR at both ST36s three times for 5 days. Then, we induced active systemic anaphylatic shock using compound 48/80 in ICR mice, and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis using anti-DNP IgE in Sprague Dawley rat. In vitro, we measured cell viability, ${\beta}$ -hexosaminidase release and the expressions of IL-4, TNF-${\alpha}$ and COX-2 mRNA in RBL-2H3 cells after treatment of various concentrations of CR extract. Results : In vivo, CR herbal acupuncture pretreatments at both ST36s inhibited compound 48/80-induced active systemic anaphylatic shock. Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis was inhibited by CR herbal acupuncture pretreatments at both ST36s and optional points. In vitro, CR extract treatments did not affect on cell viability and inhibited ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase release. CR extract treatments also decreased the expressions of IL-4, TNF-${\alpha}$ and COX-2 mRNA in RBL-2H3 cells. Conclusions : These results suggest that CR herbal acupuncture and CR extract should be beneficial in the inhibition of allergic inflammatory response.
Objectives We studied on anti-allergic effects of Ganoderma lucidum herbal acupuncture(GHA) and Ganoderma lucidum extract(GE). Methods In vivo, Animals were herbal-acupunctured GHA at both B13s three times for 5 days. Then, we investigated compound 48/80-induced active systemic anaphylatic shock using ICR mice and anti-DNP IgE-induced passive cutaneous anaphylaxis using Sprague Dawley rat. In vitro, we measured cell viability, b-hexosaminidase release, IL-4 and TNF-a from RBL-2H3 cells, and nitric oxide from Raw264.7 cell after treatment of GE of various concentrations. Results In vivo, GHA pretreatments at both B13s inhibited compound 48/80-induced active systemic anaphylatic shock. Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis were inhibited by GHA10 and OP. In vitro, $0.1\;{\sim}\;2%$ GE treatments were not affect on cell viability and inhibited b-hexosaminidase release, IL-4, TNF-a and nitric oxide. Conclusions These results suggest that GHA and GE may be beneficial in the inhibition of allergic inflammatory response.

This paper presents an automated subsurface micro void detection technique based on pulsed infrared thermography for inspecting epoxy molding compounds (EMC) used in electronic device packaging. Subsurface micro voids are first detected and visualized by extracting a lock-in amplitude image from raw thermal images. Binary imaging follows to achieve better visualization of subsurface micro voids. A median filter is then applied for removing sparse noise components. The performance of the proposed technique is tested using 36 EMC samples, which have subsurface (below $150{\mu}m{\sim}300{\mu}m$ from the inspection surface) micro voids ($150{\mu}m{\sim}300{\mu}m$ in diameter). The experimental results show that the subsurface micro voids can be successfully detected without causing any damage to the EMC samples, making it suitable for automated online inspection.

This paper presents the results of catalytic endo- to exo- isomerization of saturated poly cyclic compound. Several zeolites were tested and influences of, Si/Al ratio and Structures of the zeolites on the reaction were investigated. The results showed that Y zeolites were more active than other zeolites, because of its large pore size and relative strong acidity. In all Y zeolites with different Si/Al, Y-5.4 is best. In all the zeolites tested, Y calcined at $450^{\circ}C$ was favorable. Still now the aluminium chloride catalyst is more active than zeolites. However, considering of environmental problems, corrosion, and treatment can make the zeolite catalyst substitute the aluminium chloride catalyst.

Compounds 1 - 12 were tested for their growth inhibitory effects against tumor cell lines using two different 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and sulforhodamine B protein (SRB) assays and antimicrobial activity. The cytotoxic activity of methyl-4-[{(2E)-3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienyl}oxy]-3-methoxy benzoate (1) exhibit more active than that of 5-fluorouracil (11) on human oral epithelioid carcinoma (KB, ATCC No. OCL 17) cell lines. But this compound (1) on human skin melanoma (SK-MEL-3, HBT 69) cell lines shows less active than that of adriamycin (12). However, compound 9 showed the antimicrobial activity against S. epidermidis (MIC, 15.625 ㎍/㎖), S. aureus, C. albicans (MIC, 31.25 ㎍/㎖), S. mutans, S. typhimurium, P. putida (MIC. 125 ㎍/㎖) and P. aeruginosa (MIC, 500 ㎍/㎖).

Geranium (Pelargonium inquinans Ait) leaves were extracted with $80\%$ MeOH, and partitioned into n-hexane, ethyl acetate, BuOH and $H_2O$ to isolate the anticoagulant principles. The EtOAc fraction was found to be the most active, and was further purified using silica and octadecylisilane column chromatography employing a bioassay-guided fractionation method. The active compound was isolated and identified as $1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloyl-\beta-D-glucopyranose$(PGG) (compound I). The isolated anticoagulant significantly prolonged the activated partial thrombin time (APTT) and thrombin time (TT) using normal human plasma. One microgram of $1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloyl-\beta-D-glucopyranose$ showed 0.063 heparin units in the APTT and 2.73 heparin units in the TT for anti-thrombosis. This is the first report of the isolation of PGG from geranium plants.

Antimutagenic effects of kale juice on the mutagenicity induced by $B_{1}(AFB_{1})$ N-methyl-N'-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) in Salmonella assay system were studied. The freeze dried kale juice significantly reduced the mutagenicity induced by $AFB_{1}$ in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and TA98. However, the kale juice exhibited less inhigbitory effect on the mutagenicity induced by MNNG as the concentrations of the juice sample increased. Also, kale juice after dialysis (>12,000, Mw) appeared to have 42.3∼89.5% of inhibitory effects against $AFB_{1}$, however, the dialyzate did not show any inhibitory effect against MNNG. To separate and identify the antimutagenic compounds from the kale juice, the dialyzates were further fractioned by using Sepharose CL-6B-200 gel filtration. Fraction number 13 showed the strong antimutagenic activity against $AFB_{1}$, and the fraction exhibited positive results of a characterized colour reactions of protein, carbohydrate and phenolic compound. Therefore, one of the possible active compounds from the kale juice was supposed to a glycoprotein(Mw. 270,000) which seemed unstable with heating.

To examine the possibility of using Musa sapientum L. (Banana) leaf extract as a cosmetic raw material, banana leaves grown in Jeju Island were extracted with 70% ethanol. Polysaccharides present in banana leaf extract were discarded by precipitation with cold ethanol. Polysaccharide-discarded banana leaf extract promoted procollagen and COL1A1 gene expression, but inhibited matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-2 gene expression in human skin fibroblasts when examined by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The active compound in banana leaves was identified by fractionation with various solvents. The chloroform fraction showed the highest anti-wrinkle efficacy and the active compound of chloroform fraction was identified as corosolic acid by NMR, FT-IR, EA, and HPLC-MS. In addition, banana leaf extract showed anti-oxidative efficacy with an IC50 value of 67.91 ppm, as determined by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Finally, the anti-wrinkle efficacy of banana leaf extract-containing cream was confirmed by clinical tests. Based on these results, banana leaves could have an application as a cosmetic raw material with anti-wrinkle efficacy.
Marine organism extracts were prepared from 26 species of Korean indigenous marine organisms, including 25 species belonging in class Anthozoa of phylum Cnidaria and a species belonging to subphylum Urochordata of phylum Chordata, and screened their inhibitory effects against ${\mu}$-calpain. As a result, the thirteen extracts were found to be active in the criteria of $IC_{50}$ < 100 ${\mu}g/ml$. Among them, the MeOH extracts of Plexauroides praelonga and Alveopora japonica showed remarkable ${\mu}$-calpain inhibitory activity with $IC_{50}$ values of $4.62{\pm}0.22$ and $4.82{\pm}0.07{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. In addition, chemical investigation of A. japonica led to the isolation of an active compound, hexadecyl tetradecanoate, as a selective cathepsin B inhibitor ($IC_{50}=9.05{\pm}2.45{\mu}M$). This compound was isolated as constituent of A. japonica for the first time in the present study.
