  • The production characteristics of activated carbon from waste walnut shell have been investigated by taking activation temperature, activation time, amount of activating agent, and kind of activating agent as the major influential factors. The adsorption capacity of the activated carbon which was produced using phosphoric acid as the activating agent increased with activation temperature and showed its greatest value at about $550^{\circ}C$. Yield for activated carbon was observed to decrease continuously as the activation temperature was raised. The optimal activation time for the highest adsorption capacity was found to be about 2 hr, and as the activation time increased the yield for activated carbon was showed to decrease continuously. The increase in the amount of activating agent resulted in the increase of the yield for activated carbon, however, excessive amount of activating agent deteriorated its adsorption capacity reversely. The variations of the microstructure of activated carbon observed by SEM with several influential factors, correlated very well with its changes in the adsorbability with the same factors and the kind of activating agent was found to play an important role in the determination of the adsorption capacity of activated carbon. To investigate the adsorption characteristics of the produced activated carbon, the adsorption reactions of $Cu^{2+}$ ion were examined using the produced activated carbon as the adsorbent. In general, the kinetics of the adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ ion was observed to follow a 2nd-order reaction and the rate constant for adsorption reaction increased as the initial concentration of adsorbate was diminished. The equilibrium adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ was explained well with Freundlich model and its adsorption reaction was found to be endothermic. The activation energy for adsorption was calculated to be 13.07 kcal/mol, which implied that the adsorption reaction was very irreversible, and several thermodynamic parameters of adsorption reaction were estimated using van't. Hoff equation and thermodynamic relationships.

  • At Pyropia farms, organic acid treatments have enhanced productivity and quality by removing pest algae (such as Ulva spp. and diatoms) and reducing the occurrence of diseases. Ulva spp. attaches to the Pyropia nets competing for inorganic nutrients & space and diminishing productivity. Additionally, the presence of attached contaminants (such as diatoms and middy particles) on the Pyropia nets negatively affects the quality of Pyropia. This study investigated the effects of removing Ulva linza and washing the Pyropia yezoensis nets using an activating treatment agent (organic acid and highly saline solution) with an air bubble device. The results of measuring the dead cell ratios after treatment under different conditions showed that the dead cell ratio of U. linza did not significantly increase when the air bubble device combined the activating treatment agent with the activating treatment agent alone. When washing the P. yezoensis nets, the air bubble device was about 19-37% more effective than the activating treatment agent alone. The findings of this study suggest that the air bubble device enhances the efficacy of the activating treatment agent, resulting in the effective cleaning of the Pyropia nets.

  • The fluidity of high flowing concrete can be affected by numerous parameters which characterize either the cement of the admixture. The reactivity of a cement as determined by its chemical composition(especially its $C_3$A content), its fineness and its content in sulfates and alkalies obviously plays a key role in rheology of high flowing concrete in fresh state. Specific properties of high range water reducing AE agent used to enhance the workability of high flowing concrete also exert important influence. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate and analyze the effect of cement and high range water reducing AE agent in fluidity, setting, compressive strength of high flowing concrete. As a result, we found that fluidity of high flowing concrete is affected greatly by kind of cement and high range water reducing AE agent, also, there is harmonic character between high belite cement and polycarbonic acid high range water reducing AE agent.

  • This study aims to pursue the multi-functional textile finishing method to detoxify chemical warfare agent by simply treating the well-known antimicrobial agent, chitosan, to cotton fabric. For this purpose, DFP(diisopropylfluorophosphate) was sele cted as a chemical warfare agent simulant and cotton fabric was treated with 0.5, 1.0, and 2wt% chitosan solution in 1wt% acetic acid. DFP decontamination properties of the chitosan treated cotton fabrics were evaluated and compared with the untreated cotton fabric. The chitosan treated cotton fabrics showed better DFP decontamination than the untreated cotton. Decontamination properties of the chitosan treated cotton fabrics improved with the increased chitosan solution used. Especially, the cotton fabrics treated with 2wt% chitosan solution showed 5 times more DFP decontamina tion than the untreated cotton fabrics. This suggested that the chitosan treated fabric has potential to be used as a material for protective clothing with chemical warfare agent detoxifying and antimicrobial properties.

  • The discovery that threosyl phosphonate nucleoside (PMDTA, $EC_{50}=2.53{\mu}M$) is a potent anti-HIV agent has led to the synthesis and biological evaluation of 5'-deoxy versions of threosyl phosphonate nucleosides. In the present study, (E)-3'-phosphonoalkenyl and 3'-phosphonoalkyl nucleoside analogues 13, 16, 20 and 23 were synthesized from acetol and tested for anti-HIV activity and cytotoxicity. The adenine analogue 16 was found to exhibit moderate in vitro anti-HIV-1 activity ($EC_{50}=22.2{\mu}M$).

  • Nylon 6.6 was treated with anionic synthetic tanning agent at different pH values, temperatures and liquor ratios to determine exhaustion properties. Treatments using syntan were conducted to the undyed nylon 6.6 fiber and three acid dyeings and then samples of the bath solution were subjected to HPLC analysis. Mass analysis was considered to determine the syntan components. In addition, the effect of applications using syntan and syntan/cation in improving the stain resistance was observed. The optimum treatment condition of syntan was achieved and the major component of syntan, being exhausted to the nylon substrates, was determined. In terms of stain blocking effect, a significant improvement was achieved by the syntan and syntan/cation treatments.

  • The dependence of the IR optical properties of PMMA/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite on the alumina content was investigated in the wavelength range of $3500-2800cm^{-1}$. The samples were prepared via emulsion polymerization technique using oleic acid as a coupling agent. Grafting density calculations were carried out by means of elemental analysis CHN to yield the best coupling agent content. FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of a chemical bond between aluminum oxide and oleic acid. The outcomes of XRD analyses showed the presence of cubic gamma aluminum oxide in the nanocomposite, in contrast to the amorphous nature of PMMA. TEM images showed the core-shell morphology of the particles other than pristine PMMA. Optical constants of the nanocomposite were calculated based on FTIR spectra and the Kramers-Kronig equations. The presence of nano alumina modified some of the optical indexes in IR region.

  • Attaching the organosilyl groups to macromolecular chains of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) should lead to important modifications of polymer properties. t-$BuMe_{2}Si$ and cubane-l, 4-dicarboxylic acid (CDA) were covalently linked with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The silyl-linked HEMA is abbreviated as TSMA, while cubane-l ,4-dicarboxylic acid (CDA) linked to two HEMA groups is the cross-linking agent (CA). Free radical cross-linking copolymerization of TSMA and HEMA with various ratios of CA as the cross-linking agent was carried out at 60-70$^{circ}C$. The compositions of the cross-linked, three-dimensional polymers were determined by FTIR spectroscopy. The glass transition temperature ($T_{g}$) of the network polymers was determined calorimetrically. The $T_{g}$ of the network polymer increased with increasing cross-linking degree.
