Antioxidative polyethylene films for food packaging were experimentally prepared by fortification of TBHQ(tertiary butylhydroquinone) and dl-a-tocopherol at the weight ratio of 0.05, 0.2 and 0.5%, respectively and laminated with nylon. TBHQ and tocopherol contents in the PE/nylon film were analyzed and the antioxidative effects of film were investigated on the lipid oxidation of semi-dried squid during storage at 5℃ and l5℃. TBHQ contents of TAP 1(TBHQ 0.05%), TAP 2(TBHQ 0.2%) and TAP 3(0.5%) were 38, 146 and 365 mg/100g, respectively. Tocopherol contents of DAP l(tocopherol 0.05%), DAP 2(tocopherol 0.2%) and DAP 3(tocopherol 0.5%) were 33, 139 and 356 mg/l00g, respectively. TBA value and POV during storage of semi-drid squid were affected both by storage temperatures and packaging films. Lipid oxidation during storage was retarded by anti-oxidative films, as TBA value of TAP 3 and DAP 3 revealed about 50% of control after storage at 5℃ for 20 days and similer effects in POV were also observed.
Background: Despite many epidemiological studies on the effects of dietary antioxidant micronutrients on risk of cervical cancer, the findings remain uncertain and little evidence is available for serum nutrient markers. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between serum carotenoid, retinol and tocopherol concentrations and risk of cervical cancer among Chinese women. Materials and Methods: We conducted a hospital-based case-control study in which 358 adults (158 incident cases and 200 controls) were recruited from Xinjiang, China. Serum levels of carotenoids (${\alpha}$-carotene, ${\beta}$-carotene, ${\beta}$-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and lutein/zeaxanthin), retinol, and tocopherols (${\alpha}$-tocopherol and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol) were assessed by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: We found inverse associations between serum carotenoid (${\alpha}$-carotene, ${\beta}$-carotene, and lutein/zeaxanthin) and tocopherol (${\alpha}$-tocopherol) concentrations and the risk of cervical cancer after adjusting for potential confounders, but a null association for retinol. The ORs for 1-SD increase were 0.71 (95 % CI: 0.56-0.92; p=0.003) for total carotenoids and 0.75 (95 % CI: 0.60-0.94; p=0.008) for total tocopherols. Conclusions: These results show that higher serum concentrations of some carotenoids and tocopherols are associated with a lower risk of cervical cancer among Chinese women.

Background: The accumulation of unpaired α-globin chains in patients with β-thalassemia major may clinically create ineffective erythropoiesis, hemolysis, and chronic anemia. Multiple blood transfusions and iron overload cause cellular oxidative damage. However, α-tocopherol, an antioxidant, is a potent scavenger of lipid radicals in the membranes of red blood cells (RBCs) of patients with β-thalassemia major. Purpose: To evaluate the effects of α-tocopherol on hemolysis and oxidative stress markers on the RBC membranes of patients with β-thalassemia major. Methods: Forty subjects included in this randomized controlled trial were allocated to the placebo and α-tocopherol groups. Doses of α-tocopherol were based on Institute of Medicine recommendations: 4-8 years old, 200 mg/day; 9-13 years old, 400 mg/day; 14-18 years old, 600 mg/day. Hemolysis, oxidative stress, and antioxidant variables were evaluated before and after 4-week α-tocopherol or placebo treatment, performed before blood transfusions. Results: Significant enhancements in plasma haptoglobin were noted in the α-tocopherol group (3.01 mg/dL; range, 0.60-42.42 mg/dL; P=0.021). However, there was no significant intergroup difference in osmotic fragility test results; hemopexin, malondialdehyde, reduced glutathione (GSH), or oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels; or GSH/GSSG ratio. Conclusion: Use of α-tocopherol could indirectly improve hemolysis and haptoglobin levels. However, it played no significant role in oxidative stress or as an endogen antioxidant marker in β-thalassemia major.
The present study was conducted to compare the supplementation of natural (D-${\alpha}$-tocopherol) and synthetic (DL-${\alpha}$-tocopherol acetate) vitamin E on the growth performance, meat quality, muscular antioxidant capacity and genes expression related to oxidative status of broilers. A total of 144 1 day-old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were randomly allocated into 3 groups with 6 replicates of 8 birds each. Birds were given a basal diet (control group), and basal diet supplemented with either 20 IU D-${\alpha}$-tocopherol or DL-${\alpha}$-tocopherol acetate for 42 days, respectively. The results indicated that treatments did not alter growth performance of broilers (p>0.05). Compared with the control group, concentration of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol in the breast muscle was increased by the supplementation of vitamin E (p<0.05). In the thigh, ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content was also enhanced by vitamin E inclusion, and this effect was more pronounced in the natural vitamin E group (p<0.05). Vitamin E supplementation increased the redness of breast (p<0.05). In the contrast, the inclusion of synthetic vitamin E decreased lightness of thigh (p<0.05). Dietary vitamin E inclusion reduced drip loss at 24 h of thigh muscle (p<0.05), and this effect was maintained for drip loss at 48 h in the natural vitamin E group (p<0.05). Broilers given diet supplemented with vitamin E showed decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the breast (p<0.05). Additionally, natural rather than synthetic vitamin E reduced MDA accumulation in the thigh (p<0.05). Neither natural nor synthetic vitamin E supplementation altered muscular mRNA abundance of genes related to oxidative stress (p>0.05). It was concluded that vitamin E supplementation, especially the natural vitamin E, can enhance the retention of muscular ${\alpha}$-tocopherol, improve meat quality and muscular antioxidant capacity of broilers.

This study was carried out to make water-soluble tocopherol emulsion which can be applicable directly in water. The molecular weight of tocopherol was 340 to 360 and tocopherol emulsion model was decided as O/O/W/W type. In correlation between stability of emulsion and surface tension, the stability in surface tension of emulsion was from 40 to 46 dyne/cm. In the case of lower than 40 dyne/cm of surface tension, the stability of the emulsion was lower. Lipophilic surfactants, especially for a polyglycerine polyricinoleate in 20%, 30% and 40% tocopherol emulsion, was the most effective in emulsion stability. A higher stability of the emulsion among hydrophilic surfactants in the tocopherol emulsion was obtained in the following order; polyglycerine monostearate> polyglycerine monooleate> polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monooleate$\geq$ polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate.
Effects of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and perilla oil on the toxicity of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in male rat were studied. Rats were fed ad libitum for 6 weeks with the animal diet which contains PCB 30 ppm and 100 ppm. Perilla oil (0.5 g/kg body weight) and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol (30 mg/kg body weight) were administered intraperitoneally twice a week for 6 weeks. Rats fed with PCB showed enlargement of liver and spleen, increase in aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, sereum lipid and cytochrome P 450 and decrease in body weight and glutathione. When perilla oil was administered to rats fed with PCB increase in aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, serum lipid and cytochrome P45O and decrease in body weight and glutathione were significantly augmented, compared to rats fed with PCB alone. This means that perilla oil potentiates the toxicity of PCB. On the other hand when ${\alpha}$-tocopherol was administered to rats fed with PCB increase in aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, serum lipid and cytochrome P45O and decrease in body weight and glutathione were signigicantly reduced, compared to rats fed with PCB alone. This means that u-tocopherol reduces the toxicity of PCB. From the above results, it may be concluded that PCB is metabolized by microsomal mixed function oxidase and the metabolite causes the toxicity and microsomal glutathione plays a role of protection on the toxicity of PCB.
Alpha-tocopherol transfer protein (${\alpha}$-TTP) is a liver cytosolic transport protein that faciliates ${\alpha}$-tocopherol (${\alpha}$-T) transfer into liver secreted plasma lipoproteins. Genetic defects in ${\alpha}$-TTP, like dietary vitamin E deficiency, are associated with infertility, muscular weakness and neurological disorders. Both human and ${\alpha}$-TTP deficient (${\alpha}-TTP^{-/-}$) mice exhibit severe plasma and tissue vitamin E deficiency that can be attenuated by sufficient dietary ${\alpha}$-T supplementations. In this review, we summarize the literature concerning studies utilizing the ${\alpha}-TTP^{-/-}$ mice. Levels of vitamin E in the ${\alpha}-TTP^{-/-}$ mice do not appear to be directly related to the amounts of dietary ${\alpha}$-T or to the levels of ${\alpha}$-TTP protein in tissues. The ${\alpha}-TTP^{-/-}$ mice appear to present a good model for investigating the specific role of ${\alpha}$-T in tissue vitamin E metabolism. Furthermore, ${\alpha}-TTP^{-/-}$ mice appear to be useful to elucidate functions of ${\alpha}$-TTP beyond its well recognized functions of transferring ${\alpha}$-T from liver to plasma lipoprotein fractions.
Flavor compounds of pentane, hexane, hexanal and total volatiles formed during $65^{\circ}C$ storage of ramyon fried in palm oil with ${\alpha}-tocopherol$, RHA, TRHQ, rosemary extract or defatted ricebran extract were determined by static headspace gas chromatography. The levels of the antioxidants used in the frying oil were 100 or 200 ppm, and an additional level of 300 ppm was employed in the case of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$${\alpha}-Tocopherol$ decelerated the formation of all the flavor compounds when used at 100 or 200 ppm, and the former was more effective than the latter. However, 300 ppm of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ accelerated the flavor compound formation in ramyon during storage. One hundred ppm of BHA and TBHQ contributed to the reduction in flavor compound formation in the stored ramyon, whereas 200ppm level accelerated the compound formation. Rosemary extract and defatted ricebran extract lowered the flavor compound formation in ramyon when used at 100 or 200 ppm in palm oil. Their lowering effects were similar to that of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$, and superior to that of TBHQ. suggesting a possible utilization of defatted ricebran extract as a new natural antioxidant.
Influences of u-tocopherol on the toxicity of vitamin A acetate in male rats were studied. The obtained results are as follows; 1) The administration of vitamin A acetate 500,000 IU/Kg i.p. twice at 3 days interval decreased the liver weight/body weight and increased the spleen weight/body weight, and increased activities of SGOT and alkaline phosphatase, and also increased BUN and creatinine. 2) ${\alpha}$-Tocopherol administered together with vitamin A acetate as given as the above 1) poteniated the increase of SGOT activity caused by vitamin A acetate and reduced the increase of alkaline phosphatase activity and creatinine which were caused by vitamin A acetate. 3) The administration of vitamin A acetate 500,000 IU/Kg i.p. twice a week for 4 weeks showed remarkable decrease of body weight gain and the effect of it was larger in later stage than in early. It increased significantly liver weight/body weight and further increased the activities of SGOT, SGPT and alkaline phosphatase, and showed no influnence on BUN and creatinine. 4) ${\alpha}$-Tocopherol administered together with vitamin A acetate as given as the above 3) reduced the decrease of body weight gain caused by vitamin A acetate, and potentiated remarkably the increased activities of SGOT and alkaline phosphatase which were caused by vitamin A acetate.
Six sesame oils prepared from Korean and Chinese sesame were oxidized at 40$^{\circ}C$ for 16 weeks in a dark place. Effects of oxidative stability on tocopherols of those sesame oils were studied in related to chemical changes in the oils. All oil samples showed that the rate of tocopherol reduction was increased by the storage time. The changes of peroxide value, free fatty acid, carbonyl content were not caused in direct relation to the tocopherols oxidation. The amount of total tocopherol in the Korean sesame oil ranged from 48.7-50.3mg/100g and Chinese seseame oil ranged from 42.4-44.7 mg/100g According to the three individual tocopherols remaining content after 16weeks, ${\gamma}$-,${\alpha}$-,${\beta}$- tocopherol showed 70%, 30%, 20% of initial concentrations in the oils respectively. There was no significant difference between Korean and Chinese sesame oil except the higher total amount of the tocopherol in Korean sesame oil than that of Chinese.
