  • The aim of this study is to examine a feasibility to substitute Ti for Ta in reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steel by comparing a Ti-added RAFM steel with a conventional Ta-added RAFM steel. The microstructures and mechanical properties of Ta-, and Ti-added RAFM steels were investigated and a relationship between microstructures and mechanical properties was considered based on quantitative analysis of precipitates in two RAFM steels. Ta-, and Ti-added RAFM steels were normalized at $1000{\sim}1040^{\circ}C$ for 30 min and tempered at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr. Both RAFM steels had very similar microstructures, that is, typical tempered martensite with relatively coarse $M_{23}C_6$ carbides at boundaries of grain and lath, and fine MX precipitates inside laths. The MX precipitates were identified as TaC in Ta-added RAFM steel and TiC or (Ti, W)C in Ti-added RAFM steel, respectively. It is believed that these RAFM steels show similar tensile and Charpy impact properties due to similar microstructures. Precipitate hardening and brittle fracture strength calculated with quantitative analysis of precipitates elucidated well the similar behaviors on the tensile and Charpy impact properties of Ta-, and Ti-added RAFM steels.

  • This study attempts to form a TiN barrier layer against Cu diffusion by the easier and more convenient method. In this new approach, Ti was sputter-deposited, and nitrided by heat-treating in the NH$_3$ambient. Sheet resistance of as-deposited Ti was 20 Ω/$\square$, but increased to 195 Ω/$\square$ after the heat-treatment at 30$0^{\circ}C$, and lowered to 120 Ω/$\square$ after the heat-treatment at 50$0^{\circ}C$, and $600^{\circ}C$. AES results for these thin films confirmed that the atomic ratio of Ti and N was close to 1:1 at or above 40$0^{\circ}C$ heat-treatment. However, it was also found that excessive oxygen was contained in the TiN layer. To examine the barrier property against Cu diffusion, 100nm Cu was deposited on the TiN layer and then annealed at 40$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 min.. Cu remained at the surface without diffusing into the Si layer.

  • Surface alloying using TiC, $TiB_2$ and VC ceramic particles on carbon steel has been performed using high voltage electron beam. Each type of ceramic particles was mixed with flux of Al and $MgF_2$ in 1 to 4 ratio. The microstructures of the surface alloyed layers consisted of melted region, interface region. heat affected region and the unaffected matrix. The surface layer of the TiC surface alloyed had a cubed primary and a eutectic type of TiC. $TiB_2$ in surface layer of $TiB_2$ surface alloyed were incompletely melted with$ TiB_2$ particles as observed before the alloying. On the surface layer of the VC surface alloyed, very well defined cell structure was observed with VC on the cell boundary. In addition, ~50 nm in diameter VC particles in high density were ubiquitous in the matrix. Those fine VC particles prominently improved the hardness and wear resistance of the surface layer of the VC surface alloyed.

  • Si3N4 -Si3N4 joints were made using Ag-Cu-Ti and Ag-Cu-In-Ti via brazing method and the change in joint strength was investigated after heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ or $650^{\circ}C$ for up to 2000h. The initial strength of as-brazed joints with Ag-Cu-In-Ti was lower but the reduction of the strength was less dramatic than that with Ag-Cu-Ti. The joints made of a new brazing alloy Au-Ni-Cr-Mo-Fe which is developed for high temperature applications were heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1000h. As the heat treatment time increased the bond strength increased. The results of the joining system with Mo or Cu interlayer showed that the strength of the joint with Mo interlayer was higher but the system incurred problems in joint production Also it was found from oxidation experiment that Ti and In affected the oxidation resistance of brazing alloy.

To abtaln, the stable phase, perovskltc structure, furnace annealmg techmque had been cmplo:~d In PbO amb~ent for the $550^{\circ}C$-$750^{\circ}C$ temperature ranges. On Pt(250$\AA$)/Ti(500$\AA$)/Si, Pt(1000)$\AA$/Ti(500$\AA$)/Si substrates, effects of Ti layer and Pt thickness are studled. Though thickness of the Pt layer 1s 1000$\AA$). oxygen diffusion is not prevented and accelerated by Ti layer actlng for oxygen sink sites durmg furnace annealing. The upper TI layer 1s transformed Into TIOX by oxyen dlffuslon and lower Ti layer Into silicide with in-diffused Pt. The formation of TiOx layer seems to affect the orlentatton of the PZT layer. • The TiC-Ni/Al reaction-bonding composites were prepared by the infiltration of Ni/Al melt into the TiC preforms. The microstructure the reaction composition crystalline phase and the mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. During the reaction-bonding Ni/Al mixture had a good wettability and per-meability with TiC preform and pore-free and fully dense sintered bodies were produced. In the case of the Ni/Al atomic ratio of 0.3 and 0.5 TiC raw particle shape was changed to irregular particles because of the decomposition in the liquid matrix and its phenomena was more distinguished in the Al-rich liquid matrix. With increasing more than 1 of the Ni/Al atomic ratio the sample of TiC grain shape was changed from spherical to palatelet particles. Also with increasing the atomic ratio of Ni/Al bending strength and fracture spherical to palatelet particles. Also with increasing the atomic ratio of Ni/Al bending strength and fracture toughness were increased and its maximum value was 1073 MPa and 11 MPa.m1/2 respectively.

  • In this study, FeAl based intermetallic matrix composites reinforced with in-situ synthesized TiC particles were fabricated by an in-situ liquid mixing process. The microstructures, mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of the in-situ liquid mixing processed composite were investigated and compared with the vacuum suction casting processed composite. The results showed that the in-situ formed TiC particles exhibited fine and uniform dispersion in the liquid mixing processed composite, while significant grain boundary clustering and coarsening of TiC particles were obtained by the vacuum suction process. It was also shown in both types of composites that the hardness and bending strength were increased with the increase of the TiC volume fractions. Through the study of fractography in the bending test, it was considered that the TiC particles prohibited brittle intergranular fracture of FeAl intermetallic matrix by crack deflections. Because of the uniformly distributed fine TiC particles, the bending strength of the liquid mixing processed composite was superior to that of the casting processed composite.

  • Growth behavior of two different types of grains, faceted and rounded, in a liquid matrix has been studied in the (75WC-25TiCN)-30Co system. Powder samples were sintered above the eutectic temperature for various times under a carbon saturated condition. (Ti,W)(C,N) grains with a rounded shape and WC grains with a faceted shape coexisted in the same Co based liquid. With increasing sintering time, the average size of (Ti.W)(C,N) grains increased continuously and very large WC grains appeared. The growth of rounded (Ti,W)(C,N) grains followed a cubic law, r^3-r^3_0$=kt, where r is the average size of the grains, $r_0$ the initial average size, k the proportionality constant and t the sintering time. indicating a diffusion-controlled growth. On the other hand, the growth of the faceted WC grains resulted in a bimodal grain size distribution, showing an abnormal grain growth. These observations show that the growth behavior of different types of grains is governed by their shape, faceted or rounded, even in the same liquid matrix.

  • $SiO_2$ and polycrystalline Si layers were sequentially grown on (100) Si. NiSi was formed on this substrate from a 20nm Ni layer or a 20nm Ni/5nm Ti bilayer by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at $300~500^{\circ}C$ to compare thermal stability. In addition, MOS capacitors were fabricated by depositing a 20nm Ni layer on the Poly-Si/$SiO_2$substrate, RTA at $400^{\circ}C$ to form NiSi, $BF_2$ or As implantation and finally drive- in annealing at $500~800^{\circ}C$ to evaluate electrical characteristics. When annealed at $400^{\circ}C$, NiSi made from both a Ni monolayer and a Ni/Ti bilayer showed excellent thermal stability. But NiSi made from a Ni/Ti bilayer was thermally unstable at $500^{\circ}C$. This was attributed to the formation of insignificantly small amount of NiSi due to suppressed Ni diffusion through the Ti layer. PMOS and NMOS capacitors made by using a Ni monolayer and the SADS(silicide as a dopant source) method showed good C-V characteristics, when drive-in annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ for 20sec., and$ 600^{\circ}C$ for 80sec. respectively.

  • Powder Metallurgy method have been used to fabricate TiC base composite with ferrous binder. TiC base composite has versatile hardness and is usable as sintered, or after heat treatment as required by the given applications. Smooth, round TiC grains impart high wear resistance and lubricity as well known characteristics of this composite. Annealed composite can be formed by conventional machining and be hardened up to 70 H$\_$R/C in vacuum. The optimizing fabrication process enables this composite to improve mechanical properties in heat, wear and corrosion environments. This study has examine the relationship between fabrication condition and mechanical property in TiC-Cr-Mo-Fe Composite.
