  • Musical is produced by multiple specialists including director, writer, composer, lyricist, choreographer, music director, actors/actresses and so on. For the success of one musical, all the people with different background should demonstrate their creativities. The basic frame of a work is made by writer, composer and lyricist first unless it is a licensed musical. They are called as Creative Team, and also director, choreographer, actors/actresses and staff are called as Production Team. Both teams are collectively called as Creative Staff. Then, the secondary creative staff members may participate in the work depending on the production size, and each team can consist of the members such as music director, stage designer, sound designer and so on. The staff related to music in Creative Team of the musical is developed with the initiation from the music supervisor who decides the musical color and genre of the work, the fragmentation and the specialization. However, composer or music director takes these roles in charge in Korea. This study aims to establish the roles and concept of vocal coach according to the fragmentation of working process and to investigate their roles and needs in the domestic musical industry upon case analysis of musical production processes in overseas. The common things and differences in the roles and the functions between ordinary voice teachers and musical vocal coaches were analyzed and the cases of vocal coach in the Korean musicals were reviewed by the interviews. In addition, creative team system was reviewed in the Korean musicals.

  • The study of arrangement in musical theatre has been relatively marginalized compared to the playwriting and composition. However, as complete musical music can never exist without the process of arranging, the arranger is a major creator who plays the most important role as a playwright or composer, and finally makes a decisive contribution to enhancing the completeness of the musical. Based on the tracks of (2006), (2007) and (2008), among the prestigious Tony Awards winners for Best Orchestrations, the feature is divided into instrumentation, instrumental combinations and dispositions, and insertions of counterpoint. So, we can discover the new imagination and creativity of the arranger, and the arranger's clever orchestration techniques that meet the composer's intentions.

  • The marriage between music and film, both temporal art forms, demands that the inherent aspects of note in each medium are brought into correspondence within a dramatic context. In film-making, the most crucial and difficult problem a film composer faces is finding the music that seems absolutely right for the film and its characters, sequences and dramatic lines. When writing a film score, composers become musical dramatists; some have a special instinct that enables them to find the right kind of melodic line, orchestral texture, rhythmic device and musical style to bring out what they intuitively recognize as the essential aspect of the drama. In this study, several examples are cited - Alex North, Hugo Friedhofer, Bernard Herrmann and David Raksin - that underline this kinetic function of music in film. Effort is made to uncover as many possibilities as possible, so as to arrive at a better understanding of how the two media interrelate for the purpose of emphasizing the dramatic lines.

  • Germaine Tailleferre is the only woman composer among the French group of six composers known as "Les Six." In her 70-year career, she has left behind numerous chamber music pieces for the piano. Although her chamber music works constitute a significant portion of her overall compositions, research focusing on her piano chamber music pieces is lacking. Therefore, this study introduces a comprehensive list of Tailleferre's chamber music pieces and categorizes each piece according to its performing level of difficulty. Additionally, through a detailed analysis of her <Sonata for Two Pianos>, composed in 1974, this study aims to understand her musical style and artistic world, particularly regarding form, harmony, and melody. <Sonata for Two Pianos>, rooted in the unpretentious and light musical language characteristic of the salon style popular in Parisian cafes and music halls at the time, can be seen as a multi-layered work reflecting various musical languages such as Impressionism, and Neo-classicism. This study may contribute to a better understanding of Tailleferre's musical world and aid in discovering and expanding new literature on 20th-century piano chamber music.

  • This paper describes design and implementation of the system that is used to efficiently retrieve music information at a digital music library. Unlike typical music information retrieval systems, this system allows the user to sing a part of the melody through the microphone which he/she wants to find rather than using title, composer or the subject catalog to search. The system then recognizes the musical notes information through the signal processing of the sounds of the entered melody, and the intervals contour is created based on this information and used as a search pattern. By running the proposed notes string search algorithm that uses the musical notes information processed with the user input, and it produces the approximate search results. Therefore, users are able to retrieve and appreciate the music whenever he/she can sing any portion of the desired music.

  • Tongyeong International Music Festival was established to commemorate the world-renowned composer Isang Yun. Despite its short history, the event is quickly grown into a global music festival. This paper considers the future direction of Tongyeong International Music Festival as seen through the musical world of Isang Yun. Although Isang Yun suffered through Korea's modern history and was deported from his own country, his works clearly use Korea, in particular the cultural heritage of Tongyeong, as his creative energy. His music is reflected in the festival in various forms, i.e., East and West, past and present, North and South and maestro and rookie, while pursuing a world of harmony. In order for Tongyeong International Music Festival to join the ranks of global festivals, an effort needs to be made to find the values from the tangible and intangible cultural resources of Tongyeong, the source of Isang Yun's musical creations, and connect these values to the music festival. I believe that, based on such cultural capacity, when Tongyeong International Music Festival becomes a unique festival that differentiates itself from music festivals in the west, it will advance into the successful music festival of a global music city.

  • Traditional indexing mechanism are based on the song's metadata such as the title and the composer and so on. However, these system have a major limitation that users have to know the metadata of the songs they want to retrieve. In order to solve these limitation, we proposed a rhythm extraction system that allows users to retrieve music information efficiently from a large music database using the rhythm that is defined as the parts of the music.

  • There is a unique method of musical expression in the nature documentary. The expression method is Mickey Mousing technique, which expresses the movement of animals with music. The Mickey mousing technique can also be used in other types of documentaries, but it is most prominently used in nature documentaries. The Mickey Mousing technique cannot be used in any field other than music composition, because the composer should describe the movement of animals by playing music to match the animal's movements exactly. It is also because they have to play the instrument separately according to the sound source. In this study, we examined the nature documentaries broadcast by KBS over the last five years and analyzed the cases of Mickey Mousing technique. Therefore, we obtained research results that the Mickey Mousing technique is necessary and that the music composition is also necessary as a background music of nature documentaries.

The music derived from traditional African music with its unique syncopated rhythm using a five-note pentatonic scale, and has developed through significant influences from gospel music. African-American music has also evolved through historical social movements, such as eliminating the racial discrimination, and has been influenced by the personalities of different cities in the United States. Modern music features fusion with elements of Western music. One of the most influential and respected artists of the 20th century was Stevie Wonder, who was known as "Father of African-American music." He was an accomplished artist, winning numerous awards despite being disabled. He has become one of the most famous and respected artists worldwide. This study of Stevie Wonder's life, music, and spiritual strength, aims to highlight his significant achievements and contributions to pop music. This is a study based on an analysis of the work of Stevie Wonder and describes how elements of African-American music influences current Korean pop music and musicians.

  • The advances of computer hardware and information processing technologies raise the needs of multimedia information retrieval systems. Up to date. multimedia information systems have been developed for text information and image information. Nowadays. the multimedia information systems for video and audio information. especially for musical information have been grown up more and more. In recent music information retrieval systems. not only the information retrieval based on meta-information such like composer and title but also the content-based information retrieval is supported. The content-based information retrieval in music information retrieval systems utilize the similarity value between the user query and the music information stored in music database. In tbis paper. hence. we developed a similarity computation algorithm in which the pitches and lengths of each corresponding pair of notes are used as the fundamental factors for similarity computation between musical information. We also make an experiment of the proposed algorithm to validate its appropriateness. From the experimental results. the proposed similarity computation algorithm is shown to be able to correctly check whether two music files are analogous to each other or not based on melodies.
