  • Immediate implant placement (IIP) in fresh extraction sockets exhibits similar survival and success rates to delayed implant placement in healed sockets. Several advantages of IIP involve shortened total treatment time, reduction of the number of invasive surgeries, and subsequent reduction of patient discomfort due to lack of additional surgeries. The major shortcomings in IIP, however, include the inability to obtain early bony support, presence of a gap between the extraction socket and fixture, and the inability to cover the fixture with soft tissue, leading to increased risk of infection and implant loss. When IIP is performed, atraumatic or minimally traumatic extractions, conservation of the septal bone in molars, minimal flap elevation or flapless surgery, bone grafting the gap between the fixture and the extraction socket, and coverage with soft tissue or a membrane must be considered.

  • Cleaning of foreign matter and corrosion products on surface among conservation treatment of iron artifacts is an important part for looking up a original form. The sand blaster is the most popular equipment when it removes the foreign matter and corrosion products on iron artifacts surface. Current foreign matter and corrosion products equipment, which mostly uses, is sand blaster. Glass dust which sprayed from sand blaster is harmful and causing environmental pollution. In order to solve these problems, we investigated the $CO_2$ snow cleaning that use a eco-friendly equipment to apply for cleaning foreign matter and corrosion products on surface of iron artifacts. It examined by using sand blaster and $CO_2$ snow cleaning to aged steel coupon and iron artifacts. In case of aged steel coupon, the result showed that the sand blaster and $CO_2$ snow cleaning methods were similar to the degrees of cleaning foreign matter and corrosion products, through surface roughness, color measurement and SEM. $CO_2$ snow cleaning applied to aged steel coupons weren't worn out the surface in comparison with sand blaster by SEM. When applied to the iron artifacts, power nozzle of the $CO_2$ snow cleaning was an excellent cleaning effect that surface wern't worn out in comparison with sand blaster. And, it showed that internal structure change of metal was no found before and after cleaning by X-ray radiography. Consequently, we confirmed that cleaning of the sand blaster and power nozzle of $CO_2$ snow cleaning were similar to the effect. But, it's very careful to use this method because of high outlet pressure of power nozzle for applying to the iron artifacts. As a result of experiments, it could be found that the cleaning methods should be selected depending on internal state of the artifacts.

  • The stone Buddhas and Shrine of Unjusa temple (Korea Treasure No. 797) in Hwasun formed in Koryo Dynasty are unique style which the Buddha faces each other the back parts of south and north within the stone Shrine. The stone Buddhas and Shrine are highly evaluated in historical, artistic and academic respects. But, the stone properties have been exposed in the open system various aspects of degradations weathered for a long time without specific protective facilities. The rock materials of the stone Buddhas and Shrine are about 47 blocks, and total press load is about 56.6 metric ton. The host rocks composed mainly of white grey hyaline lithic tuff and rhyolitic tuff breccia. In addition, biotite granite used as part during the restoration works. The chemical index of alteration for host tuffaceous rocks and the replacement granites range from 52.1 to 59.4 and 50.0 to 51.0, respectively. Weathering types for the stone Buddhas and Shrine were largely divided with physical, chemical and biological weathering to make a synthetic deterioration map according to aspects of damage, and estimate share as compared with surface area. Whole deterioration degrees are represented that physical weathering appeared exfoliation. Chemical weathering is black coloration and biological weathering of grey lichen, which show each lighly deterioration degrees. According to deterioration degree by direction of stone Buddhas and Shrine, physical weathering mostly appeared by 39.1% on the sorthern part, and chemical weathering is 61.2% high share on the western part. Biological weathering showed 38.3% the largest distribution on the southern part. Therefore, it is necessary to try hardening for the parts with serious cracks or exfoliations, remove secondary contaminants and organisms through regular cleaning. Also necessary to make a plan to remove moisture of the ground which causes weathering, and estimate that need established and scientific processing through clinical demonstration of conservation plan that chooses suitable treatment.

  • Ancient metal objects with inlaid designs were mainly decorated using the wire inlay technique in which "V"- or "U"-shaped grooves were cut in a metal object and then filled with gold or silver. Previous studies on ancient metal objects featuring wire inlay generally attempted to ascertain the inlay techniques applied by examining photomicroscopes acquired during conservation treatment. However, they had limitations when examining wire inlay technique to the minute details. Wire inlay technique can be better investigated by enlarging X-ray films of relics using stereoscopic microscopy under transmitted light. The core processes of the wire inlay technique involve cutting grooves using a chisel and creating the inlay wires, but researchers hold varying opinions about the two processes. This study analyzed the entirety of the materials able to shed light on the main processes applied in Baekje wire inlay by examining X-ray films of relics through stereoscopic microscopy. This exhaustive research revealed that two types of techniques were used for wire inlay during the Baekje period. One is a plastic process of engraving dotted lines using a chisel and is found mostly in objects from the Cheonan and Gongju areas. The other is a cutting process that incises fine lines and was used mostly in relics from the Osan, Seosan, and Wanju areas. It is likely that the Baekje wire inlay techniques feature regional differences because the respective techniques were used or introduced by different groups of people.

  • To develop proper soil management practices for reducing soil erosion, experiments were carried out by using lysimeters in Pyeongchang highland, Korea. Lysimeters installed at Hoenggye bad 13% slope, 15 m slope length and 3 m width. Lysimeters with 23% slope, 15 m slope length and 3 m width were also installed at Yongsan. Soil textures in Hoenggye and Yongsan lysimeter plots were silty clay loam and sandy loam, respectively. In the lysimeters potato was cultivated, and slant furrow culture and contour culture were applied. Up-down furrow and continuous fallow lysimeter was included in the experiments as a control plot. For the slant furrow and contour culture methods, minimum furrow mulching and gravel barrier were placed at each end of the furrows in the lysimeters from April to October in 2000 and 2001 to prevent soil and nutrient losses. In Heonggye, in two years experiments, average soil loss of 17 Mg/ha was found in the up-down and continuous fallow lysimeter and 2.6 Mg/ha from furrow minimum straw and slant furrow treatment, and 1.8 Mg/ha from slant furrow and gravel bag treatment. In the contour culture, the soil losses were further reduced. In Yongsan, soil loss in the slant furrow culture without any protection treatment was 167 Mg/ha, and the soil loss was reduce to 61 and 86 Mg/ha with minimum straw and gravel bag treatments, respectively. The soil loss could be reduced more than 45% by furrow minimum straw and gravel barrier. The furrow minimum straw or gravel bag barrier successfully reduced soil loss in clay loam soil in Heonggye, but still the treatments were not enough to reduce soil loss in saprolite piled sandy loam soil in Yongsan.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effective cryopreservation condition of Potentilla discolor Bunge, a rare native plant. Seed viability was more than 80% in PVS2 and PVS3 solution treatments. Seed viability was higher in PVS3 than PVS2 treatment. Seed viability was lower than control in spite of sucrose pretreatment. The germination rate was 95% at 60 min of PVS2 treatment and 30 min of PVS3 treatment but the germination rate was low at other treatments. The growth of the seedling wasn't doing that of the control except for treat PVS2 and PVS3 solution for 30 min. There was no statistically significant difference between the encapsulation method and the vitrification method in the seedling growth between the two cryogenic storage methods. This study is expected to be applied to future conservation methods of Potentilla discolor.

  • We use two different methods for laboratory propagation from seed of lady's slipper orchid(Cypripedium macranthos Sw.); immature seed which also called green capsule or fully mature seed about 120~130 days from pollination. In green capsule culture, the seed pods should be collected within precisely right time. The right time of seed collection could be diverse under the wether conditions or nutritional factors of the plants. In fully matured seed culture, the more complicated procedures are needed to break the dormancy of the seed; thermal or chemical treatment. The seedlings in this study were easily germinated from immature seeds in Harvais medium; 53 days after pollination(DAP) in Cypripedium pubescens, DAP 65 in C. parviflorum and C. macranthos. The germinated seedlings were transplanted to hormone free media immediately to avoid abnormal growth of seedlings. When the seedlings have roots with a minimum length of around 2-3cm and have visible dormant buds, the seedlings were removed from the flask and stored in refrigerator for vernalization. To examine the correlation of seedlings and maternal plants, the 125 seedlings of C. macranthos were transplanted in the soil bed at a distance of 20-100 cm from mother plants on April 20. The survival rate of seedlings were 92% in 20 cm distance from the ripe plants, and 56 % in 100 cm distance. The seedlings which were transplanted near mother plants showed vigorous growth in plant height, leaf width, and especially dormant buds. Considering the existence of mycorrhiza which is a symbiotic association between a fungus and the roots of a orchid vascular, the various fungus from mother plants could affect the growth of the seedlings. These results indicate the possibility of high and stable production and practical industrialization of endangered lady's slipper orchids.

  • This paper presents a new and simple technique to perform MUSCL reconstruction for solving 2D shallow water equations. The modified MUSCL scheme uses weighted area ratio to apply non-uniform grid in stead of the previous method that equally distributed the difference of conservation variables to each interface. The suggested method can physically reconstruct conservation variables in case of uniform grid as well as non-uniform grid. In this study, Unsplit scheme applicable to unstructured grid is used and efficient slope limiter of TVD scheme is used to control numerical oscillation which can be occurred in modified MUSCL scheme. For accurate and efficient treatment of bed slope term, the modified MUSCL scheme is coupled with the surface gradient method. The finite volume model applied to suggested scheme is verified through a comparison between numerical solution and laboratory measurements data such as the simulations of isolated building test case and Bellos's dam break test case.

  • Bckground: Adjuvant radiation therapy is commonly administered following breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer patients. Hypofractionated radiotherapy can significantly reduce the waiting time for radiotherapy, working load on machines, patient visits to radiotherapy departments and medical costs. Material/Methods: Fifty-two patients with operable breast cancer (pT1-3pN0M0) who underwent breast conservation surgery in Tehran Cancer Institute during January 2011 to January 2012, were randomly assigned to undergo radiotherapy in two arms (hypofractionated radiotherapy arm with 30 patients, dose 42.5 Gy in 16 fractions; and conventional radiotherapy arm with 22 patients, dose 50 Gy in 25 fractions). W compared these two groups in terms of overall survival, locoregional control, late skin complications and cosmetic results. Results: At a median follow-up of 52.4 months (range: 0-64 months), the follow-up rate was 82.6%. Overall, after 60 months, there was no detectable significant differences between groups regarding cosmetic results (p = 0.857), locoregional control or survival. Conclusions: The results confirm that hypofractionated radiotherapy with a subsequent boost is as effective as conventional radiotherapy, is well-tolerated and can be used as an alternative treatment method following breast conservation surgery.

  • This study was conducted to investigate effects of cryopreservation by vitrification on the seed germination rate and growth and physiological properties of seedlings of Maackia amurensis. Cryopreservation significantly decreased the germination rate of seeds of M. amurensis, but the reduction of germination rate was mitigated by the treatment of cryoprotectant (plant vitrification solution, PVS2) before plugging into liquid nitrogen and fast thawing rate after cryopreservation. Long-term PVS2 exposure decreased seed germination rate, whereas cryopreservation time didn't have influence on seed germination rate. In addition, growth and physiological properties of seedlings were not affected by PVS2 exposing time and cryopreservation time. Therefore cryopreservation could be widely used as a technique of long-term ex situ conservation without any damage and deterioration of cells or tissues of the forest seeds. However, in order to increase the effect of cryopreservation, we have to develope the lower toxic cryoprotectant and suitable techniques to the structural or chemical properties of a variety of seeds.
