The purpose of this study is to develop a zirconium-based alloy with low modulus and magnetic susceptibility to prevent the stress-shielding effect and the generation of artifacts. Zr-7Cu-xSn (x = 1, 5, 10, 15 mass%) alloys are prepared by an arc melting process. Microstructure characterization is performed by microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Mechanical properties are evaluated using micro Vickers hardness and compression test. The magnetic susceptibility is evaluated using a SQUID-VSM. The average magnetic susceptibility value of the Zr-7Cu-xSn alloy is 1.176 × 10-8 cm3g-1. Corrosion tests of zirconium-based alloys are conducted through polarization test. The average Icorr value of the Zr-7Cu-xSn alloy is 0.1912 ㎂/cm2. The elastic modulus value of 14 ~ 18 GPa of the zirconium-based alloy is very similar to the elastic modulus value of 15 ~ 30 GPa of the human bone. Consequently, the Sn added zirconium alloy, Zr-7Cu-xSn, is very interesting and attractive as a biomaterial that reduces the stress-shielding effect caused by differences of elastic modulus between human bone and metallic implants. In addition, this material has the potential to be used in metallic dental implants to effectively eliminate artifacts in MRI images due to low magnetic susceptibility.
The review summarizes the published data on the widely applied electron-beam, laser-beam, as well as resistance upset, projection, and spot welding of zirconium alloys for nuclear applications. It provides the results of their analysis to identify common patterns in this area. Great attention has been paid to the quality requirements, the edge preparation, up-to-date equipment, process parameters, as well as post-weld treatment and processing. Also, quality control and weld repair methods have been mentioned. Finally, conclusions have been drawn about a significant gap between the capabilities of advanced welding equipment to control the microstructure and, accordingly, the properties of welded joints of the zirconium alloys and existing algorithms that enable to realize them in the nuclear industry. Considering the ever-increasing demands on the high-burnup accident tolerant nuclear fuel assemblies, great efforts should be focused on the improving the welding procedures by implementing predefined heat input cycles. However, a lot of research is required, since the number of possible combinations of the zirconium alloys, designs and dimensions of the joints dramatically exceeds the quantity of published results on the effect of the welding parameters on the properties of the welds.
Zirconium(IV) chloride is found to be an efficient catalyst for the electrophilic addition reaction of indole with aldehydes/ketones to afford the corresponding bis(indolyl methanes in good yields. The remarkable features of this new procedure are high conversions, shorter reaction times, cleaner reaction profiles and simple experimental and work-up procedures.

An efficient method of addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehydes by employing a zirconium complex as the catalyst has been described. A variety of aromatic, aliphatic, cyclic and heterocyclic aldehydes has been converted into corresponding trimethylsilyl ethers in excellent yield within short reaction time.
A study on the effects of oxide growth on the mechanical properties degradation of pure zirconium and Zircaloy-4 is carried out with high temperature tensile tests. It is found that the mechanical properties can deteriorate with the oxide growth less than $1\%$ of total specimen cross section, especially at $300\~400^{\circ}C$ that is zirconium alloy cladding temperature during the nuclear reactor operation. It is also revealed that Young's modulus changes little but yield strength and tensile strength drop down to $20\% and 40\%$ of the room temperature strength, respectively, in the temperature range. Fractographic analysis shows that the number of dimples decreases and fractured surface becomes smooth with increasing oxide thickness.
In order to make a highly ordered three-dimensionally macro-porous structure of zirconia ceramics, porogen precursors PMMA beads were prepared by emulsion polymerization using acrylic monomer. The monodisperse PMMA latex beads were closely packed by centrifugation as a porogen template for the infiltration of zirconium acetate solution. The mixed compound of PMMA and zirconium acetate was dried. According to the firing schedule, dry compacts of PMMA and zirconium acetate were calcined at $475^{\circ}C$ to obtain micro-, macro-, and meso- structures of polycrystalline zirconia with monodispersed porosity. Inorganic frameworks composed of $ZrO_2$ were formed and showed a three Dimensionally Ordered Microstructure [3DOM] of $ZrO_2$ ceramics. The obtained $ZrO_2$ skeleton was calcined at $710^{\circ}C$. The 3DOM $ZrO_2$ skeleton showed color tuning in solutions such as deionized [DI] $H_2O$ and/or methanol. The monodispersed crystalline micro-structure with micro/meso porosity was observed by FE-SEM.
The dish cloth requires antimicrobial activity for hygienic purpose. Until now, organic antimicrobial agents of low cost have been frequently used for the anitimicrobial finishing. However, a cleaner hving anitimicroial activity should be more durable considering consumers' ever-increasing expectation. In this study, the cleaner containing the bamboo fiber were finished with a formulation of a new zirconium-containing inorganic agent of zirconium phosphate and polyurethane binders. The optimum treatment condition was investigated. And its durability against repeated laundering cycles was assessed. The existence of Zr after the repeated laundering was verified and the antimicrobial effect did not decrease under 30 washing cycles.
Material Characteristics of zirconium oxide thin films obtained by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition on p-type Si(100) substrates were investigated to explain their unable electrical properties. The films obtained without heating had polycrystalline nanograins that are mostly of a tetragonal phase under oxygen-deficient plasma conditions but transformed into a monoclinic phase with increasing $O_2$ addition in the plasma. Mostly amorphous bulk $ZrO_2$ with a relatively thicker and smoother interfacial layer was obtained from oxygen-rich plasmas, resulting in a decrease in both the overall dielectric constant and the leakage current density. the interfacial layer formed between the bulk $ZrO_2$ and Si substrate was analyzed to be zirconium silicate, which approached $SiO_2$ as its zirconium content decreased with the increasing gas phase $O_2$ content.
The $\alpha$-zirconium phosphate particles as fine as 20 nm were fabricated through solution technique using $ZrOCl_2{\cdot}8H_2O$ and $H_3PO_4$ as precursors. Stability of $\alpha$-Zirconium phosphate could be ensured by adding excess phosphoric acid to a stoichiometric composition Instead of using reflux route that resulted in coarsening of particles due to an inevitably long aging. The excess phosphorous incorporated in the crystal could be successfully eliminated afterwards through careful washing. Moreover, heavily agglomerated particles are observed before washing, but fairly dispersed state is found out after washing treatment. Thus, it is found that dispersed state as well as phase stability is ensured through proper washing treatment.
