Deploying a Wireless Sensor Network for Oceanography using ZigBee

  • We recently developed new offshore observation system using USN buoy, widely used to measure the directional properties of ocean wave, seawater temperature, UV light, longitude and latitude of the buoy using GPS module. This paper also documents the development and implementation of a buoy network for acquisition of data of base station with buoys. The major phases of the project include specification of the network, physical construction of network nodes, software development for control of nodes, and testing of network performance. We described some of the practical issues involved in designing, building and deploying a buoy network for oceanographic monitoring. The paper explains some of the design decisions and their consequences, and some of the lessons learned from a first lesson network trial at sea.

  • The monitoring and diagnosing technique for lightning arresters is important to assure the reliability of power supply in GIS-substation. In this paper, we described the implementation of an expert system for GIS arrester facilities. The proposed system consists of a data acquisition module (DAM), a wireless communication module, and a personal computer. The DAM detects system voltages, total leakage currents and its harmonic components, and includes an algorithm to calculate the resistive leakage current by the principle that the magnitudes of resistive leakage current are equal at the same level of the system voltage applied to the arrestor. Also, we designed a surge event detection circuit which can acquire the date, the polarity, and the amplitude of surge events. All the acquired data are transmitted after correction by many algorithms to the remote station through the ZigBee protocol. The expert system is based on the Jave Expert System Shell (JESS) and make more reliable decision by using an exclusive inference process.

  • In this paper, we study on a radio multiple sensing interface module to accurately decide serious error sources that are happened by unexpectable problems in industrial fields, in addition, we study a reliability improvement scheme to guarantee the integrity of multiple sensing data. For multiple sensing interface module, communication drivers such as USART, TWI, ADC and GPIO-I2C are implemented. to improve the transmission reliability, reed-Solomon code is used. From the simulation result of this system in indoor environment, we confirm that the reliability of RS coded data is improved about 5 times than uncoded data. Moreover, we prove that multiple sensing interface module is suitable to diagnose error sources of industrial automaton equipment.

  • With the issue of a Green IT Technology, studies on a environment-friendly luminous source that can reduce Carbon discharge and increase energy efficiency are actively progressed all over the world. Especially, with the problems of high oil price and environmental pollution, LED has made a great attention as a new luminous source that can replace the existing incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lights. In this paper, the proposed streetlight system becomes more intellectual by combining the low power consuming, high efficient, and high luminous LED module with a complex sensor module with temperature, humidity, illumination and motion sensors. Then, we design and implement the Ad-Hoc based LED-IT-Sensor integrated streetlight system that can maximize the energy savings efficiently with central monitoring system and selective remote dimming control by connecting them to the wireless ubiquitous sensor network(USN) using a Zigbee module.

Remote Temperature Control System using a Zigbee Communication (지그비 통신을 이용한 원격 온도제어 시스템)

  • In this paper, a remote control system capable of monitoring and controlling the temperature of a refrigerator in real time using the ZigBee communication technology is developed. The developed system provides 24-hour surveillance function including temperature maintenance and it is able to determine monitored data from a remote location and to change the setting of the temperature value. In case the value is out of the setting, it is designed for administrators to verify the problem and take action, sending alarms to management server and the emergency to a preset administrator via SMS. Applying this system to refrigerators storing commercial, medical, and experimental material, the real time status such as temperature and malfunction of refrigerator can be managed up to 16 SZM(Slave Zigbee Module) by only one MZM(Master Zigbee Module).

  • In this paper, Implementation of location estimation system using wireless communication technology based on Zigbee. Using wireless communication technology, calculation more accurate location information and service location information to the H/W and S/W has been developed. Receivers, repeaters, smart tag(location device), was developed for implement a location estimation system. The smart tag is built the 120~130KHz, 13~14MHz, 2.0~3.0GHz radio frequency tag. Receiver and repeater is applied to the tag module to recognize the location device's active RFID tags transmit a wireless signal for tag identification. Common Entrance control system in contact with a smart tag, It was implemented to transfer the value of the tag to the access control server over a LAN.

  • In the ad-hoc wireless network environment, that the fixed sensor nodes and the sensor nodes to move are mixed, as the number of the sensor nodes with mobility are getting more, the costs to recover and maintain the whole network will increase more and more. This paper proposed the CDSR (Cost based Dynamic Source Routing) algorithm being motivated from the typical DSR algorithm, that is one of the reactive routing protocol. The cost function is defined through measuring the cost which any sensor node pays to participate in the whole network for communication. It is also showed in this paper that the proposed routing algorithm will increase the efficiency and life of whole sensor network through a series of experiments.

  • Large-scale petrochemical and power plants has increased demanting wireless technology for continuous monitoring. However, the current USN technologies, such as ZigBee and Bluetooth, are lackof reliability and security. Therefore, there is a strong need to apply a new wireless technology standard of the ISA. In this study, a petrochemicalplant safety management system based on the ISA wireless transmitter isdeveloped. ISA100.11a communication module and LTE communication module equippedwith an explosion-proof wireless transmitter are developed. A petrochemicalplant safety management system is built based on the IoT technologies. Thedeveloped system is verified through a wide range of testing and thus, on-siteapplicability is proved.

Construction Site Safety Management System Using ZigBee Communication (지그비 통신을 이용한 건설 현장 안전 관리 시스템)

  • Recently, looking at construction sites with either large or small scale, accidents like collision, fall, etc. occur often. These accidents lead to not only damage of human lives but also serious economic loss. In case of large scale constructions sites, safety management systems are used to reduce industrial accidents. However in construction sites with small scale, those systems cannot be applied due to problems such as lack of compatability and high installation expense. In this case, just by putting on safety gears can also reduce industrial accidents. Therefore, in this paper, a safety management systems that can be used at both large and small scale construction sites is proposed. This safety management system consists of a smart module, a repeater and a gateway, and a monitoring system. The smart module, which is detachable, is attached to a safety helmet. This module transfers the current status of the user to the monitoring system through the repeater and the gateway. The repeater transfers the data received from the smart module to the gateway, and the gateway sends the data from the repeater to the monitoring system. The monitoring system shows the user status to the safety supervisor by displaying the data - temperature, height, intensity of illumination, images - received from the smart module. The safety supervisor can monitor the user status in real-time and take immediate action in case of emergency through this monitoring system.

Development and Estimation of a Wireless Controlled Implantable Electric-stimulator for the Blood Pressure Regulation (혈압조절을 위한 모선 제어되는 체내 이식형 전기 자극기의 개발 및 체외 성능 평가)

  • Hypertension is the chronic disease that the 16% of total population are suffering, and it needs to be studied to find alternative treatment because of the tolerance and side effect of medications that may bother some patients. in this paper, we verified practicality of implantable electrical stimulator that can readily change stimulus magnitude and frequency. And this device is possible to stimulate baroreflex or parasympathetic nerve. Therefore we performed in vitro tests and animal experiment for device's operating conditions. This device consist of implantable electrical stimulator and extracorporeal control/monitoring system. Stimulator was designed to make 1Hz~100Hz pulses and it can change continuous or periodic pulse train type. And this device can control stimulator's function and monitor stimulator's status and patients' blood pressure at exterior of body using ZigBee module as wireless telecommunication. We verified that stimulator have error rate under 5% at 50mm depth of organs and, stimulator makes high-efficiency energy with closer position of two electrodes. Also we can confirm the performance of device that decreasing blood pressure and heart rate of a rat by electrical stimulation.
