  • The right half plane (RHP) zeros may cause severe problems, such as undershoots, oscillations and time delay in the transient response of the systems. In this paper, we formulate a linear quadratic type problem to deal with the effects of the RHP zeros in the nonminimum phase systems. Based on the LQ formulation, this paper shows the trade-off relation between undershoot and rising time performances in nonminimum phase systems by using a new performance index which consists of new state and tracking error. And performances of the proposed method are shown via computer simulations.

  • In this note, we provide some examples of polynomials $z^n-p(z)$, where $p(z)={\limits\sum_{k=o}^{n-1}}a_kz^k$, and ${\limits\sum_{k=o}^{n-1}}a_kz^k=1$, $a_k{\geq}0$ for each k such that p(z) has all its zeros on ${\mid}z{\mid}=c<1$, and $z^n-p(z)$ has all its zeros on two circles ${\mid}z{\mid}=1$ and ${\mid}z{\mid}=d<1$.

  • Circulant Feedback Delay Networks (CFDN's), whose feedback matrix is circulant to control the stability of system and time-frequency response easier than unitary one, were recently proposed. However, the drawback of this structure is that the flatness of the frequency response of CFDN's is not enough and it is difficult to adjust the placement of zeros to decrease this problem. Therefore, we propose Modified CFDN's (MCFDN's) consisted of a general recursive filter and CFDN's to maintain maximally the impulse response of CFDN's and improve the flatness of frequency response without adjusting the placement of zeros. The delay unit of a general recursive filter's feedback loop is replaced by CFDN's, are omitted the direct path. We represent the usefulness of MCFDN's to build artificial reverberators and the main parameter to determine characteristics of MCFDN's in this paper.

  • This research is a continuation of a recent paper due to the first author in [9]. Different from previous results, we investigate the value distribution of difference polynomials of moromorphic functions in this paper. In particular, we are interested in the existence of zeros of $f(z)^n({\lambda}f(z+c)^m+{\mu}f(z)^m)-a$, where f is a moromorphic function, n, m are two non-negative integers, and ${\lambda}$, ${\mu}$ are non-zero complex numbers. However, the proof here is obviously different to the one in [9]. We also study difference polynomials of entire functions sharing a common value, which improves the result in [10, 13].

  • Lossless system has been employed to design the perfect reconstruction filter banks and has particularly a close relation with the desing of orthogonal wavelet filter (OWF). With such a relation, we generalize 2-band OWF to the M-band OWF which has an improved performances. The improvement is achieved using the two techniques. One is that the wavelet low pass filter has (N-1)th order regularity with extra zeros while the existing filter has N-th order regularity. The other is that unitary matrix is designed by adding the zeros to the proper positions. As a result, M-band OWF designed by propose method has better performance than M-band OWF designed by exsiting method.

  • This paper presents a compact microstrip triple-mode filter with enhanced skirt characteristics. The presented triple-mode filter configuration supports three transmission poles and three transmission zeros within the nearby passband. Two of transmission zeros are generated by a triple-mode resonator itself, and the third one is generated by small cross-couplings between the I/O ports. Each resonance condition and the transmission zero generation conditions are analyzed using an equivalent circuit. The bandpass filter is designed for a 2.4 GHz WLAN. The filter was fabricated with a relative dielectic constant of 3.5 and a thickness of 0.76 mm. The fabricated filter has a small size ($7.9mm{\times}7.2mm$, i.e., $0.107{\lambda}_g{\times}0.098{\lambda}_g$, where ${\lambda}_g$ is guided wavelength at a center frequency) and shows high performing skirt characteristics.

  • A novel compact and low-loss VHF bandpass filter is presented with enhanced stopband performance using metamaterial zeroth order resonator (ZOR) characteristics. An in-line ZOR filter is initially suggested and changed to have transmission zeros (TZs) due to source-load coupling for effective improvement of the isolation from UHF wireless channels. The proposed filter is smaller than 1/10 of the conventional filters in terms of size and has relatively very low insertion loss (< 1 dB for the electromagnetic (EM) simulation and < 3 dB for the measurement) and return loss (<-20 dB) in the passband due to the approximately 80% size reduction and the higher isolation in the stopband due to the TZs. The circuit and EM simulation are in good agreement with the measurements.

  • The PID tuning algorithm which can be applied generally to processes with varies dynamic characteristics is proposed by Wang[7]. However, it can be applied well to process model without zeros and with $\angle$G(jw)=-${\pi}$/2 and -${\pi}$ point in Nyquist curve, but it gives unsatisfactory tuning performance for processes with zeros and without $\angle$G(jW)=-${\pi}$/2 and -${\pi}$ in Nyquist curve. In this paper, the method which improve it using Pade reduction method is proposed. Satisfactory responses can be expected for processes with various dynamics, including those with low or high order, small or large dead time, monotonic or oscillatory responses. Simulation examples are given to show the effectiveness and flexibility of the controller in handling processes of different characteristics.

  • Gradient-type algorithms for adaptive IIR notch filters are very attractive in terms of both performances and computational requirements. Generally, it is quite difficult to assess their performances analytically. There have been several trials to analyze such adaptive algorithms as the sign and the plain gradient algorithms for some types of adaptive IIR notch filters, but many of them still remain unexplored. Furthermore, analysis techniques used in those trials can not be directly applied to different types of adaptive IIR notch filters. This paper presents a detailed performance analysis of the sign algorithm for a well-known adaptive IIR notch filter with constrained poles and zeros, which can not be done by just applying the related existing analysis techniques, and therefore has not been attempted yet. The steady-state estimation error and mean square error (MSE) of the algorithm are derived in closed forms. Stability bounds of the algorithm are also assessed. extensive simulations are conducted to support the analytical findings.

  • In this paper, we propose an alternate method for determining the uniqueness of the reconstruction of a complex sequence from its phase. Uniqueness constraints could be derived in terms of the zeros of a complex polynomial defined by the DFT of the sequence. However, rooting of complex polynomials of high order is a very difficult problem. Instead of finding zeros of a complex polynomial, the proposed uniqueness criteria show that non-singularity of a matrix can guarantee the uniqueness of the reconstruction of a complex sequence from its phase-only data. It has clear advantage over the rooting method in numerical stability and computational time.
