Two dimensional phase transition and three dimensional propagation of layer structures of liquid crystal film are investigated by using surface second harmonic generation method. We have found a distinctive first order phase transition between a monolayer phase and a stable 3-layer phase of 8CB liquid crystal film.

The purpose of this paper is to identify the group of units of finite local rings of the types ${\mathbb{F}}_2[X]/(X^k)$ and ${\mathbb{Z}}_4[X]/I$, where I is an ideal. It turns out that they are 2-groups and we give explicit direct sum decomposition into cyclic subgroups of 2-power order and their generators.

We performed statistical analysis for a nearby (0.01 < z < 0.05) volume limited ($M_r$ < -19) sample of galaxies via visual inspection and the definition of galaxy pair systems based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 in order to confirm the effects of galaxy interaction on AGN activities. We found that local environmental effects such as galaxy interaction have an influence on the enhancement of the frequency and the strength of the AGN activity. This article is the summary of the paper which will be submitted soon.

We present empirical fiducial sequences for horizontal-branch (HB) stars in a set of bright Galactic globular clusters previously observed in SDSS (An et al. 2008). Mean loci of HB stars are derived on color-magnitude diagrams with multiple color indices (u - g, g - r, g - i, and g - z ) in order to identify foreground/background objects as well as cluster RR Lyrae variables. We compare our fiducial sequences to the model predictions from Yonsei-Yale isochrones and test the accuracy of the stellar evolution models.

The performance of steel MRF with rigid connections, proportioned by adopting different capacity design criteria, is evaluated in order to highlight the effectiveness of static non-linear procedure in predicting the structural seismic behavior. In the framework of the performance-based design, some considerations are made on the basis of the results obtained by both dynamic time histories and push-over analyses, particularly with reference to the damage level and the structure ability to withstand a strong earthquake.

Let f(x) = $x^n\;+\;a$ be a binomial polynomial in Z[x] and $f_m(x)$ be the m-th iterate of f(x). In this work we study a necessary condition to be the Galois group of $f_m(x)$ is isomorphic to a wreath product group $[C_n]^m$ where $C_n$ is a cyclic group of order n.

Let E be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Using Iwasawa theory, we give what seems to be the first general upper bound for the order of vanishing of the p-adic L-function at s = 0, and the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-corank of the Tate-Shafarevich group for all sufficiently large good ordinary primes p.

ZwCL 1447.2+2619 is a merging galaxy cluster at z=0.37 with clear substructures in X-ray emission and galaxy distribution. In addition, the system possesses distinct radio relics. In order to constrain the merger scenario, it is necessary to measure both the distribution and mass of the cluster dark matter. We perform a weak lensing analysis of ZwCL 1447.2+2619 using Subaru imaging data. After carefully addressing instrumental systematics, we detect significant lensing signals. In this talk, our methodology, weak lensing results, and possible merging scenarios will be presented.

The synthesis and some biological properties of $7{\beta} $-[2-(Z)-(2-aminothiazole-4-yl)-2-(N-substitutedcar bonyl)ethoxyiminoacetamido]-3-vinyl-3-cephem-4- carboxylic acid are described. The effect of substituents on the carbamoly group in the 7-side chain were investigated in order to improve antibacterial activities. Two of these new orally active $7{\beta} $-lactam derivatives showed wide expanded antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as good stability to $7{\beta} $ -lactamases.

We present construction methods for free self-orthogonal (self-dual or Type II) codes over ℤ₄[v]/〈v² + 2v〉 which is one of the finite commutative local non-chain Frobenius rings of order 16. By considering their Gray images on ℤ₄, we give a construct method for a code over ℤ₄. We have some new and optimal codes over ℤ₄ with respect to the minimum Lee weight or minimum Euclidean weight.
