  • It is considered that the urea injection DeNOx SCR(selective catalytic reduction) system is the only promising method to satisfy the worldwide NOx emission standards. As for the theoretical aspect, reactants of NO and $NO_2$ with $NH_3$ produce $H_2O$, $N_2$ and $O_2$ which do not harm human beings and environmental as well. The realization of maximum NOx conversion (without using a post oxidation catalyst) is only possible with closed loop controlled urea dosing. It means built-in $NH_3$ gas sensor have to be developed for detecting accurate $NH_3$ concentration for the feedback system. Using YSZ(yttria-stabilized zirconia) as a solid state electrolyte and $In_2O_3$ as a sensing material, this paper aims to study dependable $NH_3$ gas sensor for the promising solution of DeNOx technology, which have a reproducible electric output signal, a high sensitivity and fast response.

  • Zirconia powder containing 3 mol% yttria(3Y-PSZ) with and with out Fe$_2$O$_3$ addition was coated on tile cast iron substrate by plasma spraying method. The erosion experiments were performed at temperatures from $25^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. A gas blast type erosion tester was used to examine erosion behavior of the specimens. The results of 3Y-PSZ coatings showed that tile erosion rate had maximum value at 40$0^{\circ}C$. It coincided with tile results of phase transformation tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase caused by low temperature thermal degradation. The tensile stress relaxation and the micro-hardness improvement significantly influenced on the erosion rate at $600^{\circ}C$. In the case of Fe$_2$O$_3$ added 3Y-PSZ coatings, the erosion rate of tested at $25^{\circ}C$ showed maximum value at 5.0 mol% Fe$_2$O$_3$ added coating. This tendency is caused by the improvement of mechanical properties and the tensile residual stress. The erosion rate at 200'c and 400'L showed significantly decrease by Fe203 addition. This decrease is believed to be the stabilization of the tetragonal phase and the increase of micro-hardness.

  • In recent years, thermal insulation coating technology for automotive engine parts has received significant attention as a means of improving the thermal efficiency of automotive engines. One of the characteristics of thermal insulation coatings is their low thermal conductivity, and, materials such as YSZ (Yttria-stabilized zirconia), which have low thermal conductivity, are used for this purpose. This research presents a study of the changes in the microstructure and thermal conductivity of $8YSZ/SiO_2$ multi compositional thermal insulation coating for different compositions, and particle size distributions of suspension, when it is subjected to suspension plasma spraying. To obtain a porous coating structure, the mixing ratio of 8YSZ and $SiO_2$ particles and the particle sizes of the $SiO_2$ were changed. The microstructure, phase formation behavior, porosity and thermal conductivity of the coatings were analyzed. The porosities were found to be 1.2-32.1%, and the thermal conductivities of the coatings were 0.797-0.369 W/mK. The results of the study showed that the microstructures of the coatings were strongly influenced by the particle size distributions, and that the thermal conductivities of the coatings were greatly impacted by the microstructures of the coatings.

  • The objective of this research is to analyze the fracture toughness of pure and silica co-doped yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) bioceramics containing 0.1 and 0.2 wt.% of alumina, and sintered at a temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$. Because of the relatively easy preparation of the test specimens and the high speed of testing, the Vickers indentation fracture (VIF) technique is more frequently used to evaluate the fracture toughness of biomaterials and hard biological tissues. The Young's modulus and hardness values were obtained by means of nanoindentation and indentation methods. The fracture toughness values of 3Y-TZP bioceramics were calculated and analyzed using 15 equations related to the VIF technique, and loadings of 49.03 and 196.13 N with a Vickers diamond. For validation, the results were compared with fracture toughness values obtained by the single-edge laser-notch beam (SELNB) method with an almost atomically sharp laser-machined initial notch.

  • Zirconia has excellent mechanical properties, such as high fracture toughness, wear resistance, and flexural strength, which make it a candidate for application in bead mills as milling media as well as a variety of components. In addition, enhanced mechanical properties can be attained by adding oxide or non-oxide dispersing particles to zirconia ceramics. In this study, the densification and mechanical properties of YSZ-TiC ceramic composites with different TiC contents and sintering temperatures are investigated. YSZ - x vol.% TiC (x=10, 20, 30) system is selected as compositions of interest. The mixed powders are sintered using hot pressing (HP) at different temperatures of 1300, 1400, and 1500℃. The densification behavior and mechanical properties of sintered ceramics, such as hardness and fracture toughness, are examined.

  • A study on induction plasma deposition with ceramic materials, yttria-stabilized-zirconia ZrO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ (m.p 264O $^{\circ}C$), was conducted with a view developing a new method for nuclear fuel fabrication Before making dense pellets more than 96%TD., the spraying condition was optimized through the process parameters, such as chamber pressure, plasma plate power powder spraying distance, sheath gas composition, probe position, particle size and powders different morphology. The results with a 5mm thick deposit on rectangular planar graphite substrates showed a 97.11% theoretical density when the sheath gas flow rate was Ar/H$_2$120/20 l/min, probe position 8cm, particle size -75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and spraying distance 22cm by AMDRY146 powder. The degree of influence of the main effects on density were powder morphology. particle size, sheath gas composition, plate power and spraying distance, in that order. Among the two parameter interactions, the sheath gas composition and chamber pressure affects density greatly. By using the multi-pellets mold wheel type, the pellet density did not exceed 94%T.D., owing to the spraying angle.

  • 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals, 3Y-TZP) ceramics are emerging as dental implant materials due to their superior optical and mechanical properties as well as excellent biophysical properties, in spite of low bioactivity. In this study, we investigated to sintered properties and microstructural defects of dental zirconia implants fabricated by ceramic injection molding and post-HIP (Hot isostatic pressing) processing and analyzed the processing parameters related with the obtainment of its high sinterd density. Sintered and microstructural parameters, i.e, apparent density, grain size and phase composition of zirconia implants fabricated by injection molding were dependent on the fixtute size and implant type. Maximum sintered density of 99.2% and minimum grain size of 0.3-0.4 ㎛ were obtained from large-scaled 2-body sample. In 1-body ceramic implant, high sintered density of 99.5% was obtained, but it had a little monoclinic phase and wide grain size distribution.

  • Yttria-stabilized TZP alloyed with pentavalent oxides $(Ta_2O_5,\;Nb_2O_5)$ were fabricated by the conventional sintering method at $1500^{\circ}C$ in air to construct the simplified ternary phase diagram. The phase stability of tetragonal -$ZrO_2$ from the quasi-binary system $ZrO_2-YTa(Nb)O_4$, which do not transform to monoclinic-$ZrO_2$ even for a wide range of grain size and annealing temperature, was investigated to determine composition region of the non-transformable $t-ZrO_2$ solid solution$(NT_{ss})$. Phase stability of $NT_{ss}$ was probably due to the enhanced stability of $_YTa(Nb)O4$ having the tetragonal fergusonite structure. It was experimentally found that mixtures having $NT_{ss}$ alloyed with $T_{ss}$ by weight%% showed both excellent phase stability of $t-ZrO_2$ and fracture toughness even though the calculated composition of the mixture /was located outside $NT_{ss}$ composition region.

  • Various ceramic implant systems made of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycystal (Y-TZP) have become commercially available in recent years. A search of the literature was performed to assess the clinical success of dental Y-TZP implants and whether the osseointegration of Y-TZP is comparable to that of titanium, the standard implant material. No controlled clinical studies in humans regarding clinical outcomes or osseointegration could be identified. Clinical data were restricted to case studies and case series. Only 7 animal studies were found. Osseointegration was evaluated at 4 weeks to 24 months after placement in different animal models, sites and under different loading conditions. The mean bone-implant contact percentage was above 60% in almost all experimental groups. In studies that used titanium implants as a control, Y-TZP implants were comparable to or even better than titanium implants. Surface modifications may further improve initial bone healing and resistance to removal torque. Y-TZP implants may have the potential to become an alternative to titanium implants but cannot currently be recommended for routine clinical use, as no long-term clinical data are available.

  • $Y_2O_3$ nanomaterials have been widely used in transparent ceramics and luminescent devices. Recently, many studies have focused on controlling the size and morphology of $Y_2O_3$ in order to obtain better material performance. $Y_2O_3$ powders were prepared under a modified solvothermal condition involving precipitation from metal nitrates with aqueous ammonium hydroxide. The powders were obtained at temperatures at $250^{\circ}C$ after a 6h process. The properties of the $Y_2O_3$ powders were studied as a function of the solvent ratio. The synthesis of $Y_2O_3$ crystalline particles is possible under a modified solvothermal condition in a water/ethylene glycol solution. Solvothermal processing condition parameters including the pH, reaction temperature and solvent ratio, have significant effects on the formation, phase component, morphology and particle size of yttria powders. Ethylene glycol is a versatile, widely used, inexpensive, and safe capping organic molecule for uniform nanoparticles besides as a solvent. The characterization of the synthesized Y2O3 powders were studied by XRD, SEM (FE-SEM) and TG/DSC. An X-ray diffraction analysis of the synthesized powders indicated the formation of the $Y_2O_3$ cubic structure upon calcination. The average crystalline sizes and distribution of the synthesized $Y_2O_3$ powders was less than 2 um and broad, respectively. The synthesized particles were spherical and hexagonal in shape. The morphology of the synthesized powders changed with the water and ethylene glycol ratio. The average size and shape of the synthesized particles could be controlled by adjusting the solvent ratio.
