In this work, virtual material characterization of 3D orthogonal woven composites is performed to predict the elastic properties by a full scale FEA. To model the complex geometry of 3D orthogonal woven composites, an accurate unit structure is first prepared. The unit structure includes warp yarns, filler yarns, stuffer yams and resin regions and reveals the geometrical characteristics. For this virtual experiments by using finite element analysis, parallel multifrontal solver is utilized and the computed elastic properties are compared to available experimental results and the other analytical results. It is founded that a good agreement between material properties obtained from virtual characterization and experimental results. Using the method of this virtual material characterization, the effects of inconsistent filler yarn distribution on the in-plane shear modulus and filler yarn waviness on the transverse Young's modulus are investigated. Especially, the stiffness knockdown of 3D woven composite structures is simulated by virtual characterization. Considering these results, the virtual material characterization of composite materials can be used for designing the 3D complex composite structures and may supplement the actual experiments.

With shrinking form factor and improving performance of electronic packages, high input/output (I/O) density is considered as an important factor. Fan out wafer-level packaging (FO-WLP) has been paid great attention as an alternative. However, FO-WLP is vulnerable to warpage during its manufacturing process. Minimizing warpage is essential for controlling production yield, and in turn, package reliability. While many studies investigated the effect of process and design parameters on warpage using finite element analysis, they did not take uncertainty into consideration. As parameters, including material properties, chip positions, have uncertainty from the point of manufacturing view, the uncertainty should be considered to reduce the gap between the results from the field and the finite element analysis. This paper focuses on the effect of uncertainty of Young's modulus of chip on fan-out wafer level packaging warpage using finite element analysis. It is assumed that Young's modulus of each chip follows the normal distribution. Simulation results show that the uncertainty of Young's modulus affects the maximum von Mises stress. As a result, it is necessary to control the uncertainty of Young's modulus of silicon chip since the maximum von Mises stress is a parameter related to the package reliability.

In this paper, we deposited the tungsten carbon nitride (W-C-N; nitrogen gas flow of 2 sccm) and tungsten carbon (W-C) thin film on silicon substrate using rf magnetron sputter. Then the thin films annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ during 30 minute ($N_2$ gas ambient) for thermal damage. Nano-indenter was executed 16 points on thin film surface to measure the thermal stability, and we also propose the elastic modulus and the Weibull distribution, respectively. This nanotribology method provides statistically reliable information. From these results, the W-C-N thin film included nitrogen gas flow is more stable for film uniformities, physical properties and crystallinities than that of not included nitrogen gas flow.
Recent development in composites containing phase-transforming particles, such as vanadium dioxide or barium titanate, reveals the overall stiffness and viscoelastic damping of the composites may be unbounded (Lakes et al. 2001, Jaglinski et al. 2007). Negative stiffness is induced from phase transformation predicted by the Landau phase transformation theory. Although this unbounded phenomenon is theoretically supported with the composite homogenization theory, detailed stress analyses of the composites are still lacking. In this work, we analyze the stress distribution of the Hashin-Shtrikman (HS) composite and its two-dimensional variant, namely a circular inclusion in a square plate, under the assumption that the Young's modulus of the inclusion is negative. Assumption of negative stiffness is a priori in the present analysis. For stress analysis, a closed form solution for the HS model and finite element solutions for the 2D composite are presented. A static loading condition is adopted to estimate the effective modulus of the composites by the ratio of stress to average strain on the loading edges. It is found that the interfacial stresses between the circular inclusion and matrix increase dramatically when the negative stiffness is so tuned that overall stiffness is unbounded. Furthermore, it is found that stress distributions in the inclusion are not uniform, contrary to Eshelby's theorem, which states, for two-phase, infinite composites, the inclusion's stress distribution is uniform when the shape of the inclusion has higher symmetry than an ellipse. The stability of the composites is discussed from the viewpoint of deterioration of perfect interface conditions due to excessive interfacial stresses.
We have performed deep wide-field CCD photometry of the young open cluster IC 1805 in the famous star forming region W4, and obtained photometric data for more than 91,000 stars in the field of IC 1805 based on observations with the 3.6m CFHT and the AZT-22 1.5m telescope at Maidanak Astronomical Observatory in Uzbekistan. The photometric data cover an area $43^{\prime}{\times}45^{\prime}$ which is far larger and far deeper than any other optical observations made for the cluster. In order to select the young stellar objects with mid-IR excess emission, we have performed mid-IR photometry of the cluster using the archival images obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC and MIPS instruments. From a preliminary analysis of the data, we determined the reddening law ($R_V=3.02{\pm}0.05$), distance modulus ($V_0-M_V=11.9{\pm}0.2$), and the spatial distribution of members.
The goal of this study is to fill this apparent gap in the area about vibration analysis of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) curved panels by providing 3-D vibration analysis results for functionally graded multiwalled carbon nanotubes (FG-MWCNTs) sandwich structure with power-law distribution of nanotube. The effective material properties of the FG-MWCNT structures are estimated using a modified Halpin-Tsai equation. Modified Halpin-Tsai equation was used to evaluate the Young's modulus of MWCNT/epoxy composite samples by the incorporation of an orientation as well as an exponential shape factor in the equation. The exponential shape factor modifies the Halpin-Tsai equation from expressing a straight line to a nonlinear one in the MWCNTs wt% range considered. Also, the mass density and Poisson's ratio of the MWCNT/phenolic composite are considered based on the rule of mixtures. Parametric studies are carried out to highlight the influence of MWCNT volume fraction in the thickness, different types of CNT distribution, boundary conditions and geometrical parameters on vibrational behavior of FG-MWCNT thick curved panels. Because of using two-dimensional generalized differential quadrature method, the present approach makes possible vibration analysis of cylindrical panels with two opposite axial edges simply supported and arbitrary boundary conditions including Free, Simply supported and Clamped at the curved edges. For an overall comprehension on 3-D vibration analysis of sandwich panel, some mode shape contour plots are reported in this research work.

Applying force-distance curve measurement by atomic force microscopy to a theoretical mechanical model gives us elastic properties of polymer surfaces. Our group focuses on force-mapping method, in which force-distance curve is performed at each lattice point on a sample surface and subsequently a variety of properties derived from analytical results are combined to construct a 2-dimensional image. With this method we succeeded in deriving Young' s modulus distribution map method of rubbery/rubbery polymer blend surfaces with ${\sim}100\;nm$ lateral resolution. We also applied force-mapping method to another theory to divide distribution of hardness from that of adhesion. We will demonstrate recent progress.

Optmal topology design is to search the optimal layout of the structure which can be used fot the shape of the conceptual design stage. Our objective is to maximize the stiffness of the structure under a material usage constraint. The density of each finite element is the design variable and its relationship with Young's modulus is expressed by quadratic form. The shape is represented by the entire density distribution, the structural analysis is performed by finite element method and the optimization is achieved by feasible direction method. Unlike optimality criteria method, feasible direction method can handle various problems simultaneously, that is, multi- objectives and multi-constraints. Total optimization time can be reduced by the approximation of the material property and fewer design variables than homogenization method. Topology optimization is applied to design the shape of ribs.

Optimal topology design is to search the optimal configuration of a structure which can be used as a shape at the conceptual design stage. Our objective is to maximize the stiffness of the structures and ribs under a material usage constraintl. Total computation time can be reduced by the quadratic relationship between the density and the material property and fewer design variables than Homogenization Method. Toplogy optimization technique developed in this research is applied to design the shapes of the ribs.
In this study, free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) porous truncated conical shell panels reinforced by graphene platelets (GPLs) has been investigated for the first time. Additionally, the effect of three different types of porosity distribution and five different types of GPLs patterns on dynamic response of the shell are also studied. Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model and Voigt's rule are used to determine Young modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio with mass densities of the shell, respectively. The main novelties of present study are: applying 3D elasticity theory and the finite element method in conjunction with Rayleigh-Ritz method to give more accurate results unlike other simplified shell theories, and also presenting a general 3D solution in cylindrical coordinate system that can be used for analyses of different structures such as circular, annular and annular sector plates, cylindrical shells and panels, and conical shells and panels. A convergence study is performed to justify the correctness of the obtained solution and numerical results. The impact of porosity and GPLs patterns, the volume of voids, the weight fraction of graphene nanofillers, semi vertex and span angles of the cone, and various boundary conditions on natural frequencies of the functionally graded panel have been comprehensively studied and discussed. The results show that the most important parameter on dynamic response of FG porous truncated conical panel is the weight fraction of nanofiller and adding 1% weight fraction of nanofiller could increase 57% approximately the amounts of natural frequencies of the shell. Moreover, the porosity distribution has great effect on the value of natural frequency of structure rather than the porosity coefficient.
