  • The electrolytic reduction of spent oxide fuel involves the liberation of oxygen in a molten LiCl electrolyte, which results in a chemically aggressive environment that is too corrosive for typical structural materials. It is essential to choose the optimum material for the process equipment handling molten salt. IN713LC is one of the candidate materials proposed for application in electrolytic reduction process. In this study, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) top coat was applied to a surface of IN713LC with an aluminized metallic bond coat by an optimized plasma spray process, and were investigated the corrosion behavior at $675^{\circ}C$ for 216 hours in the molten salt $LiCl-Li_2O$ under an oxidizing atmosphere. The as-coated and tested specimens were examined by OM, SEM/EDS and XRD, respectively. The bare superalloy reveals obvious weight loss, and the corrosion layer formed on the surface of the bare superalloy was spalled due to the rapid scale growth and thermal stress. The top coatings showed a much better hot-corrosion resistance in the presence of $LiCl-Li_2O$ molten salt when compared to those of the uncoated superalloy and the aluminized bond coatings. These coatings have been found to be beneficial for increasing to the hot-corrosion resistance of the structural materials for handling high temperature lithium molten salts.

  • In the RABiTS approach to coated conductor development, successful (both economic and technological) depends on the refinement and optimization of each of three important components: the metal tape substrate, the buffer layer(s), and the HTS layer. Here we will report on the ORNL approach and progress in each of these areas. - Most applications will require metal tapes with low magnetic hysteresis, mechanical strength, and excellent crystalline texture. Some of these requirements are competing. We report on progress in obtaining a good combination of these characteristics on metal alloys of Ni-Cr and Ni-W. - The deposition of appropriate buffer layers is a crucial step. Recently, base research has shown that the presence of a stable sulfur superstructure present on the metal surface is needed for the nucleation and epitaxial growth of vapor-deposited seed buffer layers such as YSZ, CeO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$. We report on the details and control of this superstructure for nickel tapes, as well as recent results for Cu and Ni-13%Cr. - Processes for deposition of the HTS coating must economically provide large values of the figure-of-merit for conductors, current x length. At ORNL, we have devoted efforts to a precursor/post-annealing approach to YBCO coatings, for which the deposition and reaction steps are separate. We describe motivation for and progress toward developing this approach. - Finally, we address some issues for the implementation of coated conductors in real applications, including the need for texture control and electrical stabilization of the HTS coating.

  • Batch type co-evaporation EDDC (Evaporation using Drum in Dual Chambers) system was recently manufactured to fabricate 100m - long SmBCO superconducting coated conductor. As a preliminary study before the fabrication of long tape. short CC samples have been fabricated using the EDDC system and their crystal texture and $I_c$ properties were investigated. $1.2 {\mu}m$-thick SmBCO layers were deposited on $CeO_2/YSZ/CeO_2$ buffered Ni-W tapes. $I_c$ of 128A/cm-w and corresponding $J_c$ of $1.1 MA/cm^2$ at 77K in self-field were obtained for SmBCO CC tape. In-field property of SmBCO CC was confirmed to be better than that of YBCO deposited by PLD.

  • Sr0.92Y0.08Ti1-xVxO3-δ (SYTV) with perovskite structure was investigated as an alternative anode to utilize H2S containing fuels in solid oxide fuel cells. To improve the electrochemical performance of Sr0.92Y0.08TiO3-δ (SYT), vanadium(V) was substituted to titanium(Ti) at the B-site of the SYT perovskites. The SYTV synthesized by the Pechini method was chemically compatible with the YSZ electrolyte without additional by-products formation under the cell fabricating conditions. As increasing V substitution amounts, the oxygen vacancies increased, resulting to increasing ionic conductivity of the anode. The cell performance in pure H2 at 850 ℃ is 19.30 mW/cm2 and 34.87 mW/cm2 for a 1 mol.% and 7 mol.% of V substituted anodes, respectively. The cell performance using H2 fuel containing 1000 ppm of H2S at 850 ℃ was 23.37 mW/cm2 and 73.11 mW/cm2 for a 1 mol.% and 7 mol.% of V substituted anodes, respectively.

  • YBCO coated conductor is one of the most promising materials as a new generations wire especially for practical power applications. In this work, $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$ -$\delta$/(YBCO) coated conductors (CC) were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) from buffer layers to superconducting layer on hi-axially textured metal tape. The oxide multilayer buffered substrate of architectures of $CeO_2$/$YSZ/Y_2$$O_3$ was fabricated by PLD at steady status. Then YBCO layer was deposited on RABiTS substrate by stationary and reel-to-reel (R2R) continuous process and we compared with deposition conditions of both processes. The degree of texture of each layer was investigated using X-ray diffraction including $\theta$-2$\theta$ scans, $\omega$-scans and $\Phi$-scans analysis. Their surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FWHM of the X-ray $\Phi$-scans and $\Phi$-scans indicated that YBCO and buffer layers closely replicate the in-plane and out-of-plane texture of metal tape. Critical current (Ic) at 77 K, self-field of 75.8 A/cm-width, critical temperature (Tc) of 85 K, and critical current density (Ic) of 3.7 MA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were measured from coated conductor deposited by stationary process. And coated conductor deposited by R2R continuous process had Ic of 57.5 A/cm-width, Tc of 86.5 K and Jc of 2.0 MA/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The film also exhibits a homogeneous and dense surface morphology.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of using mixed rare earth $(Nd_{1/3}Eu_{1/3}Gd_{1/3})Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (NEG123) as the superconducting layer of the HTS coated conductor, the NEG123 thin film was deposited epitaxialy on LAO(100) single crystal and IBAD_YSZ metal templates by pulsed laser deposition. Systematic studies were carried out to investigate the influences of deposition parameters of PLD on the micro structure, texture and superconducting properties of NEG-123 coated conductor. Deposition at oxygen partial pressure of 600 mTorr was needed to routinely obtain high quality NEG123 films with $J_c$'s (77K) over 2 MA/$cm^2$ and Tc's over 90K (${\Delta}T{\sim}2\;K$). We verified from magnetization study that the NEG123 has an improved in-field Jc as the field increases at temperatures between 10 K and 77 K compared with Gd123. The $J_c$ (77K, self field) and the value of onset $T_c$ of NEG123 thin film on LAO substrate was $4.0MA/cm^2$ and 92K, respectively. This is the first report, to the best of our knowledge, of coated conductors with NEG123 film as the superconducting layer which have Ic and Jc over 40 A/cm-width and 1.6 MA/$cm^2$ at 77K, self field. This study shows the possibility of using NEG123 film as the superconducting layer of the HTS coated conductor which can be used in high magnetic field power electric devices.

  • Coating materials used in the electron beam (EB) deposition method, which is being studied as one of the fabrication methods of thermal barrier coating, are exposed to high power electron beam at focused area during the EB deposition. Therefore the coating source for EB process is needed to form as ingot with appropriate density and microstructure to sustain their shape and stable melts status during EB deposition. In this study, we tried to find the optimum powder condition for fabrication of ingot of 8 wt% yttria stabilized zirconia which can be used for EB irradiation. It seems that the ingot, which is fabricated through bi-modal type initial powder mixture which consists of tens of micro and nano size particles, was shown better performance than the ingot which is fabricated using monolithic nanoscale powder when exposed to high power EB.
