  • A toluene-degrading bacterial strain was isolated from a mixed culture that was maintained using toluene as a sole carbon and energy source. The isolated bacterium was classified as Pseudomonas sp. TBD4 based on the close relationship to bacteria belonging to this genus. A bottle study to determine biodegradation rates of individual aromatic compounds showed that the biodegradation was faster in the order of toluene, benzene, styrene, and p-xylene. However, when various mixtures were subjected to TDB4, styrene was degraded at the highest rate, indicating that both toluene and p-xylene could stimulate the degradation of other substrates whereas styrene played as an inhibitor. In addition, the mixed culture and TDB4 were inoculated to the bioactive foam reactor (BFR), and the reactor performance and the corresponding change of microbial community were monitored using the fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method. When an inlet concentration of the VOC mixture increased to greater than 250 ppm, the overall removal efficiency dropped significantly. The FISH measurement demonstrated that the ratio of TDB4 to the total bacteria also decreased to less than 20% along with the decline in removal efficiency in the BFR. As a result, the periodic addition of the pre-grown TDB4 might have been beneficial to achieve a stable performance in the BFR operated over an extended period.

Enhanced Transport and Risk of a Highly Nonpolar Pollutant in the Presence of LNAPL in Soil-groundwater System: In Case of p-xylene and benz[a]anthracene (LNAPL에 의한 소수성 유기오염물질의 지하환경 내 이동성 변화가 위해성 증가에 미치는 영향: p-xylene과 benz[a]anthracene의 경우)

  • Characterizing the risk posed by a mixture of chemicals is a challenging task due to the chemical interactions of individual components that may affect their physical behavior and hence alter their exposure to receptors. In this study, cell tests that represent subsurface environment were carried out using benz[a]anthracene (BaA) and p-xylene focusing on phasetransforming interaction to verify increased mobility and risk of highly sorbed pollutants in the presence of less sorbed, mobile liquid pollutants. A transport model was also developed to interpret results and to simulate the same process on a field scale. The experimental results showed that BaA had far greater mobility in the presence of p-xylene than in the absence of that. The main transport mechanisms in the vadose zone were by dissolution to p-xylene or water. The transport model utilizing Defined Time Steps (DTS) was developed and tested with the experimental results. The predicted and observed values showed similar tendency, but the more work is needed in the future study for more precise modeling. The field-scale simulation results showed that transport of BaA to groundwater table was significantly faster in the presence of NAPL, and the oral carcinogenic risk of BaA calculated with the concentration in groundwater was 15${\sim}$87 times larger when mixed with NAPL than when solely contaminated. Since transport rate of PAHs is very slow in the subsurface without NAPL and no degradation of PAHs was considered in this simulation during the transport, the increase of risk in the presence of NAPL is expected to be greater for the actual contaminated site.

  • In order to propose the method of the consequence analysis for fire accidents by the heavy gas release and to obtain optimum conditions of parameter selections, the consequence analysis for jet fire by the accident of xylene vapor release were performed. And the effect and the sensitivity analysis of parameters affecting the consequence were investigated. Simulation results showed that important parameters affecting results of the xylene vapor release accident were mainly hole diameter, interested distance, wind speed, and so on. For the jet fire, the accident result and the sensitivity of thermal radiation were increased with the decrease of interested distance and the increase of hole diameters, and the accidental result was increased as the increase wind speed, but the sensitivity of thermal radiation was decreased.

  • Porous SiC beads were prepared by freeze-drying a polycarbosilane (PCS) emulsion. The water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion, which was composed of water, PCS dissolved p-xylene, and sodium xylenesulfonate (SXS) as an emulsifier, was frozen by dropping it onto a liquid $N_2$ bath; this process resulted in 1~2 mm sized beads. Beads were cured at $200^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air and heat-treated at $800^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in an Ar gas flow. Two types of pores, lamella-shaped and spherical pores, were observed. Lamellar-shaped pores were found to develop during the freezing of the xylene solvent. Water droplets in the w/o emulsion were changed into spherical pores under freeze-drying. At $1400^{\circ}C$ of heat-treatment, porous SiC was synthesized with a low level of impurities.

  • An organic solvent-tolerant Pseudomonas savastanoi strain BCNU 106 was isolated.. This bacterium was gram negative rod, and showed oxidase positive, catalase positive, and decaboxylase positive reactions. The Pseudomonas strain oxidized cholesterol on the medium supplemented with an organic solvent. The strain BCNU 106 is able to grow in presence of organic solvents of which log $P_{ow}$ is between 1.5 to 7.0. The strain was well grown in a medium supplemented with a 10% volume of a organic solvent (toluene, p-xylene, cyclohexane, mesitlylene) containing $cholesterol(20mg/m{\ell)$. Major conversion compound were 7-dehydrocholesteryl dimethylphosphate, cholesta-4,7-dien-3-one, and cholesta-3,5-dieone.

  • To separate BTX degrading microorganisms, four kinds of activated sludges were obtained from waste water treatment plants and VOC generating plants, and adjusted 500 mg/L of BTX for three months. Y consortia degraded benzene and toluene in either individual or mixed compounds fast whereas A consortia degraded p-, m-, o-xylene fast.
