Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the wound healing potential of Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract. Methods : Free radical scavenging activity tests for DPPH, peroxynitrite (ONOO) and hydroxyl radical (${\cdot}OH$) and total phenolic contents of Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract were conducted. Tube formation assay was performed using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Results : The results showed that Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract exerted inhibitory effects on ONOO and ${\cdot}OH$. Tube formation in HUVEC was increase in a dose dependent manner. Conclusions : These results show the potential to promote the wound healing process by Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract.
This study was designed to examine therapeutic effect of honeybee venom on wound healing in tail-docked dog. Blood samples were taken of jugular vein and hematological values were analyzed in condition of pre,3- and 6-day after canine caudectomy. Apitherapy group was subcutaneously treated with an Italian honeybee(Apis mellifera ligustica). Antibiotic therapeutic group was intramuscularly iaiected with a standard dosage ol'penicluin ,G procaine(20,000 Units/kg of body weight). Changes of leucocyte, erynlrocytel hematocrit, platelet and fibrinogen were not significantly different between bee sting and penicillin injection during wound healing. No changes of wound healing in tine tests, groups were onseren. Whole honeybee venom has been shown to have a antiinflammatory effect in tail-docked dog. It may be concluded that honeybee venom is effective drug being useful far wound healing and disinfection without tissue trauma in dog.
Vacuum-assisted wound healing has been proven to be more efficacious than conventional dressings. Vacuum dressing has been frequently modified given the restrictions in resources available. Here we present a modified method of vacuum dressing by using surgical or gynaecological gloves for lower and upper limb wounds. Vacuum dressing was applied with parts of a surgical or gynaecological glove and Opsite with T-tailing of the suction outlet. Vacuum-assisted wound healing using the surgical gloves showed relatively good wound healing in the amputation stump, finger, arm, and leg in the cases studied.
Purpose: On this study, we investigated the effects of curcumin and adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) in wound healing process, especially in the aspect of synergic effects when they were administrated simultaneously. Methods: Curcumin (40 mg/kg) and/or $1.0{\times}10^6$ ADSCs were applied to an $1.5{\times}1.5\;cm$-sized full thickness wound on the backs of male Lewis rats (n=5 in each group). In control group (n=5), saline was administrated instead of curcumin and ASCs. The wound size was followed by computer planimetry in 5, 7, and 14 days, and wounds were harvested for histological analysis in 7 and 14 days. Results: The dimensions of wounds of curcumin, ADSCs, and curcumin-ADSCs group significantly decreased in 5, 7, 14 days compared with those of control group (p<0.05), but there were no significant differences among three groups. The wound sizes were lowest in curcumin-ADSCs group compared with the other groups, but the differences were insignificant (p>0.05). There were infiltration of more epithelization and more precisely organization of extracellular matrix in curcumin, ADSCs, and curcumin-ADSCs group compared with those of control group. Conclustion: The results suggest that curcumin and ADSCs have beneficial effects in the acceleration of wound healing. Although the simultaneous application of curcmin and ADSCs also has beneficial effects on wound healing, there are no significant synergic effects.
Research was undertaken to compare the pharmacological activity of Lithospermi radix (LR) reported as an oriental medicine for classical uses. LR contains naphthoquinone pigments : shikonin, acetylshikonin, isobutylshikonin, etc. LR is used for the treatment of excision wound, burn, eczema, blister, scarlatina and septicemia as antifebrile, antidotic and antiphlogistic. Gardeniae fructus (GF) has been used for the treatment to jaundice, hepatic disease, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, and it contains crocin, geniposide and its derivatives. The therapeutic effects of burn and excision wound healing from LR & GF hydrogel with $Nano-ATP^{\circledR}$ (GLN) were investigated. To evaluate the therapeutic value of various hydrogels, thermal burn model and excision wound mouse model were used. The burn and wound reduction rate and therapeutic period were measured to calculate the healing extent after 5 experiments. The 2nd degree burn was prepared on hairless mouse back skin and dressing with collagen. The burn and wound reduction rate of GLN hydrogel treated group decreased more rapidly than that of other gel group in animal model. Furthermore therapeutic periods of GLN hydrogel treated group was shorter than that of other gel group. In anti-inflammatory test, GLN hydrogel treated group decreased edema rapidly than that of other gel group. These results suggest that the GLN hydrogel treatment has an therapeutic effect on burn and excision wound healing.

Purpose: This study was designed to compare the wound healing effect of silk fibroin, alginate and fibroin/ alginate blend sponge with clinically used Nu gauze in a rat skin defect model. Methods: Two full thickness excisions were made on the back of Sprague-Dawley rat. The excised wound was covered with either of the silk fibroin(SF), alginate (SA), or fibroin/alginate blend sponge(SF/SA). On the postoperative days of 3, 7, 10 and 14, the wound area was calculated by image analysis software. At the same time, a skin wound tissue was biopsied. Results: Healing time 50% ($HT_{50}$) of SF/SA sponge treated group was dramatically reduced as compared with that of control treatment. We also found that the $HT_{50}$ of SF/SA sponge was significantly decreased as compared with either those of SF or SA treatment. Furthermore, SF/SA treatment significantly increased the size of epithelialization and collagen deposition as well as the number of PCNA positive cells on epidermal basement membrane as comapred with those of control treatment. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the wound healing effect of SF/SA blend sponge is the best among other treatments including SF and SA during the whole wound healing period.
Aucubin, the natural product, which is isolated from Aucuba japonica, has a variety of pharmacological effects such as liver-protective function, inhibition of liver RNA and protein biosynthesis, hypotensive activity and antimicrobial effect, etc. This study was performed to investigate the effects of iridoid compounds on wound healing. The author prepared 0.1% aucubin solution and 0.1% aucubin ointment as an active form, aucubigenin to which aucubin was converted by ${\beta}$-glucosidase. Artificial surgical wound was made on either 1cm lateral side of the dorsal midline along the axis of spine of Sprague-Dawley rats under sterile technique. Application of 0.1% aucubin solution or 0.1% aucubin ointment to surgical wound was done daily. Light microscopic examination was performed on the postsurgical 3 days, 5 days, and 9 days. The 0.1% aucubin solution group epithelialized earlier than the control group and the fibrosis of granulation tissue of both aucubin groups were more prominent than the control group. Collectively, this study suggests the possibility of aucubin as a topical agent. Further research should be performed on the mechanism of aucubin on wound healing and proper formulation for effective topical agents.
Purpose: Oncostatin M(OSM) has been known as a role in fibrosis and anti-inflammatory effects of various organs and tissues. Although there have been a number of studies which are focused on the roles and mechanisms of OSM, there are few reports on its effects in chronic wound healing. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of OSM in wound healing activities of dermal fibroblasts of chronic wound in vitro. In particular, this study is focused on cell proliferation and synthesis of collagen and glycosaminoglycan(GAG), which are the major components of the extracellular matrices, of diabetic fibroblasts. Methods: Fibroblasts were isolated from excess skin that was obtained from diabetic foot ulcer patients who underwent debridement. The isolated fibroblasts were cultivated in presence of OSM(100 ng/mL). Cell proliferation, collagen synthesis and GAG levels were compared. Results: All the components tested in this study increased in OSM treatment group. In particular, collagen and GAG synthesis demonstrated statistically significant increases(p<0.05 in the Mann-Whitney U-test). Conclusion: These results indicate that OSM increases wound healing activities of dermal fibroblasts of chronic wound in vitro.
A 9-year-old intact female Poodle (weighing 3.6 kg) was presented for the treatment of a partial and full thickness burn that covering 45% of body including bilateral thigh and sacrolumbar region. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) stimulates angiogenesis, promoting vascular in-growth and fibroblast proliferation. On the unrecovered right thigh of the dog, autologous PRP was injected into the lesion after application of micro-needles. For macroscopic evaluation digital, photographs were taken from wounds at days 0, 3, 5, 13, 21, and 28. On the $3^{rd}$ day after PRP application, epithelialization was accelerated. Application of autologous PRP accelerated wound-healing rate and healing time in full thickness burns as well as secondary complications originating from unrecovered wounds. The delayed lesion was completely healed on the $28^{th}$ day by autologous PRP treatment. In human, PRP was increasingly used in the treatment of a variety of soft tissue in the management of chronic non-healing wounds. This study has shown that PRP treatment can be a valuable and effective aid on intractable wound healing in the dog with burns.
Purpose: This study investigated the effect of needle electrode stimulation at various frequencies on change in wound healing in excision wound rats Methods: Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley adult male rats were assigned to one of four groups: control (n=6), acupuncture group (n=6), low rate (2 Hz) percutaneous electrical stimulation group, high rate (100 Hz) percutaneous electrical stimulation group (n=6). We analyzed morphological effects by measuring the area of the excision wound, the contraction rate, and chromatic red. A digital camera and an image analysis program were used to measure and analyze the wound area, which was also used for the contraction rate. Chromatic red was obtained by calculating red, green, and blue (RGB) values of the wound area. Results: The electro acupuncture stimulation groupsshowed significant healing effects compared to the control and acupuncture groups. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that various frequencies of percutaneous electrical stimulation have a therapeutic effect on wound healing.
