  • A novel high birefringent polymer terahertz (THz) fiber with a suspended elliptical core is proposed in this paper. The introduction of an elliptical core can enhance asymmetry to realize high mode birefringence, and a large porous outer cladding effectively isolates the core-guided mode from interacting with the surrounding environment. A full-vector finite element method(FEM) is used to analyze the characteristics of the THz fiber. Simulation results show that the suspended elliptical fiber exhibits high mode birefringence on a level of $10^{-2}$ over a wide frequency range, and an extremely large mode birefringence(${\approx}0.06226$) is obtained when ellipticity is 0.2. Moreover, a suspended hollow elliptical core fiber is also discussed for the purpose of lower loss, however high mode birefringence and low relative absorption loss can not coexist in such a kind of fiber.

  • In this paper, we propose that three uniform coplanar waveguides(CPWs), such as a conventional, finite grounded(FG), and grounded(G) CPWs, can be coupled with a $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode dielectric resonator(DR) for a parallel resonant characteristic as a microstrip line coupled with the DR. Coupling characteristics have been investigated by placing the DR on a dielectric support above the CPWs and by moving the DR away from the center of a slot of the CPWs to the ground plane. FEM simulation(HFSS) results in terms of S-parameters agree well with measurement results. Finally, unloaded Q values of the DR coupled with the three uniform CPWs are compared with those of the DR coupled with a microstrip line. The comparison shows that the DR coupled with the three CPWs has higher unloaded Qs than that coupled with a microstrip line and that the GCPW case has the highest unloaded Qs.

  • In order to effectively utilize the Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing(CWDM) technology in optical integrated devices, a design of a wavelength selective coupler structure between an optical fiber and an optical waveguide in a flat substrate is can be considered. In this paper, we consider the coupling between a silicon waveguide with an air trench and a single mode fiber. We investigated the tendency of coupling efficiency and its limitations according to the grating depth. For this purpose, the coupling efficiency of coupler structure designed through modeling based on coupled mode theory is predicted and quantitatively compared with simulation results using finite element method.

  • This paper describes an analysis of tunable characteristic for magnetically tunable E-plane type finline filter on a ferrite substrate. The proposed design is based on using of quarter wavelength transmission line for compensating the negative length transmission line of end K-inverters of E-plane type waveguide filters and the tunable characteristics of designed filters are analyzed. The analysis results of filter and inverter structure loaded with finline on a ferrite substrate are obtained using the edge based finite element method including higher order mode effects. The X-band experimental results for bilateral and unilateral finline magnetically tunable E-plane type waveguide filters agree well with the simulated data.

  • Rectangular waveguide slot antenna which has simple structure, high efficiency, high trust and small size, is extending in a field of application such as many Radar and Microwave communication. A slot cut into a wall of waveguide is propagated electromagnetic wave to free space it interrtupts the flow of current inner conductor of waveguide. Therefore incident of slot, cutdepth, width, length, i.e. are important parameter of characteristic change of the slot antenna. Result from difficulty of theoretical analysis about slot frequently experimental measured data useful design and manufacture have been accomplished. In this paper, we find the suitable method of analysis that compare two analysis results with measured result of established literature - admittance of slot be solved by propagated power from electric field distribution of slot and mode current computation and accomplishment of computable chart which hasresonant length and cutdepth, incident of slot, i.e. and use the HFSS which applyed finite-element method obtain equal slot analyed method.

  • An operation temperature of $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ based piezoelectric ultrasonic flowmeter was generally restricted to below 200$^{\circ}C$ due to a low depoling temperature of its ceramic material. Thus, a new designed piezoelectric ultrasonic flowmeter was fabricated in order to protect from the extremely hot fluid. Its structure is optimized by a finite element method to effectively stop heat flowing along a waveguide. Various materials such as Cu, Al, SUS were examined as a multi-plate radiation shield to enhance the performance of piezoelectric ultrasonic flowmeter. The SUS was evaluated as the most effective material to enhance the performance of piezoelectric ultrasonic flowmeter. As the number of plates of the radiation shield increased, the temperature at piezoelectric transducer away from the hot fluid was constantly decreased with a ratio of 3.12$^{\circ}C$ per the plate number.

And we consider the optimum position of optical waveguide to electrodes for decreasing the driving voltage. The calculated driving-voltage, characteristic impedance and microwave effective index at $1.3{\mu}{\textrm{m}}$ optical wavelength are 18 V.cm, $48.13{\Omega}$ and 2.168, respectively.

  • Ultrasound has been widely used in various industrial fields. One of challenging application areas is cooling microelectronics. Ultrasonic cooling systems can work with air, argon (Ar) and nitrogen (N2) instead of conventional refrigerant such as freon gas, which can cause global warming. Furthermore, ultrasonic systems do not have moving parts, thus high durability can be obtained. So it is necessary to develop ultrasonic cooling systems due to environmental issues and durability points. In this paper, the design and fabrication processes are explained. When designing the system, a feasibility test was performed with a prototype cooler. Based on the result, finite element analysis with ANSYS software was performed. The predicted anti-resonance frequency for a piezoelectric actuator was 34.8 kHz, which was in good agreement with the experimental result of 34.6 kHz with 0.6% error. In addition, the predicted anti-resonance frequency for the ultrasonic waveguide was 39.4 kHz, which also agreed well with the experimental value of 39.8 kHz with 1.0% error. Based on these results, the developed ultrasonic waveguide might be applicable in microchip cooling.

  • High-power ultrasonic promotes a chemical reaction by its own energy, thus it has been used for sonochemistry applications. For example, it has been mostly used for mixing, reaction catalyst, dispersion and disintegration. High-power ultrasonic transducer is made with structure based on a Bolt-clamped Langevin type Transducer (BLT), But it has difficulty in the development because degradation of piezoelectric ceramic by the heat generation of BLT. In this study, for a development of the transducer of 25 kHz and 1000 W used in sonochemistry and industrial cleaning, BLT with a hole in its center and tubular type waveguide of the transducer were designed based on finite element method (FEM). The transducer was fabricated based on the design parameter, and the impedance characteristics are measured experimentally and compared with the numerical results.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the electromagnetic interference of a heterogeneous power bus where electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) cells are irregularly arranged. To mitigate electrical-noise coupling between high-speed circuits, the EBG structure is placed between parallel plate waveguide (PPW)-based power buses on which the noise source and victim circuits are mounted. We examine a noise suppression characteristic of the heterogeneous power bus in terms of scattering parameters. The characteristics of the dispersion and scattering parameters are compared in the sensitivity analysis of the EBG structure. Electric field distributions at significant frequencies are thoroughly examined using electromagnetic simulation based on a finite element method (FEM). The noise suppression characteristics of the heterogeneous power bus are demonstrated experimentally. The heterogeneous power bus achieves significant reduction of electrical-noise coupling compared to the homogeneous power buses that are adopted in conventional high-speed circuit design. In addition, the measurements show good agreement with the FEM simulation results.
