The reliable operation of a swing check valve in the main feed water system of a power plant is most essential for successful shout-down process. A failure to close the valve at proper time often leads to the instability of the main feed water system, or even to an emergency stop of the power plant. In reality it is a very difficult task to monitor the behavior of a swing check valve. Furthermore it is impossible to see the motion of the valve. In this work two measurements were carried out simultaneously to determine the precise valve closure time. The dynamic pressure measurements were made at the inlet and outlet regions of the swing check valve. The transient vibration of the valve housing in the direction of water flow was also measured, which enabled the measurement of the transient vibration of the valve housing near valve closure. By comparing the results produced from these measurements the precise valve closure time could be determined. By carrying out order tracking technique using the dynamic pressure signals and pump rpm signal, the complicated dynamic problems inside the main feed water system can be more easily dealt with. This measurement scheme might be implemented in a power plant on a real-time basis without much difficulty. If this could be implemented, valuable information essential for shut-down operations can readily be passed on to the main control room. The feasibility of this implementation was demonstrated by this experimental work.
A kind of three-way check valve, so called hydraulic calve was proposed for the substitute of the density lock of passive reactor such as SPWR (System-Integrated Pressurized Water Reactor). The function of the valve are the separation of the borated water from main coolant loop for normal operation and the insurge of the water into the loop for shutdown and the removal of the decay power when the main coolant flow rate is not enough. To verify the operability and the characteristics of the valve, experimental works were executed with 1/3 scale model calve. Also a diffuser model was proposed for the theoretical analysis of the valve.
This study conducts the flow analysis on the basis of the impeller RPM of water metering valve. The software used for the flow analysis is STAR-CCM+. In terms of the structure of the metering valve, it has an impeller installed inside, and a metering chamber has inlet and outlet holes. The flow analysis on the water metering valve drew the following conclusions: Regarding the flow field in the valve, the impeller had the highest velocity distribution, and complex flow field was generated in the metering chamber. In particular, since the path between the inlet and outlet holes in the metering chamber and the valve body was narrow, there was a section that had flow field interference. The flow rate and flow coefficient distribution according to the impeller RPM were on the linear increase. Given that, it showed the feature of the valve used for water metering on the basis of the impeller RPM.
The leakage in the water distribution system means both the loss of money and water resource. To minimize the leakage, we introduced the pressure control method using the pressure reducing valve and pump schedule. For the pressure control, the total leakage is needed to divide into each node. In this study, EPANET 2.0 was used to simulate the water networks in two selected blocks after the total leakage was distributed with each node by four ways. The leakage was allocated into each node as water measured by meter, water pressure, water faucets and Lpcd and simulated by EPANET 2.0. Regardless of the leakage distribution ways, there was no significant difference between the measured water and the estimated water pressure. Thus, the leakage distribution way using water pressures estimated by simulation could be recommended. The scenarios controlling the pressure reducing valve and pump were made in two blocks(A and B). $86,713m^3/year$ leakage in the A block and $11,442m^3/year$ in the B block could be reduced as controlling the pressure reducing valve and pump schedule. It was shown that the fifty million won a year can be saved in the A block and 6.8 million won in the B block.
The reduction of leakage is a major issue of the South Korea water industry. The inclusion of pressure dependent leakage terms in network analysis allows the application of optimization techniques to identify the most effective means of reducing water leakage in distribution networks. This paper proposes a method to find optimal setting and location of control valve for reducing leakage efficiently. The proposed search method differs from previous methods for addressing optimal valve location problem and improves the GA simulation time with guaranteeing for getting the global optimal solution. The strength of this method has been demonstrated by means of case studies. This allows the procedure of optimization to be more robust and computational efficient.
This study conducts the flow analysis on the basis of the impeller RPM of water measuring valve and differential pressure at valve inlet and outlet. The software used for the flow analysis is STAR-CCM+. In terms of the structure of the measuring valve, it has an impeller installed inside, and a metering chamber has inlet and outlet holes. The flow analysis on the water measuring valve drew the following conclusions: The flow rate and flow coefficient distribution according to the impeller RPM and differential pressure were on the linear increase. Regarding the flow field in the valve, the increased differential pressure had the highest velocity distribution, and complex flow field was generated in the measuring chamber. In particular, since the path between the inlet and outlet holes in the measuring chamber and the valve body was narrow, there was a section that had flow field interference. Given that, it showed the feature of the valve used for water measuring on the basis of the impeller RPM.
An experimental investigation has been carried out in order to evaluate characteristics of wetted-type multi-path ultrasonic flowmeters. The multi-path ultrasonic flowmeters were installed at various entrance and exit locations for several cases of pipe fitting(straight, $90^{\circ}$ double elbow) and valve(gate valve, butterfly valve). We measured the flow-rate at each location. The measurement data of test flowmeter were compared with the measured data of reference flowmeter. The uncertainties of reference flowmeter and test flowmeter are 0.3 %, 0.4 %, respectively. The results demonstrate the effects of flowmeter location as well as the measurement errors in flow rate. The distance between the flow disturbance factor and a flowmeter was an important element of the test.
Currently, the K-Water uses various valves that can be remotely controlled for optimal water management. Valve system fault can be classified into rotor defects, stator defects, bearing defects, and gear defects of induction motors. If the valve cannot be operated due to a gear fault, the water management operation can be greatly affected. For effective water management, there is an urgent need for preemptive repairs to determine whether gear is damaged through failure prediction diagnosis.. Recently, deep learning algorithms are being applied for valve failure diagnosis. However, the method currently applied has a disadvantage of attaching a vibration sensor to the valve. In this paper, propose a new algorithm to determine whether a fault exists using a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the voltage and current information of the valve without additional sensor mounting. In particular, a normalized Lisasjous diagram was used to maximize the fault classification performance in the CNN-based diagnostic system.
Several factors, including peak dp/dt of the ventricular pressure and maximum closing velocity of leaflet have been studied as indices of the cavitation threshold. In the present study, just before closing velocity of the leaflet has been studied as indices of the cavitation threshold, and cavitation erosion on the surface of a mechanical valve was examined by focusing on squeeze flow and the water hammer phenomenon during the closing period of the valve. A simple solenoid-actuated test device that can directly control the valve closing velocity was developed, and opening-closing tests of 3,000 and 40,000 cycles were performed at various closing velocities. There was a closing velocity threshold to occur erosion pitting of valve surface, and its value was about 0.4 m/s in this study. Cavitation-induced erosion pits were observed only in regions where squeeze flow occurred immediately before valve closure On the other hand, the number of the pits was found to be closely related to an area of water hammer-induced pressure wave below the critical pressure defined by water vapor pressure. Therefore, it was concluded that cavitation is initiated and augmented by the two pressure drops due to squeeze flow and water hammer phenomenon, respectively.
This study was to investigate characteristics for the pressure wave propagation and the maximum pressure near a rapid closure valve which was installed the end of multi piping network. The multi piping network consists of one inlet and three outlet with straight pipes. The diameter of the pipes including the valve was 100 mm, 80 mm, 80 mm respectively. The valve was rapidly closed with the instantaneous time which was 0.023s in the level for the water hammer. For the simulation, the influence of the pipe thickness and deformation due to pressure-wave-propagation was not considered. CFD was conducted under the following condition : the initial pressure was 1bar in the inlet and the mass flow rate was 7.83 kg/s in the outlet(the velocity in the pipe with 100 mm diameter was 1 m/s). As the valve have conditions that were status with and without fluid flow in the pipe after valve closing, the maximum pressure change and the frequency analysis were examined. As the results, the case that was status with fluid flow appeared the higher maximum pressure than another's, the maximum frequency band was about 10 ~ 11 Hz.
