  • Arc phenomena occur in the air, must be more diverse than vacuum and SF6. An air arc interruption method has been used in low rated voltage circuit breakers such as ACB, MCCB and MCB. Most of them have the arc chamber composed of arc chutes and lateral walls that made of many kinds of materials. Therefore, the criterion of material selection is necessary for breaking capacity improvement. So, we selected some contact and lateral wall materials, and carried out short circuit tests. Especially, some parameters of arc plasma properties were very different each polymeric wall material.

  • Unstable sustain discharges can occur at the bottom cells of the panel at high temperature. To solve this phenomenon, the wall charge variation during an address period was investigated. A test panel of 7.5 inch XGA level was used and one green cell was measured. In order to realize operating condition equal to that of the bottom cells of 50 inch panel, the addressing stress pulses are applied. It seems that the resultant wall charge loss during address period increased with increase of temperature as well as the addressing stress pulse voltage. Therefore it results in unstable discharge during sustain period.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new method to control the length of carbon nanotube using electrochemical etching. We made a nano probe that was composed of the tungsten tip and multi-wall carbon nanotube. The nano probe was placed on the nano stage and the carbon nanotube on the nano probe was etched in the electrolyte solution with the applied voltage. The overall procedures were done under optical microscope and can be monitored. We can obtain a nano probe with proper length through this procedure.

  • Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) is attractive for EAP actuator due to its merit in terms of light weight, dry condition, large displacement output, low actuation voltage and low power consumption. The EAPap is based on cellulose paper, and is shown to involve primarily transport of ions in response to an external electric field. This actuating mechanism is similar to conductive polymer based actuators. For performance improvement of EAPap, hybrid actuators are tried. The actuators based on cellulose paper attached conducting polypyrrole, polyaniline and single wall carbon nanotube/polyaniline(emeraldine base) have been achieved by Electro chemical deposition and mechanical deposition of the polymers onto cellulose paper.

  • For a mesa-isolated small geometry SOI MOSFET, the potentials in the silicon film, front, back, and side-wall oxide layers can be derived three-dimensionally. Using Taylor's series expansions of the trigonometric functions, the derived potentials are written in terms of the natural length that can be determined by using the derived formula. From the derived 3-D potentials, the minimum values of the front and the back surface potentials are derived and used to obtain the closed-form expressions for the front and back gate threshold voltages as functions of various device parameters and applied bias voltages. Obtained results can be found to explain the drain-induced threshold voltage roll-off and the narrow width effect of a fully depleted small geometry SOI MOSFET in a unified manner.

  • Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) with pores of various diameter, density, and thickness values was obtained through control of the anodization parameters including voltage, temperature, pore widening time, anodization time, etc. The pore diameter was controlled by a pore widening in an etchant, and alumina templates having stepped nano-channels were fabricated by repetition of anodization and pore widening processes. Stepped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were then grown on the stepped AAO templates by pyrolysis of acetylene without using the catalyst. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images revealed that CNTs have a multi-wall structure made of graphite flakes of several nm sizes. The current-voltage characteristic of the sloped and linear CNTs were also examined.

  • Modified pulse waveforms were applied to an AC plasma display panel with an auxiliary electrode in order to improve the operation voltage margin. Reciprocal sustain pulse waveforms and modified auxiliary pulse waveforms were applied to the sustain and auxiliary electrode, respectively. During the sustain period, the influence of the address electrode on the luminous efficacy of long-coplanar gap discharges was mitigated by application of reciprocal sustain pulse waveforms. Modified auxiliary pulse waveforms maintained the high efficacy obtained from the AC PDP with an auxiliary electrode. The proposed reciprocal sustain and modified auxiliary pulses waveforms can induce stable discharges in long-coplanar gap discharges and can control wall charges with a wider auxiliary pulse voltage margin, thereby enhancing the luminous efficacy of the AC PDP with an auxiliary electrode.

  • The relationship between strain and applied potential was derived for composite actuators consisting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conductive polymers (CPs). During deriving the relationship, an electrochemical ionic approach is utilized to formulate the electromechanical actuation of the composite film actuator. The results show that the well-aligned SWNTs composite actuator can give good actuation responses and high actuating forces available. The actuation is found to be affected by both SWNTs and CPs components and the actuation of SWNTs component has two kinds of influences on that of the CPs component: reinforcement at the positive voltage and abatement at the negative voltage. CNT/EAP was fabricated successfully using the chemical polymerization method.

  • In many semi-empirical analyses of flow boiling heat transfer, an annular flow is often assumed as a model flow and the local liquid film thickness is a key parameter in the analysis. This work considers a simple electrical conductance technique to estimate the local liquid film thickness in two-phase annular flows. In this approach, many electrodes are mounted flush with the inner wall of the pipe. Voltage differences between two neighboring electrodes for concentric annular flows with various liquid film thicknesses are obtained before the main experiments and logged in a look-up table. For an actual application in the annual flow, voltage differences of neighboring electrodes are measured and then corresponding local film thicknesses are determined by the interpolation of the look-up table. Even though the proposed technique is quite simple and straightforward, the numerical and static phantom experiments support its usefulness.

  • We propose a new address-while-display (AWD) driving method to obtain a high contrast ratio and a wide driving margin which is composed of a short ramp reset period, a sustain period and an address period as the basic unit. The short ramp reset (SRR) pulse made it possible to assure the wide operating voltage margin and minimize the background luminance by redistributing the wall charges between address and scan electrode. As a result, a high dark room contrast ratio of 10000 to 1 could be obtained with a wide operating voltage margin of 40V for stable address.
