  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of $\beta$-1,3 glucan on growth, hematological and body composition in juvenile korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli fed the white fish meal based diets for 6 weeks. Four experimental diets were formulated to contain control (without supplementation of glucan), 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.5% (this diet was fed to fish daily, bi-weekly as three different dietary treatments) $\beta$-1,3 glucan per kg diet (Control, $D_{0.05}$, $D_{0.1}$, $D_{0.5}$, $B_{0.05}$, $B_{0.1}$, $B_{0.5}$). Fish averaging $4.0\pm0.1g$ (mean$\pm$SD) were randomly distributed in each aquarium as triplicate groups of 23 fish. Weight gain (WG, %) and specific growth rate (SGR, %) of fish fed $D_{0.5}$ diet were significantly lower than those of fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). Feed efficiency (FE) of fish fed $B_{0.05}$ diet was significantly higher than those of fish fed $D_{0.1}$, $D_{0.5}$, $B_{0.1}$ and $B_{0.5}$ diets (P<0.05). Protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed $B_{0.05}$ diet was significantly higher than those of fish fed $D_{0.1}$ and $D_{0.5}$ diets (P<0.05). According to the results, the supplementation of 0.05% $\beta$-1,3 glucan daily and/or biweekly is optimum in juvenile Korean rockfish.

  • This study determined the proper inclusion levels of squid liver powder (SLP) - soy protein concentrate (SPC) premix as a fish meal (FM) substitute in the diet for juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). All the experimental diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous (50% crude protein) and isocaloric (17.1 kJ energy $g^{-1}$ diet). Five diets were formulated with SLP-(SPC) replacing 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of the FM (SLP $(SPC)_0$, SLP $(SPC)_25$, SLP $(SPC)_50$, SLP $(SPC)_75$, and SLP $(SPC)_100$, respectively). Triplicate groups of 12 fish averaging $5.56{\pm}0.10\;g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were fed one of the five experimental diets for 7 weeks. The weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed efficiency (FE), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_0$ were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_50$, SLP $(SPC)_75$ and SLP $(SPC)_100$, while those of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_0$ and SLP $(SPC)_25$ were similar. The whole-body crude protein content of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_0$ was significantly (P<0.05) lower than that of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_50$, SLP $(SPC)_75$, and SLP$(SPC)_100$, while those of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_0$ and SLP $(SPC)_25$ were similar. The whole-body crude lipid of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_0$ was significantly (P<0.05) lower than that of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_50$ and SLP $(SPC)_75$, while those of fish fed SLP $(SPC)_0$, SLP $(SPC)_25$ and SLP $(SPC)_100$ were similar. Based on the fish growth performance results obtained from this study, the SLP (SPC) premix can substitute up to 25% of the FM in the diets of juvenile olive flounder.

  • In this review, the terminology that is used to describe ileal amino acid (AA) digestibilities in piglet feed ingredients is defined. If one accepts that the determination of AA digestibilities should be based on the ileal analysis method, one should consider that ileal digesta contains variable amounts of endogenous crude protein (CP), which originates mainly from digestive secretions, sloughedoff epithelial cells and mucins. The ileal endogenous CP and AA losses are separated into basal ileal endogenous CP and AA losses ($IAAL_{B}$), which are not influenced by the feed ingredient composition, and specific ileal endogenous CP and AA losses ($IAAL_{S}$), which are induced by feed ingredient characteristics such as level and type of fiber and anti-nutritional factors (ANF). Depending how ileal endogenous CP and AA losses are considered in the measurement of CP and AA digestibilities, digestibility values are expressed as apparent (AID), standardized (SID), or true (TID) ileal digestibilities of CP and AA. The main concern associated with the use of AID values in diet formulation for pigs is that they are not additive in mixtures of feed ingredients. Consequently, the concept of standardized ileal CP and AA digestibilities was introduced by correcting AID values for basal ileal endogenous CP and AA losses ($IAAL_{B}$). The correction for both $IAAL_{B}$ and $IAAL_{S}$ yields TID values, however, routine procedures to measure $IAAL_{S}$ are not yet available. In principle, SID values should be preferred, because they represent the fundamental properties of the feed ingredient. There exist only few reports on SID of CP and AA in feedstuffs frequently used in piglet nutrition. These include soybeans (SB), soybean meal (SBM), soy proteins (SP), soy protein concentrate (SPC), soy protein isolate (SPI), corn gluten (CG), wheat gluten (WG), pea protein (PeaP), potato protein (PotP), fish meal (FM) and whey proteins (WP), but the results obtained are inconsistent. Differences in SID values within feed ingredients may, at least in part, be attributed to different processing conditions or inherent differences of the assay feed ingredients. Moreover, there is some evidence that the determination of SID values and $IAAL_{B}$ in piglets may be confounded by the dietary CP level of the assay diet, age and (or) body weight (BW), the level of feed intake or the methodological approach used to determine $IAAL_{B}$.

  • The shrimp fishery for Penaeus japonicus on the Koje-Do coast commences in May and continues to October. The best catches are made twice a year, namely June and September. Modal carapace length for the female is $51\~55\;mm$ in May, $51\~60\;mm$ in June occupying about 80 percent of the total catch. There is conspicuous mode in July and $46\~50\;mm$ in August. Modal carapace length for the male is $41\~45\;mm$ in May, $46\~50\;mm$ in June, $41\~45\;mm$ in July and August. The stock of p. japonicus can be divided into two groups, namely, spring and fall groups. Among samples of p. japonicus during the period from May through August the sex ratio consisted of about 33 percent females and 67 percent males, showing wide departure from a 1:1 ratio. The relationships between carapace length ($\iota$), body length (L) and body weight (W) are expressed by the following formulae : $$L=2.9418{\iota}+2.0166$$, $$W:1.449{\iota}^{2.2858}$$ (Mayssample) $$L=2.5551{\iota}+4.2986$$, $$W=1.528{\iota}^{2.2595}$$ (June sample) $$L=2.6738{\iota}+3.4037$$, $$W=1.341{\iota}^{2.3598}$$ (July sample) The relatlonship between carapace length ($\iota$) and ovary weight (W) is shown as follows: $W=2.695\times10^{-3}\iota^{4.2973}$ for May, June and July Samples.

  • Two feeding trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of experimental extruded pellets (EEPs) and commercial EPs (CEPs) on Far Eastern catfish $Silurus$ $asotus$ in pilot- (experiment I) and commercial-scale (experiment II) tanks. Four diets were prepared: three EEPs (EEP1, EEP2 and EEP3) that contained different amounts of tuna fish meal, soybean meal, and squid liver oil, and one CEP diet. In experiment I, three replicate groups of juveniles were fed one of the four EPs in pilot-scale tanks for 19 weeks. The weight gains (WGs) of fish fed EEP1 and CEP were significantly higher than those of fish fed EEP2 or EEP3. The highest feed efficiency (FE) was observed in fish fed the CEP diet ($P$<0.05), and the FE of fish fed EEP1 and EEP3 were significantly higher than that with EEP2 ($P$<0.05). In experiment II, juveniles were fed one of four EPs in commercial-scale tanks for 19 weeks. WG and FE values of fish fed EEP1 and CEP were higher than those of fish fed EEP2 and EEP3. The results of this study indicate that the dietary formulation used in EEP1 could be used as a practical feed for Far Eastern catfish.

  • This experiment was conducted to develop an experimental model and a semipurified diet for vitamin C requirement study in juvenile Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. Prior to the start of the feeding trial, fish were fed the control diet for four weeks to deplete their body reserves of vitamin C, Then fish were divided into six groups and given one of the laboratory developed semipurified diets supplementing either 0 (control), 25, 50, 75, 150, o. 1500 mg L-ascorhic acid (AA)/kg diet for eight weeks. Fish fed control diet had lower hematocrit than did fish from groups fed the other diets (P<0.05). Also these fish had significantly lower percent weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and muscle AA than did fish fed diets containing 150 and 1500 mg AA/kg diet (P<0.05). Diet analysis of vitamin C showed that the control diet had 39,7 mg AA/kg diet. Therefore, these fingings suggest that the experimental model and the semipurified diet can be useful for vitamin C requirement study, and the dietary vitamin C requirement is greater than 40 mg AA/kg diet, but 150 mg AA/kg diet is adequate for the maximum growth in juvenile Korean rockfish.

  • The objective of this research was to study the effect of astaxanthin (AST) on growth performance and antioxidant capacity in golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) both in vivo and in vitro. In the in vivo study, two diets were formulated with or without astaxanthin supplementation (D1 and D2; 0 and 200 mg/kg) to feed fish for 6 weeks. In the in vitro study, cells from hepatopancreas of golden pompano were isolated and four treatments with or without astaxanthin and $H_2O_2$ supplementation were applied (control group: without both astaxanthin and $H_2O_2$ treated; $H_2O_2$ group: just with $H_2O_2$ treated; $H_2O_2$ + AST group: with both astaxanthin and $H_2O_2$treated; AST group: just with AST treated). Results of the in vivo study showed that weight gain (WG) and special growth rate (SGR) significantly increased with astaxanthin supplemented (P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) of fish fed D2 diet was significantly lower than that of fish fed D1 diet (P < 0.05). Hepatic total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and the reduced glutathione (GSH) of golden pompano fed D2 diet were significant higher than those of fish fed D1 diet (P < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly declined as astaxanthin was supplemented (P < 0.05). Results of the in vitro study showed that the cell viability of $H_2O_2$ group was 52.37% compared to the control group, and it was significantly elevated to 84.18% by astaxanthin supplementation ($H_2O_2$ + AST group) (P < 0.05). The total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and the reduced glutathione (GSH) of cell were significant decreased by oxidative stress from $H_2O_2$ (P < 0.05), but it could be raised by astaxanthin supplementation ($H_2O_2$ vs $H_2O_2$ + AST), and the malondialdehyde (MDA) was significant higher in $H_2O_2$ group (P < 0.05) and astaxanthin supplementation could alleviate the cells from lipid peroxidation injury. In conclusion, dietary astaxanthin supplementation can improve the growth performance of golden pompano. Moreover, astaxanthin can improve the golden pompano hepatic antioxidant capacity both in vivo and in vitro study by eliminating the reactive oxygen species.

  • Thirteen groups, each consisting of 25 juveniles (0.64 g) of the Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli were reared in aquaria after period of one week conditioning. Each group was fed with one of the 13 diets at the rate of 7~10% body weight (on a dry-matter basis) 2 times a day for 6 weeks. Each diet was supplemented with one of the following amino acids at 3g/kg diet: Alanine (Ala), Arginine (Arg), Glycine(Gly), Glutamate (Glu), Histidine (His), Isoleusine(Ile), Lysine (Lys), Methionine (Met), Phenylalanine (Phe), Proline (Pro), Threonine (Thr), Tryptophan (Trp) or Valine (Val). Groups fed with Pro, Thr, Met or Gly-supplemented diet showed significantly (p<0.05) higher weight gain and faster specific growth rate than the groups fed on other diets, while those fed Pro, Thr, Met or Gly were not significantly different each other(P>0.05). Feed efficiency (FE) of fish fed Pro was significantly higher than those fed the other diets except that fed Thr (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between FE of fish fed Pro and Thr, and among FE of fish fed Thr, Met and Gly (P>0.05). The requirement of rockfish is higher for Met and Thr. Extra Pro and/or Gly may also stimulate biosynthesis of the nucleic acids (IMP, GMP) which are known as the feed stimulant in fish.

  • The Instant Messenger(IM) is the most popular personal communication tool today. IM is a tool that can substitute E-mail for a person, and can secure the user for a company. Further, it is claimed as it has a limitless potential. However, there has been several reports on security issues. It has known that the transmitting message is not secured for the attacks, and hacking tools has been developed. In addition, several reports has been made regards to the vulnerability. In other words, anyone can been through and manipulate the messages that are sent or received via IM. This is a barrier for the IM to be developed as a corporate's strategic tool, and furthermore, it will create serious personal privacy issue. IETF IMPP Working Group is preparing a standard mutual relationship between IM. However, it is complicated due to the American On-Lines's absence, whom has ensured the most number of IM users. There was a discussion only about the form of the transmitting data, but it is insufficient state to discuss the security service for general. In this paper, I design and implement the Secure Instant Messaging System, to solve the IM's vulnerability and the security issue presented above.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of extruded pellet (EP) diets, as compared to a raw fish moist pellet (MP) diet for olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, grown in commercial-scale aquaculture for 1 year. Four diets with duplication per diet were formulated for this experiment: two experimental EP diets (EP1 and EP2), one commercial EP diet (CEP), and a raw fish MP diet (MP). The MP diet consisted of 80% frozen horse mackerel and 20% commercial binder meal. Fish weighing $30.1{\pm}0.1 g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were distributed randomly to each aquarium as a group of 2,600 fish. Weight gain (WG) and feed efficiency ratio (FER) of fish fed EP2 and MP were higher (P<0.05) than those of fish fed CEP, while those of fish fed EP1 did not differ (P>0.05) from those fed EP2 and MP. However, fish fed the MP diet had a higher survival rate than fish fed the other diets. Fish fed EP2 had higher serum, phospholipids and total protein levels, and lower levels of serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and total cholesterol than fish fed MP (P<0.05). Dorsal muscle and liver proteins and lipid of fish fed EP1 were higher (P<0.05) than those of fish fed CEP, while those of fish fed EP1 and MP did not differ from those of fish fed EP2 (P>0.05). These results strongly suggest that EP1 could be developed to replace MP for grow-out stage production of olive flounder without adverse effects on growth performance.
