  • To improve the fuel consumption and exhaust emission for gasoline engines, GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) system was spotlighted to solve above requirements. Thus, many researchers have been studied to investigate the spray characteristics and the mixture formation of GDI injector. In this study, we tried to study the spray characteristics of a gasoline direct injector by using entropy analysis and PlV methods. The entropy analysis is based on the concept of statistical entropy, and it identifies the degree of homogeneity in the fuel concentration. The PlV method was adopted to determine the fluid dynamics information at the spray. From the applied results on a direct injection gasoline spray, we could find that the direct diffusion phenomena was a dominant factor in the formation of a homogeneous mixture at downstream of GDI spray especially under vaporizing ambient conditions, and mixing phenomena was also progressed by momentum exchange with induced air. In addition, the correlation between entropy and vorticity strength enabled to find their relation.

In order to analyze aerodynamic performance of wind turbine WINFAS program is used, which is based on VLM(Vortex Lattice Method) and CVC(Constant vorticity contour) Free wake model. Some problems of CVC vortex filament method are investigated arid to improve these problems vortex ring wake are introduced in behalf of CVC vortex filament. The prediction results using the vortex lattice wake are compared to experimental data.

  • An objective method for the generation of velocity streamfunction is presented for dealing with discretely sampled oceauc data. The method treats a Poisson equation (forced by vorticity) derived from Helmholtz theorem In which streamfunction is obtained by isolating the non-divergent part of the two-dimensional flow field. With a mixed boundary condition and vorticity field estimated from observed field, the method Is Implemented over the Texas-Louisiana show based on the current meter data of the Texas-Louisiana Shelf Circulation and Transport Processes Study (LATEX) measured at 31 moorings for 32 months (April 1992 - November 1994). The resulting streamfunction pattern is quote consistent with observations. The streamfunction field by this method presents an opportunity to initiauze and to verier computer models for local forecasts of enoronmental flow conditions for ell spill, nutrient and plankton transports as well as opportuuty to understand shelf-wlde low-frequency currents.

  • In the field of computer graphics, Navier-Stokes equations would be used for realistic simulations of smokes and currents. However, implementations derived from these equations are hard to achieve for real-time simulations, mainly due to its massive and complex calculations. Thus, there have been various attempts to approximate these equations for real-time simulation of smokes and others. When the advection terms of the equations are approximated by the Semi-Lagrange methods, the fluid density can be rapidly reduced and small-scale vorticity phenomena are easy to be missed, mainly due to the numerical losses over time. In this paper, we propose an improved numerical method to approximately calculate the advection terms, and thus eliminate these problems. To calculate the advection terms, our method starts to set critical regions around the target grid points. Then, among the grid points in a specific critical region, we search for a grid point which will be advected to the target grid point, and use the velocity of this grid point as its advection vector. This method would reduce the numerical losses in the calculation of densities and vorticity phenomena, and finally can implement more realistic smoke simulations. We also improve the overall efficiency of vector calculations and related operations through GPU-based implementation techniques, and thus finally achieve the real-time simulation.

  • In this study, the Norbury-Fraenkel family of vortex rings is analyzed using a contour dynamics method for the stream function, which significantly reduces the numerical burden in the calculation. The stream function is formulated as the integral along the contour of the vorticity core. The integration over the logarithmic-singular segment is evaluated analytically, and the positions of the nodal points of the contour are calculated directly. The shapes of the cores and the dividing stream surfaces are found based on the mean core radius. Compared with other studies, the proposed method is verified and found to be more efficient.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient technique for improving the grid based fluid simulation by sub-grid visuals. The detailed turbulency generated efficiently by Vortex Particle Method are blended with the flow fields coming from the traditional incompressible Navier-Stokes solver. The algorithm enables large- and small- scale detail to be edited separately.

  • The present study is aimed to reveal macroscopic aerodynamic characteristics of two-dimensional rectangular prisms with three aspect ratios(D/H=1, 2 and 3) and six angles of attack($0^{circ}, 10^{circ}, 13.5^{circ}, 20^{circ}, 30^{circ} and 45^{\circ}$). The Reynolds number is fixed as $1\times10^4$. The SOLA-based revised finite difference method for the conservation form on irregular grid was adopted as a new numerical method. Instantaneous flow patterns at $45^{\circ}$ in case of D/H=2 and D/H=3 show larger asymmetric wake development which is closely related to the sharp decrease of drag coefficients at higher angles of attack range. Vorticity propagation into enlarged wake region is conjectured to be responsible for this phenomenon. The Strouhal number is found to be sensitive to the angle of attack at higher aspect ratios(D/H=2 and 3).

  • The velocity and pressure fields of a ship's Weis-Fogh type propulsion mechanism are studied in this paper using an advanced vortex method. The wing (NACA0010 airfoil) and channel are approximated by source and vortex panels. and free vortices are introduced away from the body surfaces. The viscous diffusion of fluid is represented using the core-spreading model to the discrete vortices. The velocity is calculated on the basis of the generalized Biot-Savart law and the pressure field is calculated from an integral, based on the instantaneous velocity and vorticity distributions in the flow field. Two-dimensional unsteady viscous flow calculations of this propulsion mechanism are shown. and the calculated results agree qualitatively with the measured thrust and drag due to un-modeled large fluctuations in the measured data.

  • The transient incompressible flow behind the widely-spaced co-axial jet is numerically simulated using the random vortex method(RVM). This numerical approach is based on the Lagrangian approach for the vorticity formulation of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations, utilizing vortex elements to account for the convection and diffusion processes. The effects of the mass flow rate of an annular air jet and a central fuel jet on the co-axial jet flow dynamics is investigated. To validate the present procedure, the numerical results are compared with the available experimental data the present procedure, the numerical results are compared with the available experimental data in terms of the centerline and off-centerline profiles of the mean axial velocity. Discrepancies between the RVM results and the measurements are discussed in detail.

  • Vent mixer can provide main flow directly into a recirculation region downstream of the mixer to enhance fuel-air mixing efficiency. Based on experimental results of three-dimensional velocity, vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy obtained by a stereoscopic PIV method, the performance of the vent mixer was compared with that of the step mixer which was used as a basic model. Thick shear layers of the vent mixer induced the increase of the penetration height. The turbulent kinetic energy mainly distributed along a boundary layer between the main flow and the jet plume. This turbulent field activates mass transfer in a mixing region, leading to the mixing enhancement.
