STATCOM을 사용한 다기 전력 계통의 버스 전압 조절을 위한 모델 기반 PID 제어기 설계 (Innovative Model-Based PID Control Design for Bus Voltage Regulation with STATCOM in Multi-Machine Power Systems)

  • The complexity and severe nonlinearity of multi-machine power systems make it difficult to design a control input for voltage regulation using modern control theory. This paper presents a model-based PID control scheme for the regulation of the bus voltage to a desired value. To this end, a fourth-order linear system is constructed using input and output data obtained using the TSAT (Transient Security Assessment Tool); the input is assumed to be applied to the grid through the STATCOM (STATic synchronous COMpensator) and the output from the grid is a bus voltage. On the basis of the model, it is identified as to which open-loop poles of the system make the response to a step input oscillatory. To reduce this oscillatory response effectively, a model-based PID control is designed in such a way that the oscillatory poles are no longer problematic in the closed loop. Simulation results show that the proposed PID control dampens the response effectively.

  • This paper reveals some correlations between LDC voltage control method and the output of DGS, and also presents a method for determining the amounts of real, reactive Power of DGS for proper voltage regulation of power distribution system with LDC. Proposed method has been applied to a 22.9 kV class power distribution system, and those results show that the distribution system voltage profile is improved.

  • This paper presents a SISO nonlinear controller for the power system consisting of a synchronous generator connected to an infinite bus. The proposed controller is based on input-output feedback linearization, with a modified version of the terminal voltage equation used as the output. The resulting closed-loop has no internal dynamics, and thus stability is guaranteed. The controller performance is seen to be effective through simulations.

Coordinated Control of Reactive Power between STATCOMs and Wind Farms for PCC Voltage Regulation

  • This paper proposes a coordinated control of the reactive power between the STATCOMs (static synchronous compensators) and the grid-side converters (GSC) of wind farms equipped with PMSGs (permanent-magnet synchronous generators), by which the voltage fluctuations at the PCC (point of common coupling) are mitigated in the steady state. In addition, the level of voltage sags is reduced during grid faults. To do this, the GSC and the STATCOM supply reactive power to the grid coordinately, where the GSCs are fully utilized to provide the reactive power for the grid prior to the STATCOM operation. For this, the GSC capability of delivering active and reactive power under variable wind speed conditions is analyzed in detail. In addition, the PCC voltage regulation of the power systems integrated with large wind farms are analyzed for short-term and long-term operations. With this coordinated control scheme, the low power capacity of STATCOMs can be used to achieve the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability of the wind farms during grid faults. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy has been verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results.

  • 현재의 배전계통의 전압은 변전소에서 단방향 조류를 고려하여 LCD에 의한 전압조정방법으로 ULTC 변압기의 탭을 변환하여 공급전압을 적정범위 내에서 유지되도록 운전하고 있다. 그러나 현재의 배전계통 운용은 소용량에서 대규모 용량에 이르기까지 다양한 용량의 PV 시스템이 배전계통에 연계되어 운전되는 것을 반영하지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 때문에 다수의 PV 시스템이 계통에 연계되어 양방향 조류가 발생하고 이로 인해 연계점의 전압변동이 발생하여도 이를 효과적으로 조정하지 못하여 계통의 전압이 적정범위 내에서 운용되지 못하는 경우가 발생할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 다수 PV 시스템의 연계에 따른 양방향 조류의 발생을 고려하고 연계점의 전압변동에 따른 계통의 전압을 효과적으로 제어할 수 있도록 실시간 감시가 이루어지는 PV 시스템의 특징을 이용하고 기존의 LDC 전압조정방법을 개선하여 PV 시스템 연계 시에도 변전소에서 계통의 전압을 적정범위 내에서 조정할 수 있는 개선된 전압조정방법을 제안하였다.

DSP-Based Digital Controller for Multi-Phase Synchronous Buck Converters

  • This paper represents a design and implementation of a digital controller for a multi-phase synchronous buck converter (SBC) using a digital signal processor (DSP). The multi-phase SBC has generally been used for a voltage regulation module (VRM) of a microprocessor because of its high current handling capability at a low output voltage. The VRM requires high control performance of tight output regulation, high slew rate, and load sharing capability of multiple converters. In order to achieve these requirements, the design and implementation of a digital control system for a multi-phase SBC are presented in this paper. The digital PWM generation, current sensing, and voltage and current controller using a DSP TMS320F2812 are considered. The experimental results are provided to show the validity of the implemented digital control system.

Neural Network Controller for a Permanent Magnet Generator Applied in Wind Energy Conversion System

  • In this paper a neural network controller for achieving maximum power tracking as well as output voltage regulation, for a wind energy conversion system (WECS) employing a permanent magnet synchronous generator is proposed. The permanent magnet generator (PMG) supplies a dc load via a bridge rectifier and two buck-boost converters. Adjusting the switching frequency of the first buck-boost converter achieves maximum power tracking. Adjusting the switching frequency of the second buck-boost converter allows output voltage regulation. The on-time of the switching devices of the two converters are supplied by the developed neural network (NN). The effect of sudden changes in wind speed and/ or in reference voltage on the performance of the NN controller are explored. Simulation results showed the possibility of achieving maximum power tracking and output voltage regulation simulation with the developed neural network controllers. The results proved also the fast response and robustness of the proposed control system.

  • The alternative precise method for voltage balancing and load compensation using the susceptances control of a STATCOM is discussed. With the control of STATCOM's output current, it is confirmed that the compensation susceptances can be variable. And then the STATCOM's control method about compensation susceptances for load compensation and voltage balancing/regulation is derived. Finally, the effectiveness of load compensation and voltage balancing/regulation is confirmed through computer simulation.

  • This paper presents a new switch-control approach for multiphase interleaved converters. Development of the proposed technique is based on control-signal generation for multi-unit synchronization. Current sharing among the switching cells and voltage regulation are achieved by means of a multi-loop control scheme regardless of changes in input voltage and load. System stability is ensured by single-pole compensation. This proposed technique is straightforward, reliable and inexpensive, and can be applied to any higher number of cells without difficulty.
