This study is about how differ math anxiety according to the features of brain preference. In order to solve questions, BPI test and math anxiety test were done to high school students in the second grade. The test sheets were analyzed by ANOVA and MANOVA using SPSS 14.0. The result was found out that math anxiety was high in the order of left-brain preferences, both-brain preferences, and right-brain preferences. High level of math anxiety among students with right-brain preferences seem to be influenced by the right brain which prefers emotional features. Therefore, students need to stimulate their left brain by writing and reading something a lot when they solve math questions. Also, teachers can lessen math anxiety of students by give them opportunities to solve step-by-step questions, using various visual teaching materials promoting students' reasoning ability which can help them solve questions in a systematic and analytic way.
This study analyzed the difficulties of middle school students in computer simulation of the law of large numbers through eye movement analysis. Some students did not attend to the simulation results and could not make meaningful inferences. It is observed that students keep the existing concept even though they observe the simulation results which are inconsistent with the misconceptions they have. Since probabilistic intuition influence student's thinking very strongly, it is necessary to design a task that allows students to clearly recognize the difference between their erroneous intuitions and simulation results. In addition, we could confirm through eye movements analysis that students could not make meaningful observations and inferences if too much reasoning was needed even though the simulation included a rich context. It is necessary to use visual representations such as graphs to provide immediate feedback to students, to encourage students to attend to the results in a certain intentional way to discover the underlying mathematical structure rather than simply presenting experimental data. Some students focused their attention on the visually salient feature of the experimental results and have made incorrect conclusion. The simulation should be designed so that the patterns of the experimental results that the student must discover are not visually distorted and allow the students to perform a sufficient number of simulations. Based on the results of this study, we suggested that cumulative relative frequency graph showing multiple results at the same time, and the term 'generally tends to get closer' should be used in learning of the law of large numbers. In addition, it was confirmed that eye-tracking method is a useful tool for analyzing interaction in technology-based probabilistic learning.
A lot of researches state mathematical justification is important. Specially, NCTM (2000) mentions that mathematical reasoning and proof should be taught every student from pre-primary school to 12 grades. Some of researches say elementary school students are also able to prove and justify their own solution(Lester, 1975; King, 1970, 1973; Reid, 2002). Balacheff(1987), Tall(1995), Harel & Sowder(1998, 2007), Simon & Blume(1996) categorize the level or the types of mathematical justification. We re-categorize the 4 types of mathematical justification basis on their studies; external conviction justification, empirical-inductive justification, generic justification, deductive justification. External conviction justification consists of authoritarian justification, ritual justification, non-referential symbolic justification. empirical-inductive justification consists of naive examples justification and crucial example justification. Generic justification consists of generic example and visual example. The results of this research are following. First, elementary school teachers in Korea respectively understand mathematical justification well. Second, elementary school teachers in Korea prefer deductive justification when they justify by themselves, while they prefer empirical-inductive justification when they teach students.

Ubiquitous computing technology makes an impact on the appearance of u-learning and presents an advanced direction of futuristic school education. In ubiquitous learning environments, various embedded computational devices will be pervasive and interoperable across the network for supporting the learning, so users may utilize these devices anytime anywhere. An important next step for ubiquitous learning is the introduction of context-aware learning service that employing knowledge and reasoning to understand the local context and share this information in support of intelligent learning services. However, the existing studies on design and application of ontology context model to support context-aware service in actual school environments are incomplete state. This paper, therefore, suggests a scheme of constructing ubiquitous learning space for existing school network by introducing USN to support context-aware ubiquitous learning services. This paper, also, designs an ontology based context model for ubiquitous school environments which describes context information through OWL. To determine the suitability of proposed ubiquitous learning space and ontology context model, we implement some of context-aware learning services in the ubiquitous learning environments.

Objectives: This paper aims to explain principles of gist-based health message design and discuss their implications for health promotion and public health education. Methods: After reviewing Reyna and Brainerd's Fuzzy Trace Theory(FTT), the authors explicate how to transform FTT into a practical guidance of health message design. Our explication is based upon FTT's reasoning that human intuition, rather than analysis, takes a primary role in message recall and comprehension, followed by judgment and decision making. We expect gist-based message design to be appropriate to serve such intuition. Results: Four principles of gist-based message design are offered: (1) provision of qualitative, as well as quantitative, information of gist, (2) inclusion of visual images corresponding to gist, (3) use of effective message formats to emphasize the gist (4) inclusion of relevant reasons and contextutal information. Conclusions: Gist-based message design has theoretical and practical implications for health promotion, specifically in the field of public health education, the press and governmental communication toward the public, and provider-patient communication in medical settings.

Exponentially increasing biopathway data in recent years provide us with means to elucidate the large-scale modular organization of the cell. Given the existing information on metabolic and regulatory networks, inferring biopathway information through scientific reasoning or data mining of large scale array data or proteomics data get great attention. Naturally, there is a need for a user-friendly system allowing the user to combine large and diverse pathway data sets from different resources. We built a data warehouse - BIOWAY - for analyzing and visualizing biological pathways, by integrating and customizing resources. We have collected many different types of data in regards to pathway information, including metabolic pathway data from KEGG/LIGAND, signaling pathway data from BIND, and protein information data from SWISS-PROT. In addition to providing general data retrieval mechanism, a successful user interface should provide convenient visualization mechanism since biological pathway data is difficult to conceptualize without graphical representations. Still, the visual interface in the previous systems, at best, uses static images only for the specific categorized pathways. Thus, it is difficult to cope with more complex pathways. In the BIOWAY system, all the pathway data can be displayed in computer generated graphical networks, rather than manually drawn image data. Furthermore, it is designed in such a way that all the pathway maps can be expanded or shrinked, by introducing the concept of super node. A subtle graphic layout algorithm has been applied to best display the pathway data.

This study involved an investigation of prospective elementary teachers' preconceptions and experiences of diagrams and their ability to draw diagrams in solving math word problems. A questionnaire and two math word problems were administered to prospective elementary teachers who began to taking an introductory mathematics education course. The results from the analysis of their responses to the questionnaire items indicate that prospective elementary teachers appreciate the value of diagrams as tools for problem solving and communication. In addition, prospective elementary teachers have the will not only to teach their future students how to use diagrams but also to encourage them to draw diagrams in solving math word problems. However, the results also indicates that prospective elementary teachers neither use diagrams spontaneously in their math problem solving activities nor have confidence in drawing useful diagrams. Prospective elementary teachers also manifested low scores on the questionnaire items asking whether they were taught how to draw useful diagrams or encouraged by their teachers to use diagrams in their previous learning experiences. The results from the analysis of the diagrams that prospective elementary teachers drew in solving math word problems showed that most of them had difficulty drawing diagrams that represent their reasoning and solving process.
This study investigates students' conceptions of fractions from a measurement approach while providing a technological environment designed to support students' understanding of the relationships between quantities and adjustable units. 13 third-graders participated in this study and they were involved in a series of measurement tasks through task-based interviews. The tasks were devised to investigate the relationship between units and quantity through manipulations. Screencasting videos were collected including verbal explanations and manipulations. Drawing upon the theory of semiotic mediation, students' constructed concepts during interviews were coded as mathematical words and visual mediators to identify conceptual profiles using a fine-grained analysis. Two students changed their strategies to solve the tasks were selected as a representative case of the two profiles: from guessing to recursive partitioning; from using random units to making a relation to the given unit. Dragging mathematical objects plays a critical role to mediate and formulate fraction understandings such as unitizing and partitioning. In addition, static and dynamic representations influence the development of unit concepts in measurement situations. The findings will contribute to the field's understanding of how students come to understand the concept of fraction as measure and the role of technology, which result in a theory-driven, empirically-tested set of tasks that can be used to introduce fractions as an alternative way.
Form design for information registration should consider and classify various possible cases and each user case and reflect it in the design. In this paper, I analyzed the visual and emotional factors of information design that elicit positive emotions from the user experience point of view, focusing on the birth certificate of among other public documents issued by the government. In order to derive problems and supplements from the user's overall writing experience point of view, Keller's Motivational Behavior Construction Model was used. The process of writing the birth registration form creates recognition, reasoning, relationship, establishment, achievement, expectation. In order to more actively draw an emotional point of view, it is essential to set of information and to materialize the information experience. It is hoped that this will be a good guideline in the process of presenting a new perspective on information design and improving the experience.
Objectives : This study investigated whether long-acting injectable (LAI) paliperidone is different from its oral form in terms of the effect on cognitive function in schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. Methods : We reviewed the medical records of patients in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital who were diagnosed as having schizophrenia and/or other psychotic disorders based on DSM-5 from 2016 to 2017. Seven patients were treated with oral paliperidone and 11 were treated with paliperidone palmitate. All patients underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessment, including the Korean version of the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) at their first visit or within one month of their initial treatment. MCCB was repeated within three to 12 months after the initial assessment. Results : There was no significant difference between the two groups in most cognitive domains including speed of processing, attention and vigilance, working memory, verbal learning, visual learning and reasoning and problem solving domain. However, patients treated with paliperidone palmitate showed better improvement in social cognition domain than those taking oral paliperidone. The standardized values of social cognition domain scores had significantly improved over time in patients under paliperidone palmitate, demonstrating a significant time-by-group interaction. Conclusion : Our results show that long-acting injectable paliperidone could be helpful in some aspects of improving cognitive function in schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. Further studies with other antipsychotics are necessary to generalize the results.
