Study on Fashion Illustration as Viewed from the Allegorical - Based on the theory of Craig Owens - (알레고리 관점의 패션 일러스트레이션에 관한 연구 - 크렉 오웬스의 이론을 중심으로 -)

  • The contents of this study are as follows. First, an academic understanding has been achieved by exploring the theoretical concept "allegory", and a new theoretical approached methodology has been sought. Second, an analysis-index of fashion illustration cases has been suggested based on the allegory theory of Craig Owens. Third, in order to draw the characteristics of fashion illustration as viewed from the allegorical viewpoint and find out its feasibility, the case studies has been referred and the internal significance, external significance that combines different characteristics has been extracted. In regards to this study method, literature studies and case studies has been done in parallel with each other. This study was done in the following sequence: the establishment of the study system, the drawing of the allegory-associated concepts and the discovering the characteristics of aesthetic expressions. The results of this study on the expression characteristics of fashion illustration as viewed from the allegorical viewpoint of Craig Owens are as follows. First, the borrowing of image, which is a characteristic of allegory, contains the meaning of uncertainty in the fashion illustration as it expresses the image-synthesis and forms a completely different meaning as the fixed meaning is dissolved and it is utilized as a photo-montage technique. Second, the inference of pictogram is the mixture of linguistic medium and visual medium. Fashion illustration utilizes the characters and transmits the fashion information visually and immanently. It has the characteristic of making the information into pictograms and the internal significances of mutual-text with communication function. Third, the uniqueness of location in the fashion illustration has the special nature of utilized mediums as it is used for advertising or publicizing. The fashion illustration from the viewpoint of allegory has the impermanency of existing only for a limited time and reflects the coincidence that gives the meaning of utilized location according to the season trend. Fourth, the cross-breeding is expressed as the mixture of various materials in the fashion illustration. The expressions made by the mixture of media, such as the use of computer graphic programs mixed together with various materials showed the trend of diversity and genre dissolution.

An Analysis on Humor Expression in Internet Banner Advertising (인터넷 배너광고의 유머 표현 분석)

  • As the Internet market develops and grows, the Internet advertising has emerged as a critical medium of advertisement and become important in a modern society. In addition, the Internet advertising is more fascinating and attractive than other media in terms of diversity and absorption. In the Internet banner advertising, for example, various expression methods which attract attention from users have been more than just visual advertisement, arousing curiosity and interest. Especially, humorous expressions in the Internet banner advertising have brought a new paradigm to advertising market. Therefore, this paper has investigated the patterns of humorous expressions in banner advertising and analyzed the related case studies to make a contribution to the effective production of the Internet banner advertising, which induces user awareness and selection. For this, it has been attempted to analyze humorous patterns and involvement that are found in humorous banner advertisings such as CIA Athletica, Panadol, Toy & Stok, Adidas and Lipton among the banners which have relatively high preference in Banner blogs.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of traditional art expressions in recent Chinese online games, which are now most popular in Chinese game market. Designing the MMORPG game character reflecting users' psychological preferences for aesthetic characteristic of the traditional Chinese culture allows the users to feel more visual satisfaction while they are enjoying a game. The selected characters for this analysis were chosen from the traditional myth chivalry game to utilize the traditional art expressions that are peculiar in Chinese MMORPG. The analysis was conducted within the context of an ideal character figure and operation, and social nature reflecting a personal user. This analysis suggested the representation technique reflecting traditional clothing, color, and life style, and the reconstruction of subject matter, and the development of the characteristics of ideal group character. Even though Chinese MMORPG history is short, this study will help the user understand more effectively the identity of the myth martial MMORPG game in connection with the Chinese traditional culture and art. And this study will also increase the user's satisfaction of the Chinese online-game.

  • The earlier animations aimed to express the characters realistically by making the illustrations look like moving and alive. Since then, animations have been influenced by development of media technology, men's changed mentality and evolvement of diverse social phenomena, while influencing them, too. Among them, the computer which emerged first in 1946 has sewed to more diversify the tools for realistic expressions of animations, and further, enhance the intellectual power of expression media only to expand the new visual expressions and thereby, usher in a multi-media video information environment. Moreover, this technology or computer has urged every discipline to disintegrate its conventional order for the post-modernism characterized by polysemous, diversified, obscure and sometimes, mutually contradicting elements, and as a result, animations had to find a new breakthrough in the conventional reality (cognitive and reflective reality). Thus, animations have been real enough to be perceived impromptu and emotionally, faster than the logical cognitive process beyond the simple technological barrier or the screen image processing. With such backgrounds in mind and by defining such a reality as 'sensuous reality', this study aimed to apply Gilles Deleuze's, reality of space to animation films and interpret it.

  • Analyzing the inner meaning and expression of philosophy by analyzing the composition, symbolic expression, and style of the film with high artistic perfection, which contains the spirit of the times, considers human beings through society and history, and raises awareness of life and the present generation. It will be a very meaningful and valuable study in film as art. The movie 'Rome' was cut into the rest of the public's mind by being tempered, hidden and omitted, and the color was black and white. Many aesthetic attempts can be found through symbolic images expressing the ironic message of maid's daily life as a race, capital, socially oppressed history. It can be seen that he expresses his own authorism visual language by drawing symbolic expressions through many contrasts and symbolic expressions through objects. The analysis of commercial films containing these artistic values is expected to help in the future production as a measure of the progress of art films and precedents of authorism expression techniques.

Korean Emotional Speech and Facial Expression Database for Emotional Audio-Visual Speech Generation (대화 영상 생성을 위한 한국어 감정음성 및 얼굴 표정 데이터베이스)

  • In this paper, a database is collected for extending the speech synthesis model to a model that synthesizes speech according to emotions and generating facial expressions. The database is divided into male and female data, and consists of emotional speech and facial expressions. Two professional actors of different genders speak sentences in Korean. Sentences are divided into four emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, and neutrality. Each actor plays about 3300 sentences per emotion. A total of 26468 sentences collected by filming this are not overlap and contain expression similar to the corresponding emotion. Since building a high-quality database is important for the performance of future research, the database is assessed on emotional category, intensity, and genuineness. In order to find out the accuracy according to the modality of data, the database is divided into audio-video data, audio data, and video data.

Protective effects of Panax ginseng berry extract on blue light-induced retinal damage in ARPE-19 cells and mouse retina

  • Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a significant visual disease that induces impaired vision and irreversible blindness in the elderly. However, the effects of ginseng berry extract (GBE) on the retina have not been studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the protective effects of GBE on blue light (BL)-induced retinal damage and elucidate its underlying mechanisms in human retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19 cells) and Balb/c retina. Methods: To investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of GBE on retinal damage in vitro, we performed cell viability assay, pre-and post-treatment of sample, reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and western immunoblotting using A2E-laden ARPE-19 cells with BL exposure. In addition, Balb/c mice were irradiated with BL to induce retinal degeneration and orally administrated with GBE (50, 100, 200 mg/kg). Using the harvested retina, we performed histological analysis (thickness of retinal layers), qRT-PCR, and western immunoblotting to elucidate the effects and mechanisms of GBE against retinal damage in vivo. Results: GBE significantly inhibited BL-induced cell damage in ARPE-19 cells by activating the SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway, regulating NF-kB translocation, caspase 3 activation, PARP cleavage, expressions of apoptosis-related factors (BAX/BCL-2, LC3-II, and p62), and ROS production. Furthermore, GBE prevented BL-induced retinal degeneration by restoring the thickness of retinal layers and suppressed inflammation and apoptosis via regulation of NF-kB and SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway, cleavage of caspase 3 and PARP, and expressions of apoptosis-related factors in vivo. Conclusions: GBE could be a potential agent to prevent dry AMD and progression to wet AMD.

Crossmodal Perception of Mismatched Emotional Expressions by Embodied Agents (에이전트의 표정과 목소리 정서의 교차양상지각)

  • Today an embodied agent generates a large amount of interest because of its vital role for human-human interactions and human-computer interactions in virtual world. A number of researchers have found that we can recognize and distinguish between various emotions expressed by an embodied agent. In addition many studies found that we respond to simulated emotions in a similar way to human emotion. This study investigates interpretation of mismatched emotions expressed by an embodied agent (e.g. a happy face with a sad voice); whether audio-visual channel integration occurs or one channel dominates when participants judge the emotion. The study employed a 4 (visual: happy, sad, warm, cold) $\times$ 4 (audio: happy, sad, warm, cold) within-subjects repeated measure design. The results suggest that people perceive emotions not depending on just one channel but depending on both channels. Additionally facial expression (happy face vs. sad face) makes a difference in influence of two channels; Audio channel has more influence in interpretation of emotions when facial expression is happy. People were able to feel other emotion which was not expressed by face or voice from mismatched emotional expressions, so there is a possibility that we may express various and delicate emotions with embodied agent by using only several kinds of emotions.

  • Recently, rapidly increasing internet Websites are providing us with the new kinds of multimedia informations without borders acting as the center for exchanging informations. Such new media informations through the internet passes informations via light on the monitor and provides the various informations, with the differentiation from the traditional printing media, it can be searched with electronic commands in limited space. In the process of adapting the new technologies, new media has successfully responded to the fast change and the development of its needs by experiencing the trials and errors, steadily establishing the stable position with its new information transferring and exchanging methods. The representative hompage of websites of information transformations means the first page containing no lower directories and consist of titles, icons, symbols and addresses and can design them in consideration of graphical process, planning, contents and others. Such hompages are very important since the graphical images shows its visual expressions deciding the total meanings of the hompages. In this research, we have analyzed the visual factors of frequencies, ratio of areas, distributions, alignment methodologies on layouts of hompages consisting titles, icons, contents and symbols, etc. from randomly picked samples of 161 hompages of websites in the internets of various areas. Generally, the homepages are designed with graphical expressions in personal way and the feedbacks and responses of such may differs, but we think, this can be used as reference materials for the analysis of new media in objective way. Also, it can be used as the base informations for arrangement and planning of designs with the characteristics of graphics and Graphic User Interfaces in the background which are implemented over internet.

  • Unlike a study related in language alone, rhetorical study of current time, composed with multi-culture, medias, communication, presents its own field that covers from the form of discourse(persuasive) to another form of discourse(not persuasive). If there was a study of making beautiful sentences for story and finding simple method of speech in Greek and roman period of an ancient time, it now a study in which one finds the essence of literary style or terminology in the expression of sentence. The taller case is especially important, given that the importance of what to express visually is on-going active procedure of this stuffy as itself an activity of communication. When a visual object persuades viewers, the activity of communication derives them to react and to understand the intention of an artist. The matter of how to speak is the matter of how to shape message persuasively. This persuasive method or technique is study of rhetoric. The three aspects (figurative, accentuating, mutating) of rhetorical expression of an illustration, the visual image can give fresh feelings to be in intimate relations with public. These rhetorical expressions also vitalize the story that is expressed on illustration with crisp image. It helps to attain expected effects while discovering essential meaning through the corresponding linguistic interpretation of an image. The study aims at the most effective way to communicate by figuring the most strong and direct illustrative message out. One of the method is to patternize illustrative expressions that are established from all kinds of shapes of Rhetoric. Therefore ,an operation of significance and an implication can shape an ultimate goal of this study from acknowledging the mechanism that modern illustration embraces.
