  • Recently the use demand for national parks has been rapidly increased due to the change of leisure patterns in Korea. The intensive use of national parks, however, can cause serious management problems both in resource conservation and in visitor satisfaction. In order to prepare the effective management plan for the sustainable use of national parks, it is essential to evaluate the visitor satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to provide important information for the management strategies for Namsan and Tohamsan national parks in Kyongju. Importance-performance analysis (IPA) was adopted to analyze the visitor expectation and satisfaction. The questionnaire survey was performed to the 420 visitors of the three sites (Namsan Sam-reung, Namsam Yong-jang, and Tohamsan) that are the most popular areas in Kyongju national park. The IPA for the 18 satisfaction items shows that all the values for importance are higher than those for performance in the three sites. This results indicates that visitors' satisfactions for the 18 items are lower than their expectations. The IP matrix reveals that the management effort should be concentrated on the educational opportunities for nature and culture in Yong-jang, on the convenient access to park in Sam-reung. and on the availability of cool drinking water in Tohamsan. Based on the results, several suggestions for the management strategies were summarized for the three sites in conclusion.

A questionnaire survey was carried on at major entry points(Dobong district) in Bukhansan National Park. 239 random samples of visitor were chosen to represent general visitor population. As for the results from comparing other studies, some differences of demographic characteristics(age, income, occupation etc.) and use patterns(purpose, group types etc.) exist. Total visitors' satisfaction level with the area was relatively high. However, negative impacts on the trails and trash problem by increasing visitor numbers due to abrogating admission fee were indicated as the managerial priority in Bukhansan National Park.

  • This study is intended to examine the effect of characteristics of museum visitors and visit type on perceived relative status, aesthetic responses, and perceived visit benefits, which in turn affect visitor satisfaction and personal and social participatory behaviors. Research was held for four weeks. A total of 308 questionnaires were collected out of 315 distributed. However, additional 15 were excluded due to inadequate responses. The findings of the study are as follows: While museum visitor characteristics yielded significant effects on the perceived relative status and perceived visit benefit, it did not have significant effects on aesthetic responses. Additionally, while visit types showed considerable impact on perceived relative status, it did not yield significant effect on aesthetic responses or the perceived visit benefit. Perceived relative status of a museum had positive effects on aesthetic responses, but not on the perceived visit benefit. Furthermore, while perceived relative status did not have significant effect on visitor satisfaction, it did have evident effects on the aesthetic response and the perceived visit benefit. Lastly, greater visitor satisfaction was confirmed to contribute to greater participatory behavior in various prospective programs and events offered by museums. Hence, it would be imperative for museums to gear their attention to encourage internal participatory behaviors such as visitor education, donation and charity events, which would consequently transcend to viewing museums more as a public space shared by the general public.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore visitors' experiences based on two different types of ecological sites: natural and artificial ecological sites. Specifically, this study aimed to analyze the differences in the perceived experiences and satisfaction according to the perception of the visitors to the ecological sites. First, the analysis of measurement factors of visitor experience perception identified four factors such as ecological experience, environment friendliness, sociality, and relaxation. The comparison of perception according to the factor of visitor experience showed that there were significant differences between natural and artificial ecological sites and that the perceived visitor experience was generally higher in the natural ecological sites. The result of the analysis of the influence of the perceived visitor experience to ecological sites on visitor experience showed the relaxation had the largest influence for both natural and artificial ecological sites. The ecological experience and environmental friendliness also had a significant impact on visitor satisfaction in the natural ecological sites and artificial ecological sites, respectively. This paper also discussed the implications for planning and management issues at ecological sites.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between visitor uses of national parks and economic variables, such as the index of industrial product and the consumer price index. The results from the Granger Causality test showed that the index of industrial product and the consumer price index influenced visitor use at national parks. Also the Impulse Response Analysis showed that the index of industrial product and the consumer price index greatly influenced national park visitor use in the short term as well as the long term. The study showed that national park visitor use was mainly influenced by variance decompositions. These results suggested that economic variables could be used to not only forecast the demand for recreation but also establish recreational policies.
