  • This study developed an English conversation learning program in immersive virtual reality (VR) environments and compared its effects with non-immersive VR environment using a computer monitor. The effects of the program was assessed using language anxiety and learning achievement. The results indicated that students' language anxiety decreased significantly after learning English conversation in VR environment, but there was no difference between immersive and non-immersive VR. The two VR conditions also produced similar learning outcomes. Future research on immersive VR need to address cyber sickness problems and develop effective learning contents in order to realize its potential for learning.

  • Ubiquitous home refers not only to home but also to logical space, including a wide range of out-home personal devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, laptops, car navigators, and office PCs. There are certain connection barriers among the devices, such as the dynamic IP address, NAT. In a home network, various devices coexist in heterogeneous networks, such as IP, IEEE1394, PLC, Bluetooth, ZigBee, UWB, and IrDA, all of which lack interoperability due to their different physical transmission characteristics and protocols. In ubiquitous home where an unrestricted collaboration of the devices is essential to offer services that meet the users' requirements, free interoperability among the devices must be guaranteed. This paper proposes a networking model for interoperability of the heterogeneous devices in a ubiquitous home based on a virtual overlay network which hides the complicated physical network configurations and heterogeneity of the service protocols.

  • Virtual LAN (VLAN) is an architecture to enable communication between end stations as if they were on the same LAN regardless of their physical locations. VLAN defines a limited broadcast domain to reduce the bandwidth waste. The Newbridge Inc. developed a layer 3 VLAN product called VIVID, which configures a VLAN based on W subnet addresses. In a VIVID system, a single route server is deployed for address resolution, VLAN configuration, and data broadcasting to a VLAN. If the size of the network, over which the VLANS supported by the VIVID system spans, becomes larger, this single route server could become a bottleneck point of the system performance. One possible approach to cope with this problem is to deploy multiple route servers. We propose two architectures, organic and independent, to expand the original VIVID system to deploy multiple route servers. A course of simulations are done to analyze the performance of each architecture that we propose. The simulation results show that the performances of the proposed architectures depend on the lengths of VLAN broadcasting sessions and the number of broadcast data frames generated by a session. It has also been shown that there are tradeoffs between the scalability of the architecture and their efficiency in data transmissions.

  • Services for self-designing, or adaptive customization services, have become dominant in virtual marketplaces and are believed to create additional values both for the company as well as for the customer. While most research focused on the value from the services' outputs, this research attempts to address the customer-perceived value deriving from the process of the services, and focuses on the self-fulfillment effect of the involved mental processing. An online survey was administered with 313 U.S. shoppers. In the results, participants using adaptive customization services reported higher self-fulfillment perceptions, than did those not using the services. Furthermore, both the self-fulfillment perceptions (i.e., autonomy and competence) significantly increased perceived design utility. The results suggest that the process of adaptive customization services should be strategically managed to improve the customers' positive mental states that subsequently improve the perceived value of the output designs. Implications and suggestions for future studies are dsicussed.

  • This paper attempts to address the motion parameter skip problem associated with three-dimensional trajectory tracking of an underactuated Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) using backstepping-based control, due to the unsmoothness of tracking trajectory. Through kinematics concepts, a three-dimensional dynamic velocity regulation controller is derived. This controller makes use of the surge and angular velocity errors with bio-inspired models and backstepping techniques. It overcomes the frequently occurring problem of parameter skip at inflection point existing in backstepping tracking control method and increases system robustness. Moreover, the proposed method can effectively avoid the singularity problem in backstepping control of virtual velocity error. The control system is proved to be uniformly ultimately bounded using Lyapunov stability theory. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the developed controller, which can realize accurate three-dimensional trajectory tracking for an underactuated AUV with constant external disturbances.

  • A efficient P2P (peer to peer) networking for sharing multimedia contents is proposed to overcome the limitations of unstructured approaches. The proposed approach is attempting to organize the participating P2P nodes by modifying a n-dimensional cartesian-coordinate space DHT (distributed hash table), CAN (content addressable network). The network identifiers (e.g., network prefix of IP address) of participating nodes are mapped into the CAN virtual coordinate space (in 2-d) and nodes with similar identifiers are grouped into the same zone. The proposed scheme is expected to show some level of concentration reflecting the network identifiers. Network simulator-based evaluation is performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • Increasingly numerical (finite element) modeling of concrete hinges on our ability to develop a representative volume element with all its heterogeneity properly discretized. Yet, despite all the sophistication of the ensuing numerical models, the initial discretization has been for the most part simplistic. Whenever the heterogeneity of the concrete is to be accounted for, a mesh is often manually crafted through the arbitrary inclusion of the particles (aggregates and/or voids) in an ad-hoc manner. This paper develops a mathematical strategy to precisely address this limitation. Algorithms for the random generation and placement of elliptical (2D) or ellipsoid (3D) inclusions, with possibly radiating cracks, in a virtual concrete model are presented. Collision detection algorithms are extensively used.

  • The term "VPN", or Virtual Private Network, generally means the public network of vendors which is providing a communication net and other network using WWW as a backbone of Its WAN. the existing VPN is expected to reduce expenses and will improve the productivity, however, the network provider should accept the management complexity and the overhead after tunneling and encryption. But MPLS VPN can provide efficient VPN which would not need the address transformation and the additional overhead made by tunneling after giving separately ID. This paper describes the protocol for MPLS VPN which is about a node that moves based on Customer Edge (CE) router and supports a scheme for QoS.
