  • In the present study a new measurement technique has been developed, which uses an ultrasonic transmission signal in order to identify the vertical two phase flow pattern. The ultrasonic measurement system developed in the present study not only provides the information required for the identification of vertical two phase flow patterns but also makes real time identification possible. Various vertical two phase flow patterns such as bubbly, slug, churn, annular flow etc. have been accurately identified with the present ultrasonic measurement system under atmospheric condition. In addition, the present test apparatus can practically simulate the ultrasonic propagation characteristics under high temperature and high pressure systems. Therefore, it is expected that the present ultrasonic flow pattern identification technique could be applicable to the vertical two phase flow systems under high temperature and high pressure conditions.

  • In the present study, the effect of horizontal vent position on fire phenomena in the enclosure with vertical and horizontal vents was examined using numerical simulation. Case 1 indicates the condition that the horizontal vent is in the center of the ceiling. Case 3 indicates the condition that the horizontal vent is far away from the vertical vent. Case 2 indicates the condition that the horizontal vent is installed between Case 1 and Case 3. The temperature distribution, smoke layer temperature, velocity distribution, and mass flow rate of horizontal vent flow were analyzed. In Case 2, the temperatures were lowest and the mass flow rate through the horizontal vent was largest. This is because the flame is inclined by the inflow through the vertical vent. Hence, to determine the proper horizontal vent location for the high smoke ventilation performance, the inflow through the vertical vent and its effect on flame behavior should be considered.

  • ACF preparation from different materials and its application in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment has been focused in environmental field. Different materials have been used to prepare ACF around the world. This study aims to prepare, characterize and use of ACF from loofah for removal of Tetracycline from water through composite vertical flow constructed wetlands. ACF was prepared and it was tested for characterization, later it was used for removal of Tetracycline from water through composite vertical flow constructed wetlands. In composite vertical flow constructed wetlands, three HRTs were set according to the experiment, 1D, 2D, and 3D is individually. Samples were transported immediately from collection point to laboratory for analyzing. Samples were measured for Tetracycline (TC), Total Phosphorus (TP), and Total nitrogen and COD. Tetracycline absorbance with respective 356nm was obtained good and HRT is important factor. Results show that composite vertical flow constructed wetlands with ACF from luffa is best option and it is recommended to study further deep analysis.

  • Modern small modular nuclear reactors can be built on a barge in ocean, therefore, their flow characteristics depend upon the ocean motions. In the present research, effect of rolling motion on flow and friction characteristics of laminar flow through vertical and horizontal narrow channels has been studied. A computer code has been developed using MPS method for two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with rolling motion force incorporated. Numerical results have been validated with the literature and have been found in good agreement. It has been found that the impact of rolling motions on flow characteristics weakens with increase in flow rate and fluid viscosity. For vertical narrow channels, the time averaged friction coefficient for vertical channels differed from steady friction coefficient. Furthermore, increasing the horizontal distance from rolling pivot enhanced the flow fluctuations but these stayed relatively unaffected by change in vertical distance of channel from the rolling axis. For horizontal narrow channels, the flow fluctuations were found to be sinusoidal in nature and their magnitude was found to be dependent mainly upon gravity fluctuations caused by rolling.

  • Effects of the width and location of a flow disturbing circular plate, installed at a vertical tube surface, on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of water at atmospheric pressure have been investigated experimentally. Through the tests, changes in the degree of intensity of liquid agitation have been analyzed. The plate changes the fluid flow around the tube as well as heat transfer coefficients on the tube surface. It is identified that the plate width changes the rate of the circulating flow whereas its location changes the growth of the active agitating flow. Moreover, the flow chugging was observed at the downside of the plate.

  • The exhaust gas with solid particle goes through the riser in both particle circulating type and circulating fluidized bed type heat exchanger to recover the heat. During heat transfer, gas velocity in vertical riser decreases as viscosity of exhaust gas decreases. In this case, when the particle size is fixed, sometimes the exhaust gas happens to have lower velocity which prohibit them to go out of the riser. In this paper the particle motion in vertical Rayleigh flow was studied. The behavior of heat transfer was investigated by means of velocity and temperature distribution. The result from numerical analysis was validated by the experimental results. Fortran code was used to analyze the particle motion in vertical Rayleigh flow.

  • This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flow through openings with vertical partitions. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. Exchange flow rates are investigated experimentally by using partitioned opening and opening with extended partition to assess fluids interference of the exchange flow at the stand pipe rupture accident. A tests vessel with the two types of opening on top of test cylinder is used in the experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. Amplitude and progress of interference fringes of the flows are observed and used as a support in comparison with the exchange flow rates. Flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air for both two types of the opening are separated by inserted partition within the opening, but in the case of partitioned opening, unseparated flow is formed at the opening entrance and the two flows interface. The exchange flow rate for the partitioned opening is not greater than that of the opening with extended partition because of the fluids interference at the entrance of opening. Finally, the fluids interference at the opening entrance is found to be one of important factors on the helium-air exchange flow rate.

  • This paper studied the peristaltic transport of upper convected Maxwell nanofluid through a porous medium in a heated (isothermal) symmetric vertical channel. The nanofluid is assumed to be electrically conducting in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. These phenomena are modeled mathematically by a differential equations system by taking low Reynolds number and long-wavelength approximation, the yield differential equations have solved analytically. A suggested new technique to display and discuss the trapping phenomenon is presented. We discussed and analyzed the pumping characteristics, heat function, flow velocity and trapping phenomena which were illustrated graphically through a set of figures for various values of parameters of the problem. The numerical results show that, there are remarkable effects on the vertical velocity, pressure gradient and trapping phenomena with the thermal change of the walls.

  • Recently, fluidized bed heat exchangers with circulating liquid are widely used in a number of places-chemical, process, food concentration, waste water treatment facilities, etc. In a circulating heat exchanger, solid particles circulate with the liquid, thereby increase the heat transfer and reduce the fouling potential of the heat exchanger. In this study, glass beads were circulated through a vertical tube. The pressure loss and the heat transfer coefficient were measured. At low flow velocities, glass beads enhanced the heat transfer considerably. The enhancement increased as the volume fraction of the glass beads increased. The pressure loss showed a similar trend. From the observed particle behavior near tube wall, a possible explanation of the trend is provided.
