  • A new silicon-based IC interconnect transmission line parameter extraction methodology is presented and experimentally examined. Unlike the PCB or MCM interconnects, a dominant energy propagation mode in the silicon-based IC interconnects is not quasi-TEM but slow wave mode(SWM). The transmission line parameters are extracted taking the silicon substrate effect (i.e., slow wave mode) into account. The capacitances are calculated considering silicon substrate surface as a ground. Whereas the inductances are calculated by using an effective dielectric constant. In order to verify the proposed method, test patterns were designed. Experimental data have agreement within 10%. Further, crosstalk noise simulation shows excellent agreements with the measurements which are performed with high-speed time domain measurement ( i.e., TDR/TDT measurements) for test pattern, while RC model or RLC model without silicon substrate effect show about 20~25% underestimation error.

  • Due to the rapid development of semiconductor technology, the complexity of VLSI circuits has heavily increased. With the increased densities of integrated circuits, several different types of faults can occur Thus, testing such circuits is becoming a sever problem. Delay testing can detect system timing failures caused by delay faults. However, the conventional delay fault coverage in terms of the number of detected faults may not be an effective measure of delay testing because, unlike a stuck-at-faults, the impact of a delay fault is dependent on its delay defect size rather than on its existence. Thus, the effectiveness of delay testing is dependent on the propagation delay of the path to be tested, the delay defect size, and the system clock interval. This paper proposes a new delay defect fault coverage that considers both propagation delay of the path to be tested and additional delay defect size. And the relationship between delay defect fault coverage and defect level is analyzed.

  • This has been possible by integration techniques such as very large scale integration (VLSI) and wafer scale integration (WSI). Redundancy has been extensively used for manufacturing memory chips and to provide repair of these devices in the presence of faulty cells. If there are too many defects, the momory has to be rejected. But if there are a few defects, it will be more efficient and cost reducing for the company to use it by repairing. Therefore, laser-repair process is nedded for such a reason and redundancy analysis is needed to establish correct target of laser-repair process. The proposed CRA (Correlation Repair Algorithm) simulation, beyond the idea of the conventional redundancy analysis algorithm, aims at reducing the time spent in the process and strengthening cost competitiveness by performing redundancy analysis after simulating each case of defect.

  • In this paper, we propose a hardware architecture to generate digital hologram using the modified CGH (Computer Generated Hologram) algorithm for hardware implementation and design to FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) platform. After analyzing the CGH algorithm, we propose an architecture of CGH cell which efficiently products digital hologram, and design CGH Kernel from configuring CGH Cell. Finally we implement CGH Processor using CGH Kernel, SDRAM Controller, DMA, etc. Performance of the proposed hardware can be proportionally increased through simply addition of CGH Cell in CGH Kernel, since a CGH Cell has operational independency. The proposed hardware was implemented using XC2VP70 FPGA of Xilinx and was stably operated in 200MHz clock frequency. It take 0.205 second for generating $1,280{\times}1,024$ digital hologram from 3 dimensional object which has 40,000 light sources.

  • This paper proposes a low power selective data write (SDW) scheme for a phase-change random access memory (PRAM). The PRAM consumes large write power because large write currents are required during long time. At first, the SDW scheme reads a stored data during write operation. And then, it writes an input data only when the input and stored data are different. Therefore, it can reduce the write power consumption to a half. The 1K-bit PRAM test chip with $128{\times}8bits$ is implemented with a $0.8{\mu}m$ CMOS technology with a $0.8{\mu}m$ GST cell.

  • UDP library of Verilog HDL has been used for simulation of digital systems. But it takes a lot of time and efforts to generate a gate-level library equivalent to the UDP library manually due to the characteristic of UDP that does not support synthesis. It is indispensable to generate equivalent gate-level model in testing the digital systems because fault coverage can be reduced without the equivalent gate-level models. So, it is needed to automate the process of generating the equivalent gate-level models. An algorithm to solve this problem has been proposed, but it is unnecessarily complex and time-consuming. This paper suggests a new improved algorithm to implement the conversion to gate-level models, which exploits the characteristic of UDP Experimental results are demonstrated to show the effectiveness of the new algorithm.

  • This paper aims at studying the improvement of test method for t-weight sensitive fault (t-wsf) detect. The development of RAM fabrication technology results in not only the increase at device density on chips but also the decrease in line widths in VLSI. But, the chip size that was large and complex is shortened and simplified while the cost of chips remains at the present level, in many cases, even lowering. First of all, The testing patterns for RAM fault detect, which is apt to be complicated , need to be simplified. This new testing method made use of Local Lower Bound (L.L.B) which has the memory with the beginning pattern of 0(l) and the finishing pattern of 0(1). The proposed testing patterns can detect all of RAM faults which contain stuck-at faults, coupling faults. The number of operation is 6N at 1-weight sensitive fault, 9,5N at 2-weight sensitive fault, 7N at 3-weight sensitive fault, and 3N at 4-weight sensitive fault. This test techniques can reduce the number of test pattern in memory cells, saving much more time in test, This testing patterns can detect all static weight sensitive faults and pattern sensitive faults in RAM.

  • A parallel analog Viterbi decoder which decodes PRML signal of DVD has been fabricated into a VLSI chip. The parallel analog Viterbi decoder implements the functions of the conventional digital Viterbi decoder utilizing the analog parallel processing circuit technology. In this paper, the analog parallel Viterbi decoding technology is applied for the PRML signal decoding of DVD. The benefits are low power consumption and less silicon consumption. The designed circuits are analysed and the test results of the fabricated chip are reported.

  • This paper describes novel flip-flops with improved robustness and reduced power consumption. Variable sampling window flip-flop (VSWFF) adjusts the width of the sampling window according to input data, providing robust data latching as well as shorter hold time. The flip-flop also reduces power consumption for higher input switching activities as compared to the conventional low-power flip-flop. Clock swing-reduced variable sampling window flip-flop (CSR-VSWFF) reduces clock power consumption by allowing the use of a small swing clock. Unlike conventional reduced clock swing flip-flops, it requires no additional voltage higher than the supply voltage, eliminating design overhead related to the generation and distribution of this voltage. Simulation results indicate that the proposed flip-flops provide uniform latency for narrower sampling window and improved power-delay product as compared to conventional flip-flops. To evaluate the performance of the proposed flip-flops, test structures were designed and implemented in a $0.3\mu m$ CMOS process technology. Experimental result indicates that VSWFF yields power reduction for the maximum input switching activity, and a synchronous counter designed with CSR-VSWFF improves performance in terms of power consumption with no use of extra voltage higher than the supply voltage.

  • This paper describes a single-chip full-custom implementation of pipelined adaptive decision-feedback equalizer(PADFE) using a 0.25-${\mu}m$ CMOS technology for wide-band wireless digital communication systems. To enhance the throughput rate of ADFE, two pipeline stages are inserted into the critical path of the ADFE by using delayed least-mean-square(DLMS) algorithm. Redundant binary (RB) arithmetic is applied to all the data processing of the PADFE including filter taps and coefficient update blocks. When compared with conventional methods based on two's complement arithmetic, the proposed approach reduces arithmetic complexity, as well as results in a very simple complex-valued filter structure, thus suitable for VLSI implementation. The design parameters including pipeline stage, filter tap, coefficient and internal bit-width, and equalization performance such as bit error rate (BER) and convergence speed are analyzed by algorithm-level simulation using COSSAP. The single-chip PADFE contains about 205,000 transistors on an area of about $1.96\times1.35-mm^2$. Simulation results show that it can safely operate with 200-MHz clock frequency at 2.5-V supply, and its estimated power dissipation is about 890-mW. Test results show that the fabricated chip works functionally well.
