A Study on Universal Design Guideline of the Urban Railway Station: Transit Zone (도시철도 역사 환승구간의 유니버설 디자인 기준에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: Recently, Universal design has been applied to a variety of concepts of social integration in the national legislation and institutions, however, the applying to urban railway station is not satisfied. Most of cases, the handicapped can not work continuously, universal design must be provided. Methods: This study derives the detailed criteria through comparing and analyzing an national and international universal design-related system in transit zone. And the status is investigated in transit zone of domestic urban railway station. Improved national standard requirements are derived considering the type of the handicapped and universal design principles. Result: The domestic status shows that the most lacking entry criteria is not specified in national standards or the design is a lowest-level required by criteria through comparing detailed criteria drawn into domestic analysis. Therefore, in order to provide a pedestrian environment to meet the universal design principles and requirements for the handicapped, there is a need to re-establish with a specific national standards. Implications: This study will draw on universal design standards for seamless transfer in transit zone of urban railway station. The next studies are needed to target the overall paths ranging from outside to landing in urban railway station.

  • As a result of an increase in population of the Metropolitan area and a steady change of circumstances in many parts, the city is sprawling out into the suburbs. This phenomenon causes the necessity of modification of present urban plan. It is risen as a point of issue that construction systems of new railway routes and underground construction, which should be followed the new urban plan in case of inter-regional railway and regional railway. It is hard to find sufficient financial resources, nevertheless the railway improvement definitely affects regional development and improvement of social environment. Also, there is a limit to government subsidies. In this respect, it is necessary to set up a new idea about movement of existing railway routes and improvement of the equipment. This study examines the present problems of railroad construction system in urban downtown area and introduces a suitable institutional way through referring to the instances of other countries.

  • Before 2010, assignments proposed by government caused inconvenience of users(operation institutions & customers) as performing that National research organization suggested requirements from private organizations to special institutes, but now the institution of assignments is improving to reflect opinions from the present users. This is a study on methods for drawing a task of Rolling stock's core parts & enhancing of Urban Railway/Light Railway Transit. The definition of multiple stakeholders(local government, operation institution, research organization, academic world, the industrial world, etc.) related to rolling stock of urban railway/Light railway transit, experts in rolling stock and the application for designing of question items verified and designed through Delphi technique for objectivity, justness and fairness. Also, it is to draw a conclusion of assignments through a study on methods for drawing a task of Rolling stock's core parts & enhancing of Urban Railway/Light Railway Transit as sharing a process of assignments and integrating opinions of each stakeholder of urban railway/light railway transit.

  • Since reports on trip delays or incidents often appear as accident articles on the press, the social criticisms and concerns on the safety of the urban railway are increasing. Therefore, a railway authority sometimes adopts an abstract safety goal like "let's build the urban railway to a masterpiece level" or "let's obtain an aeronautic safety level" to make citizens relieved and to alert involved persons. However with a vague goal, it is almost impossible to make an implementation plan systematic which helps the authority academically verify and validate if the goal is achieved or not. In this paper, the features of the railway safety are described and the safety models for securing the safety of the urban railway are surveyed and categorized. Based on the comparisons among the features and limitations of the models, we identify a more practical model which can be applied to the urban railway more effectively.

Crashworthiness Analysis of the Urban Maglev Vehicle according to Korean Railway Safety Law and Urban Transit Safety Law (철도안전법과 도시철도안전법을 적용한 도시형 자기부상열차의 충돌안전도 해석)

  • This paper studied on the application of the crashworthiness regulations of Korean Railway Safety Law and Urban Transit Safety Law to the urban Maglev vehicle of KIMM. The Urban Maglev vehicle has to comply with the crashworthiness regulations for urban transit vehicles. The collision load cases have been simulated by using explicit finite element analysis. From the numerical results, the crashworthiness regulations of the Urban Transit Safety Law were completely satisfied, but maximum crash pulse requirement in 25 km/h crash event and no plastic deformation requirement in 10 km/h crash event in the Korean Railway Safety Law were not. If a commercial urban Maglev vehicle is developed in the near future, it is necessary that some soft buffing and energy absorbing devices are adopted in its front end so as to satisfy the crashworthiness regulations of the Korean Railway Safety Law.

  • This paper describes a study on the FRACAS(Failure Reporting Analysis and Corrective Action System)-based dependability control platform for domestic urban railway trains. There are more demands for the verification of the dependability of trains as it becomes a regulation for train manufacturers to verify the dependability recently. Train manufacturers as well as railway operators need a effective FRACAS solution to perform the verification of the dependability. Yet current FRACAS solutions have limitations to support the verification processes effectively. This paper addresses the issues of current FRACAS solutions and suggests a FRACAS framework designed for the domestic urban railway trains. Service failure scenarios are standardized using the proposed availability model to implement a more user-friendly and reliable platform. A new FRACAS-based platform for the dependability control (SCARF®) has been developed to implement the suggested framework. The detail interfaces and functions of the platform are explained. The SCARF® platform is expected to engage the increasing demands for the dependability control successfully enhancing the reliability, maintainability, availability and safety of domestic urban railway trains eventually.

  • This paper introduces an overall system design of a real-time monitoring system that monitors condition of urban railway AC/DC transformers, disconnecting switches, circuit breakers, regulators, and GIS (gas insulated switchgear). For effective diagnosis of urban railway facilities we developed optimized sensors and application technology. The proposed system is combined with wireless technology, implementing remote real-time monitoring of urban railway facilities. The derived real-time monitoring system for power facilities in urban railway substations will be applied not only to diagnose low voltage DC (direct current) railways but also to diagnose design of small power facilities of skyscrapers and apartments.

  • The verification of the seismic performance of many urban railway bridges will be done or is done by the regulations of "Seismic Performance Evaluation Methods(Tips) of Existing Bridges" developed by KISTEC in 2004. This present process may involve some of the issues such as the unreflecting of the characteristics of the urban railway bridge and the appearance of ductility-based seismic design method. In this paper, the new and improved seismic performance evaluation system is proposed.

  • Urban Railway was used importantly with transport for several decades. This transportation facilities used electricity. When the breakdown occurs, social, the economic loss is enormous. In addition to, the power equipment was ageing. We need preventive diagnostic monitoring system in order to prevent breakdown of power equipment. In this paper, we investigates characteristic and breakdown type of the Urban Railway power equipment. Through the this research, we can contribute in the operation which power equipment is efficient of the Urban Railway.

  • Hyundai-Rotem Company has designed and manufactured Light Railway Vehicle (LRV) according to the Urban Rail Transit Code, which applies to urban railway vehicles in Korea. The Urban Rail Transit Code specifies the loads, for which vehicle bodies shall be capable of withstanding, identifies how material data shall be used and presents the principles to be used for design verification by analysis and test. The structural design of railway vehicle bodies depends on the loads they are subjected to and the characteristics of the materials they are manufactured from. Therefore Hyundai-Rotem Company has carried out Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and has performed load tests on the vehicle body according to the Urban Rail Transit Code. This research contains the results obtained by the analysis and the load tests. The analysis was carried out using I-DEAS Master Series 12 and load test were carried out using specially designed test jigs and equipment are used for the load tests.
