  • This study aims to explore how professors at community colleges are experiencing career guidance for their students, uncovering key components related to causes, phenomena, contexts, coping strategies, etc., and deriving a paradigm model to structurally. To achieve this objective, focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 23 community college professors, and the results were analyzed using the grounded theory method (Strauss & Corbin, 1998). The analysis yielded 17 categories and 31 subcategories. The central phenomenon in the career guidance of community college professors was categorized into two groups: the distress experience in career guidance and attitude changes toward interactions with students..Three categories of causal conditions contributing to the occurrence of the central phenomenon were identified: professors' lack of expertise in career guidance, students' scope and needs for career guidance, and students' low interest and expectations. Additionally, four contextual conditions corresponding to special situations or circumstances that contributed to the central phenomenon were identified: increasing demand for career guidance, excessive burden and time constraints for career guidance, lack of communication about career guidance at the institutional level, and limitations within the career guidance support system. Furthermore, the study uncovered patterns of action-interaction, mediating conditions, and outcomes. This study is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the actual experiences of college professors in the career guidance process, and to stimulate consideration of the types of support required for effective career guidance for college professors in the future.

  • Free-talking in Korea has recently been emphasized as a way of improving students' speaking ability outside of the classroom. The purpose of this study is to examine perceptions of free-talking, to understand what type of roles were played by or allotted between Korean students and international professors (IPs) and to look for effective speaking strategies for utilizing free-talking. Participants of this study were 68 university students and 23 IPs. The data collected through a survey type of questionnaire were analyzed by this researcher and the main findings indicate that students and IPs have somewhat different viewpoints about their concepts of free-talking. Students expressed varying viewpoints depending on their experience and class (year). In terms of the benefits, usefulness, and satisfaction of free-talking, students and IPs seem to be in more agreement with each other although the two groups have conflicting perceptions in the particular operation of free-talking, especially in terms of preparation and feedback. Students stated that they feel anxious, nervous, and that they struggle with peer pressure while free-talking. However, they feel that through free-talking they build up confidence and increase their speaking ability. Regarding roles, most professors play a helpful role as a guide or facilitator while students want professors to provide more suitable materials and to tutor them by means of appropriate feedback and strategies as well-prepared teachers like a prompter, participant or tutor in the timely manner. Finally, this paper proffers a few practical suggestions for activating free-talking and a discussion of the pedagogical implications.

  • The aim of this paper is to find directions for improving creativity education in a research-oriented college of engineering. As a method, we interviewed 17 professors and 7 students from a research-oriented college of engineering in Seoul, South Korea and learned about their experiences related to creativity education. As a result, we were able to identify 6 topics on which the interviewees' opinions vary. We found that most professors we interviewed did not think creativity was important in their classrooms as they thought passing on engineering knowledge was more important in foundational engineering education, and creativity is hard to define. However, their evaluation method in class showed that they valued creativity, and were trying to teach creativity with little success. Also, while the professors thought they needed more communication with the students to improve creativity education, the students thought they needed more autonomy. In consideration of our findings, we proposed 4 directions for improving creativity education in a research-oriented college of engineering. First, shift perspective on the foundational education for engineering. Second, connect basic curriculum and extracurricular activities. Third, actively connect basic curriculum with the industry. Finally, provide appropriate facilities that enable different types of interactions between professors and students.

This study compared the dental hygiene curriculum of domestic and overseas university and tired to provide the basic data for the development of standard curriculum that meets the education policy changes. Methods: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 1,192 participants including dental hygiene professors, dental hygienists and students. Data were collected by mail, telephone call from the professors and research assistants, email, and direct visit from June 10 to August 10, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of 4 questions of general characteristics of the subjects and 13 questions of dental hygiene curriculum. Results: The professors answered the development of integrated dental hygiene curriculum as the first priority(48.9%) and dental hygienists(51.6%) and students(42.6%) chose the development of new dental hygiene curriculum(p<0.001). In the analysis of validity of dental hygiene curriculum, the professors gave 3.29 to the validity of evaluation for basic job performance, and the clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.05 and 3.26 points, respectively(p<0.001). In relation to the necessity of the change of the dental hygiene curriculums, the professors gave 4.17 points which implied that curriculum change is the most important and necessary thing to do. The clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.90 and 3.47 points, respectively(p<0.001). Conclusions: The above-mentioned findings suggest that the revision of the current Korean dental hygiene curriculums is required. Therefore organizations related to dental hygiene including professor association and Korean Dental Hygienists Association should carefully rebuild the curriculum to improve the competency of dental hygienists. • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the problems with the current practical examination, to suggest some of the right directions for that and to facilitate the improvement of the exam. Methods : The subjects in this study were the selected professors involving professors in charge of practice and the selected clinical dental hygienists who had ever served as the graders of the national practical exam. Results : A direct practical test was required in the national practical exam (77.3%), and educational facilities(79.2%)(p<0.05). They didn't put confidence in the national practical exam(81.0%) nor viewed the items about the removal and detection of dental calculus as appropriate(58.5%), either. Specifically, the items were considered to be more inappropriate by the professors in charge of practice(74.3%) than by the other professors and clinical dental hygienists(p<0.05). Concerning ways of administering the national exam, the largest group preferred that a professional evaluator should evaluate students in person by visiting their colleges(66.8%). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings illustrated that both of the dental hygiene professors and the clinical dental hygienists thought the current national dental hygienist practical exam would absolutely be necessary since it exerted a great influence on education and educational facilities, and that the national exam should be improved to gain more confidence, to solve comprehensive problems and to ensure the efficiency of administration.
