The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of water, saliva and blood contamination on the bonding strength of metal brackets with a self-etching primer/adhesive to enamel. Ninety-six extracted human teeth were divided into four groups. The brackets were bonded to enamel with a self- etching primer (3M/Unitek Dental Products. Monorovia California) according to one of four protocols. The teeth were bonded in a dry condition (group D) or in contamination with distilled water (group W), artificial saliva (group S). or fresh human blood (group B) Shear bond strengths were tested using an Instron Universal testing machine. After debonding. bracket and tooth surfaces were examined with a stereomicroscope. In each group, four samples were selected and examined with a Scanning electron microscope of the prepared enamel surface and resin-enamel interlace. The results obtained were summarized as follows: Shear bond Strength if group D $(15.22{\pm}2.86MPa)$ and W $(15.20{\pm}3.85 MPa)$ Were higher than in group B$(12.56{\pm}2.94MPa)$ (p<0.05). There were no statistical differences in the shear bond strengths between groups D. W and S (p>0.05). There was a tendency to have less residual adhesive remaining on the enamel surfaces of group B than group D. The SEW morphology of group D and W showed a more roughened etching pattern than group S and B. Water or saliva contamination on bending of orthodontic brackets with Transbond plus self etching primer had almost no influence on bond strength In this study, the blood contaminated group showed the lowest bond strength, but it was above the clinically acceptable bond strength (5.9-7.8 MPa, Reynold, 1975). The results of this study suggest that acceptable clinical bond strengths can be obtained in wet conditions when self-etching adhesives are used.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the shear bond strength and fracture pattern in different enamel tooth surface treatments for resin splinting materials. Materials and Methods: G-FIX and LightFix were used as tooth splinting materials. Twenty bovine mandibular incisors were used for the preparation of the specimens. The exposed enamel surface was separated into four parts. Each tooth was treated with 37% phosphoric acid, 37% phosphoric acid + adhesive resin, 37% phosphoric acid + G-premio bond, and G-premio bond for each fraction. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine. After measuring the shear bond strength, the fractured surface of the specimen was magnified with a microscope to observe the fracture pattern. Two-way ANOVA was used to verify the interaction between the material and the surface treatment method. One-way ANOVA was used for comparison between the surface treatment methods of each material and post-hoc test was conducted with Scheffe's test. An independent t-test was conducted to compare shear bond strengths between materials in each surface treatment method. All statistics were conducted at 95% significance level. Results: G-FIX, a tooth splinting resin, showed similar shear bonding strength when additional adhesive resins were used when material was applied after only acid etching, and LightFix showed the highest shear bonding strength when additional adhesive resins were used after the acid etching. In addition, both G-FIX and LightFix showed the lowest shear bond strength when only self-etching adhesive was applied without additional acid etching. Verification of interactions observed interconnection between resins and surface treatment methods. Most of the mixed failure was observed in all counties. Conclusion: When using G-FIX and LightFix, which are tooth-splinting materials, it is considered that sufficient adhesion will be achieved even after applying only acid etching as instructed by the manufacturer.
To study the effects of foam core density and face-sheet thickness on the mechanical properties and failure modes of aluminum foam sandwich (AFS) beam, especially when the aluminum foam core is made in aluminum alloy and the face sheet thickness is less than 1.5 mm, three-point bending tests were investigated experimentally by using WDW-50E electronic universal tensile testing machine. Load-displacement curves were recorded to understand the mechanical response and photographs were taken to capture the deformation process of the composite structures. Results demonstrated that when foam core was combined with face-sheet thickness of 0.8 mm, its carrying capacity improved with the increase of core density. But when the thickness of face-sheet increased from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm, result was opposite. For AFS with the same core density, their carrying capacity increased with the face-sheet thickness, but failure modes of thin face-sheet AFS were completely different from the thick face-sheet AFS. There were three failure modes in the present research: yield damage of both core and bottom face-sheet (Failure mode I), yield damage of foam core (Failure mode II), debonding between the adhesive interface (Failure mode III).
The surfaces of injection and pressure-molded sheets of poly(ethylene-covulylacetate)(EVA) foams used for shoe mid-sole were treated with low temperature plasma to improve adhesion with a water-based polyurethane adhesives. Several experimental variables were considered, such as radio frequency power, treating time, type of gas. gas flow, and distance between electrode and sample. The modificated surface by plasma treatment were characterized using contact angle meter, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), universal testing machine(UTM). Adhesion was tested by T-peel tests of treated EVA foams/polyurethane adhesive joints. The treatment in the low temperature plasma produced a noticeable decrease in contact angle. The peel strength of EVA foams treated with plasma was increased with plasma treating time, and gas flow.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether extension of the custom base is necessary for enhancement of bond strength, by comparing the debonding forces and residual adhesives of 3 different lingual bracket systems. Methods: A total of 42 extracted upper premolars were randomly divided into 3 groups of 14 each for bonding with brackets having (1) a conventional limited resin custom base; (2) an extended gold alloy custom base: Incognito${TM}$; and (3) an extended resin custom base: KommonBase${TM}$. The bonding area was measured by scanning the bracket bases with a 3-dimensional digital scanner. The debonding force was measured with an Instron universal testing machine, which applied an occlusogingival shear force. Results: The mean debonding forces were 60.83 N (standard deviation [SD] 10.12), 69.29 N (SD 9.59), and 104.35 N (SD17.84) for the limited resin custom base, extended gold alloy custom base, and extended resin custom base, respectively. The debonding force observed with the extended resin custom base was significantly different from that observed with the other bases. In addition, the adhesive remnant index was significantly higher with the extended gold alloy custom base. Conclusions: All 3 custom-base lingual brackets can withstand occlusal and orthodontic forces. We conclude that effective bonding of lingual brackets can be obtained without extension of the custom base.
PURPOSE. To evaluate the sealing performance of Hybrid Coat and its influence on the shear bond strength of five dentin surface cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Six premolars were pretreated to expose the dentin surface prior to the application of Hybrid Coat. The microscopic characteristics of the dentinal surfaces were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then, 40 premolars were sectioned longitudinally, and 80 semi-sections were divided into a control group (untreated) and a study group (treated by Hybrid Coat). Alloy restoration was bonded to the teeth specimen using five different cements. Shear bond strength was measured by the universal testing machine. The fracture patterns and the adhesive interface were observed using a stereomicroscope. RESULTS. SEM revealed that the lumens of dentinal tubules were completely occluded by Hybrid Coat. The Hybrid Coat significantly improved the shear bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) and resin cement (RC) but weakened the performance of zinc phosphate cement (ZPC), zinc polycarboxylate cement (ZPCC) and glass ionomer cement (GIC). CONCLUSION. Hybrid Coat is an effective dentinal tubule sealant, and therefore its combined use with resin or resin-modified glass ionomer cements can be applied for the prostheses attachment purpose.
Thermal energy storage (TES) systems using Microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) have been recognized as one of the most advanced energy technologies in enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. We examined a way to incorporate MPCMs with building materials through application for wood-based flooring. Wood-based flooring is commonly used for floor finish materials of residential buildings in Korea. However, wood-based flooring has not performed the characteristic of heat storage. This study is aimed at manufacturing high thermal efficiency wood flooring by increasing its heat storage using MPCM. As a result, this study confirmed that MPCM is dispersed well in adhesive through the scanning electron microscopy analysis. From the differential scanning calorimetry analysis, it can be confirmed that this composite has the characteristic of a thermal energy storage material. Also, we analyzed how this composition was formed by physical combination through the Fourier transform infrared analysis. Also, we confirmed the bonding strength of the material by using the universal testing machine.
This study was executed to measure the shear bond strength of Panavia EX and Panavia 21 when the Ni-Cr-Be alloy castings were cemented to the enamel surfaces with these cements. The cast metal plates of Ni-Cr-Be alloy were sandblasted and cemented to acid etched enamel surface with Panavia EX or Panavia 21. Their shear bond strength were measured with Instron Universal Testing machine. Within the limits of this study, following conclusions were withdrawn. 1. The mean shear bond strength were 26.85.7MPa, in Panavia EX and 28.35.2MPa, in Panavia 21. 2. t-Test revealed no statistical significance between two groups(.05 level) 3. Macroscopically, bond failures were revealed compound fracture at metal and enamel interfaces, in cases of both cements, as the cement attached partly on both metal and enamel surface.

This study was to compare the tensile bond strength and flexibility of four different soft liners(Coe-Soft, Soft Relining, Soft-Liner, Dura Base Soft) before & after thermocycling. Each soft liner was bonded to denture base resin block, and measured the tensile bond strength and modulus of elasticity using Universal testing machine. The mean value of tensile bond strength and modulus of elasticity for each experimental groups were statistically processed by SPSS(Statistical Package of Social Science). The obtained results were as follows : 1. Dura Base Soft had the highest tensile bond strength and Coe-Soft had the lowest tensile bond strength. 2. Coe-Soft had the lowest modulus of elasticity, and Dura Base Soft had the highest modulus of elasticity. 3. Thermocycling had no effects on the tensile bond strength and modulus of elasticity of all the soft liners. 4. The failure modes of Coe-Soft, Soft Relining, Soft Liner were mainly cohesive failure, and that of Dura Base Soft were mainly adhesive failure.
Vinyl ester (VE) resins, introduced in the late 1960s, have made large strides in reinforced plastics applications as adhesive and matrix materials on their appropriate mechanical performance characteristics in the glassy state. Generally, VE resins are a group of dimethacrylate resins based on bisphenol A type epoxy resin. They exhibit easy handling properties as well as good resistance to most chemical agents due to their mechanical and thermal properties. In this study, the effects of curing methods of vinyl ester resins on gel contents, flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated. Thermal curing (room temperature, $80^{\circ}C$) and electron beam curing were used to crosslink a VE resin/styrene complex (65/35 wt%) with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKPO) as a catalyst and an 8 wt% cobalt naphthenate in styrene solution as a accelerator. For the samples, gel contents as well as flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties were characterized and compared by soxhlet apparatus, universal testing machine (UTM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). As a result, the electron-cured VE resin was confirmed as a better condition than those for gel contents, flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties, respectively.
