Assessing Compliance with the Wildlife Crossing Guideline in South Korea

  • To restore the connectivity of fragmented habitats, 415 wildlife crossings have been built between 1998 and 2014 in South Korea. However, their effect on wildlife conservation is still in doubt. As a first step to examine the effectiveness, our study aims to assess compliance with the guideline for wildlife crossing construction and management, developed by the Ministry of Environment Korea that provides fundamental information to understand the status and the problem of wildlife crossings in Korea and thus to provide practical guidance for the improvement. According to our survey, the Korea National Park Service complied with the guideline best (62.5%) while local government followed the guideline least (46.1%). In addition, the compliance rate was the highest for wildlife crossings in national roads (53.6%) followed by highways (53.2%) and local and municipal roads (52.2%). For the overpass wildlife crossings, the compliance rates for installation of an escaping facility in the drainage and prevention of pedestrian and vehicle access were particularly low. In case of underpass wildlife crossings, small ditches for amphibians and reptiles were not sufficient, and the linkage between wildlife fences and underpass were weak. In order to ensure the effectiveness of wildlife crossings, the effort to increase the compliance rate with the guideline is critical, and mandating the guideline could be a practical way to enforce the compliance.

Construction Stage Analysis of Structure Settlement Using Underpinning (언더피닝 공법을 이용한 구조물 침하에 대한 시공 단계 해석)

  • This paper aims to present accurately analytical modeling method for underpinning using uncertainty reduction, obtained from comparison between numerical analysis and Site measuring data during construction and service stages. Combination of various conditions should be considered for using numerical analysis to predict the behavior of the structure accurately, even though complexly considered the conditions, real construction should be secured the stability by applying the actual instrument measurement data because predicted results are including the considerable uncertainty. In order to secure the stability during construction, the real time instrument measurements together with numerical analysis results performed before construction state are complementary used actively. From the results of this study, the significant settlements are occurred not only in underpass structure of adjacent excavation area but also in the permanent steel pipe structures were analyzed. From the site measurement results of underpass settlement, the settlements are occurred in every stages of excavation, furthermore observed tendency is asymmetrical excavation patterns are settled more than symmetrical excavation patterns. The essential consideration points for numerical analysis are construction sequence, the direction of the existing facilities, the methods of elements modeling, the applied factors for nature of material and different results would be occurred depending upon inputting the above factors.

Applicability examinations of induced drainage system for reduction of uplift pressure in underpass structures: Numerical study (지하차도 부력저감을 위한 유도배수공법의 적용성 검토: 수치해석적 연구)

  • Urban underground structures at low ground elevations (i.e. shallow substructures) unlike typical tunnel structures are subjected to low overburden and high water pressures. This often causes the underground structures to become damaged. Various conventional methods for the urban underpass structures such as dead weight increasement, round anchors, and tension piles, are significantly conservative and provok concerns about the costly, time-consuming installation process. Recently, permanent drainage system becomes to widely use for supplementing the conventional method's shortcomings, but, it is applied without the considerations for ground conditions and water table. In this study, therefore, numerical analyses are performed with various parameters such as groundwater level, wall height, and ground conditions in order to establish design guidelines for induced drainage system which is a kind of the permanent drainage method constructed at the Y-area. According to the numerical results, the induced drainage system is very effective in reducing the uplift pressure that acts on the base of underpass structures.

Analysis on the Influence and Reinforcement Effect of Adjacent Pier Structures according to the Underpass Construction (지하차도 시공에 따른 인접 교각구조물 영향 및 보강효과 분석)

  • In order to solve the serious traffic congestion in seoul metropolitan city, large-scale underground space development such as underpasses, deep underground roads, and GTX (Great Train eXpress) is being carried out. In order to minimize the impact of the adjacent seoul metro line A pier foundation and stability due to the construction of the underground road in Seoul, earth retaining structures were reinforced and the foundation was reinforced as well. In this study, three-dimensional finite element mehtod analysis was performed to evaluate the effect on adjacent construction and to review the stability of the underpass excavation work. The reinforcement effect was quantitatively analyzed through numerical analysis. As a result of the analysis, compared to the result of performing the existing reinforcement when overlapping CIP and ground reinforcement grouting were performed, the displacement of the earth retaining structures was reduced by more than 50%, and stress of the foundation piles were also reduced by more than 45%. Based on the analysis of the numerical analysis results, it was confirmed that the displacement of the walls of earth retaining structures during adjacent construction should be strictly controlled.

Analysis on the characteristics of the earth pressure distribution induced by the integrated steel pipe-roof construction (일체형 강관 파이프루프 시공에 따른 주변 지반의 토압 분포 특성 분석)

  • In recent, various types of steel pipe-roof methods, which is reinforced by mortar after propulsion of steel pipe into the ground, have been used for the construction of trenchless underpass. Integrated steel pipe-roof has flexural stiffness and can resist against overburden load and reduce the stress acting on the concrete underpass structures. Due to arching effect, vertical and horizontal stress distribution around the steel pipe-roof is changing. In this study, therefore, the characteristic of stress distribution around the underpass induced by the construction of integrated steel pipe-roof is investigated by using numerical method. To examine the soil-structure interaction, interface element is introduced. Results show that vertical stress acting on the concrete structure placing inside the steel pipe-roof is significantly reduced due to arching effect and flexural stiffness of integrated steel pipe-roof. Design load can be reduced and effective design of underpass will be available if the earth pressure reduction due to arching effect is considered in the design stage.

A Computationally Inexpensive Radio Propagation Model for Vehicular Communication on Flyovers and Inside Underpasses

  • Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) utilize radio propagation models (RPMs) to predict path loss in vehicular environment. Modern urban vehicular environment contains road infrastructure units that include road tunnels, straight roads, curved roads flyovers and underpasses. Different RPMs were proposed in the past to predict path loss, but modern road infrastructure units especially flyovers and underpasses are neglected previously. Most of the existing RPMs are computationally complex and ignore some of the critical features such as impact of infrastructure units on the signal propagation and the effect of both static and moving radio obstacles on signal attenuation. Therefore, the existing RPMs are incapable of predicting path loss in flyovers and underpass accurately. This paper proposes an RPM to predict path loss for vehicular communication on flyovers and inside underpasses that considers both the static and moving radio obstacles while requiring only marginal overhead. The proposed RPM is validated based upon the field measurements in 5 GHz frequency band. A close agreement is found between the measured and predicted values of path loss.

Stability Analysis of Upper Structures by Soil Grouting (지반 그라우팅에 의한 상부구조물의 안전성 분석)

  • Transportation and further expansion of social infrastructure was needed along the development of urbanization and population concentration. To use the underground space due to the lack of availability of land, it is inevitable to intersect between present structure and tunnel during construction. Soil grouting is one of the ground improvement methods to reinforce weak soil around the underground structures by injection of grouting liquid. Some of central columns of an upper structure are damaged during injection of grouting liquid by injection pressure. To investigate and improve the stability of the tunnel, three dimensional analysis are performed with full construction stages which includes the construction of present underpass, damaging columns of the underpass, reinforcing the columns by H-pile and shear walls, and excavation and construct tunnel. The arrangement of grouting holes such as curtain and horizontal type affects largely to the stability of upper structure and horizontal arrangement diminish the shear forces which is the cause of damage of central columns. The liquid injection type of reinforcement for tunnel is not recommended while the presence of upper structure with columns. Wall type reinforcing is utilize for permant support of upper structures which is affected by grouting injection pressure. H-pile is utilize for temporary support, but not for permanent since the sharing of shear forces is not much to shear wall during tunnel construction.

Three-dimensional Mixed-use Complex Spaces and Setting Criteria for Road Sections for Three-dimensional Addressing

  • As cities continue to expand and additional underground structures are constructed, a policy is being planned to expand addresses, which are national framework data. In this study, the application scope of a proposed 3D (three-dimensional) mixed-use complex space for assigning 3D addresses was defined, based on past research on 3D address systems and by analyzing related laws. Underpass shopping malls, underground walkways (excluding underground shopping malls), and 3D mixed-use transfer centers with a gross floor area of 2,000㎡ or more are connected with each space by underground walkways or public paths. In addition, the detailed space corresponding to the public space of the 3D mixed-use complex space was presented and distinguished from the space to which the detailed address is assigned. The criteria for setting the road section were presented based on the intermediate space, which is a characteristic of 3D mixed-use complex spaces. The proposed criteria were applied to the Express Bus Terminal station (3D mixed-use transfer center) and COEX mall (underpass shopping malls). Thus, the road section was set for an unfamiliar 3D mixed-use complex space. However, by applying the proposed criteria to various 3D mixed-use complex spaces, additional and detailed criteria for different cases should be prepared.

Accuracy Analysis of Road Surveying and Construction Inspection of Underpass Section using Mobile Mapping System

  • MMS (Mobile Mapping System) is being used for HD (High Definition) map construction because it enables fast and accurate data construction, and it is receiving a lot of attention. However, research on the use of MMS in the construction field is insufficient. In this study, road surveying and inspection of construction structures were performed using MMS. Through data acquisition and processing using MMS, point cloud data for the study site was created, and the accuracy was evaluated by comparing with traditional surveying methods. The accuracy analysis results showed a maximum of 0.096m, 0.091m, and 0.093m in the X, Y, and H directions, respectively. Each RMSE was 0.012m, 0.015m, and 0.006m. These result satisfy the accuracy of topographic surveying in the general survey work regulation, indicating that construction surveying using MMS is possible. In addition, a 3D model was created using the design data for the underpass road, and the inspection was performed by comparing it with the MMS data. Through inspection results, deviations in construction can be visually confirmed for the entire underground roadway. The traditional method takes 6 hours for the 4.5km section of the target area, but MMS can significantly shorten the data acquisition time to 0.5 hours. Accurate 3D data is essential data as basic data for future smart construction. With MMS, you can increase the efficiency of construction sites with fast data collection and accuracy.

  • This study was performed to investigate how to design, where to construct, why to degrade, what plan to use systematically the underground structures such as underpass, underground passageways. About 50% of the underground structures are located on Seoul, Kyungi-Do. In design of the underground structures such as underpass, underground passageways, the required conditions are defined. And also in construction stage, the conditions of soil, required structure depth, site characteristics, reasonable construction method, are investigated. In the selection of details for underground structure, the items mainly considered, are the wall and column type, the sidewalk type, anchoring-system type, the water-proofing method, entranc shape. The reason and the adequate measures for the degradation of concrete structure are also investigated. The initial cracking properties due to the thermal characteristic are considered. The state of the art report on the new technologies are reviewed. The recent project for the systematically application to the underground structures is reviewed.
