  • There are two methods commonly used in design of splice plate connection of frame structure. The one is Design by Actual Stress which can sufficiently transfer actual force to an adjacent member using rows of bolts. The other is Design by Member Strength which is able to transfer total allowable stress of effective section area to a connected member. In real design, as a matter of convenience, Standard Connection Drawings have used according to Design by Member Strength. But this method underestimate connection force in shear connection where large connection moment occured. In this study, these Design methods are compared by connection moment in shear connections. and the adequate use of them are recommended. Also In order to evaluate more accurately the actual stress of splice plate of flange on moment. connection, a new calculation method of it is recommended.

  • FBG Sensor, which is smaller than strain gauge and has better durability and does not have a noise from electromagnetic waves, was adapted to develope a smart anchor. A series of pullout tests were performed to verify the feasibility of smart anchor and find out the load transfer mechanism around the steel wire fixed to rock with grout. Distribution of shear stresses at steel wire-grout interface is assessed from the measured strain distribution by the optical fiber sensors and compared with stress distributions predicted by Farmer's and Aydan's formulas. It was found that present theoretical formulas may underestimate the failure depth and magnitude of shear stresses when the pullout loads increase.

  • In this study, it enforced DMT test, CPTu test, laboratory consolidation test, because it estimated stress history of Gwangyang port marine clay. Through DMT test obtained Horizontal stress index($K_D$), predicted overconsolidation ratio by $K_D$. To compare empirical equation with laboratory consolidation test and CPTu test calculated OCR examined application. The result, Powell & Uglow(1988) method underestimated OCR value in comparison with Suggestion. Comparatively Byeon wi yong(2004) and Chang(1991) method seem to exactly predict in-situ stress states. Sugawara(1988) method of CPTu test seems to underestimate OCR.

  • Chloride attack and carbonation induced corrosion of reinforcement are those of the main factors which cause the deterioration of concrete structures. The objective of this study is to suggest an analytic model for the prediction of chloride penetration into carbonated concrete, in order to make up for the current codes. Carbonation depth model considering the moisture effect is validated by being compared with the test data and the analytic model on chloride penetration into carbonated concrete is developed. Finally, the corrosion-initiation time has been predicted by the present model, being compared with that by the current code equation. The comparison shows that the current code equation can underestimate the chloride penetration into carbonated concrete in marine atmospheric conditions.

  • Recently, many methods to evaluate the water content in concrete were developed. In this study, using a commercially avaliable equipment by the unit volume weight method, the water content in concrete was estimated when the moisture content in sand was changed. In order to evaluate the accuracy and the usefulness of the method, the designed water content and the measured water content were compared. The compressive strength of concrete with the variation of moisture content in sand was measured as well. As a result, it appears that in order to predict the water content in concrete, the adjustment coefficient of aggregate should be exactly estimated. It is shown that the equipment tends to underestimate the water content in concrete.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to analyze the performance degradation by timing jitters in the receivers of intensity modulation/direct detection digital optical communication systems where pulse-shaping filters are used to minimize intersymbol interference. The results obtained from the proposed analytical method show that conventional analytical methods underestimate the influence of timing jitters on the receiver performance. Using the proposed anlaytical method, we derive an analytic equation for approximated power penalty due to timing itters and obtain an exact power penalty by numerical analyses. Assuming Gaussian or uniform probability density function for timing jitters, we also show that assumption of Gaussian distribution for timing jitters yields more performance degration than that of uniform distribution.

  • Stochastic weather generators are commonly used to simulate time series of daily weather, especially precipitation amount. Recently, a generalized linear model (GLM) has been proposed as a convenient approach to fitting these weather generators. In this paper, a stochastic weather generator is considered to model the time series of daily precipitation at Seoul in South Korea. As a covariate, global temperature is introduced to relate long-term temporal scale predictor to short-term temporal predictands. One of the limitations of stochastic weather generators is a marked tendency to underestimate the observed interannual variance of monthly, seasonal, or annual total precipitation. To reduce this phenomenon, we incorporate time series of seasonal total precipitation in the GLM weather generator as covariates. It is veri ed that the addition of these covariates does not distort the performance of the weather generator in other respects.

  • We present the systematic variations of H$\beta$ index of simple stellar populations due to horizontal-branch (HB) stars. Most of the previous works have been done without careful considerations of HB stars. Since the Balmer line strengths are very sensitive to the temperature, including the HB stars are quite important. We found that the strength of H,6 index is strongly affected by HB stars, and hence the age estimation without careful consideration of the variation of HB morphology with metallicity and age would underestimate the ages of ellipticals.

  • New population synthesis models, with the effects of metallicity spread and the horizontal-branch (HB) morphology, provide a way to break the well-known age-metallicity degeneracy in the analysis of the integrated light of elliptical galaxies. Our models suggest that the far- UV radiation of these systems is dominated by a minority population of metal-poor, hot HB stars and their post-HB progeny, while the optical radiation is dominated by a metal-rich population. The systematic variation of UV upturn depends on the contribution from metal-poor, hot HB stars and their post-HB progeny, which in turn depends on the ages of old stellar populations in galaxies. Our result implies a prolonged epoch of galaxy formation, in the sense that more massive galaxies (in denser environments) formed first. Our models also suggest that the strenghth of H$\beta$ index is strongly affected by HB stars, and hence previous age estimation without detailed modeling of the HB would underestimate the ages of ellipticals by $\~$7 Gyr.

  • Densification behaviors of mixed metal powder under high temperature were investigated. Experimental data of mixed copper and tool steel powder with various volume fractions of Cu powder were obtained under hot isostatic pressing and hot pressing. By mixing the creep potentials of McMeeking and co-workers and of Abouaf and co-workers originally for pure powder, the mixed creep potentials with various volume fractions of Cu powder were employed in the constitutive models. The constitutive equations were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification of mixed powder under hot isostatic pressing and hot pressing. Finite element calculations by using the creep potentials of Abouaf and co-workers agreed reasonably well with experimental data, however, those by McMeeking and co-workers underestimate experimental data as observed in the case of pure metal powders.
