  • Recently polymer insulators are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymer insulators for transmission and distribution line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage(UHV) transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. In this paper, polymer line post insulator has been designed and investigated electric field distribution by FEM. Designed LP insulators have been tested as insulator performance test, such as power frequency voltage test, lightning impulse voltage test, artificial pollution test and flexural load test.

  • In this study, the Joint of 345kV OF $1C{\times}2000mm^2$ cable was developed to keep up with the trends that need higher-voltage & capacity underground transmission line. The type of joint developed was based on the two kinds of models that have had a good reliability internationally. The mechnic and electric characteristics of the sample specimen was managed in detail when it was manufactured and estimated. Especially, in order to prove the reliability of usage for 30 years, the method of long term aging test was studied. As a result of test, we knew that the joint developed had a good performance. From this study, it can be thought that future ultra-high voltage underground transmission line could be constructed by domestic technology.

  • This paper analyzes arc phenomena including the secondary arc's elongation in the Korean 765kV single transmission line (79km) between Sin-Ansung S/S and Sin-Gapyeong S/S, which will be installed in Korea in June 2006. In particular, both frequency independent and frequency dependent line models are compared to make our final decisions. As well, the significant simulation results are investigated by the EMTP program. As a result, there is no need of HSGS in the Korean 765kV single transmission line from both a practical and an economical point of view.

Seismic and collapse analysis of a UHV transmission tower-line system under cross-fault ground motions

  • An ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission system has the advantages of low circuitry loss, high bulk capacity and long-distance transmission capabilities over conventional transmission systems, but it is easier for this system to cross fault rupture zones and become damaged during earthquakes. This paper experimentally and numerically investigates the seismic responses and collapse failure of a UHV transmission tower-line system crossing a fault. A 1:25 reduced-scale model is constructed and tested by using shaking tables to evaluate the influence of the forward-directivity and fling-step effects on the responses of suspension-type towers. Furthermore, the collapse failure tests of the system under specific cross-fault scenarios are carried out. The corresponding finite element (FE) model is established in ABAQUS software and verified based on the Tian-Ma-Qu material model. The results reveal that the seismic responses of the transmission system under the cross-fault scenario are larger than those under the near-fault scenario, and the permanent ground displacements in the fling-step ground motions tend to magnify the seismic responses of the fault-crossing transmission system. The critical collapse peak ground acceleration (PGA), failure mode and weak position determined by the model experiment and numerical simulation are in relatively good agreement. The sequential failure of the members in Segments 4 and 5 leads to the collapse of the entire model, whereas other segments basically remain in the intact state.

  • Recently polymeric insulators and arresters are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymeric insulators for transmission line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage(UHV) transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. Polymeric insulator kind are a relatively new technology, but their expected life is still unknown. In this paper, the material property for polymeric insulating material such as silicone rubber and EPBM is investigated by cross-link time and the relation between tracking resistance and W resistance is analyzed by IEC 60587 and W aging experiment.

  • Nowadays as the power systems have been more complicated and have grown to ultra high voltage, it requires a accurate and high speed relaying scheme to improve the reliability and stability of power systems for a harmonious power supplying. For this purpose voltage and current have to be measured at the location of the protective device and the short circuit impedance must be determined. This paper presents the application methods and some results of digital distance relaying scheme which is based upon the theouy of real-time symmetrical components. Usually the symmetrical component have been used to solve the transient systems as well as the steady state systems under unbalanced systems. But, real-time symmetrical component frequently have not been applied to on-line control region of the large power system. We have tried to apply this method to deal with the various type of faults on artificial transmission line. And experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed techniques. Therefore, this study is expected that it is contributed to improve the reliability of power supplying, searching for the fault location rapidly and exactly in power system.

Polymer insulators for transmission line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. Polymer insulators are a relatively new technology, but their expected life is still unknown. Therefore these estimating technique are very important. Their life time is related to weathering and operating condition. Multi-aging test is requested because aging factor is occurred by multi-aging than unique aging. The aging test about polymer insulators have mainly carried out by IEC 61109. This paper presents multi-stress chamber experiments and tracking wheel test to examine the tracking and erosion performance of polymer insulator for transmission. Multi-stress testing is able to demonstrate deficiencies of polymer insulator materials and designs, including the nature of interfaces in insulation design. We have investigated IEC 61109 Annex C (5000h aging test) and CEA tracking wheel test as test methods of artificial accelerated aging. The aging degree of polymer insulator is estimated by leakage current, measurement of hydrophobicity degree, damage conditions of insulator surface, withstand voltage test etc.
