Objective: This study aimed to investigate important human factors that should be considered when developing ultra-high definition TVs by reviewing measurement methods and main characteristics of ultra-high definition displays. Background: Although much attention has been paid to high-definition displays, there have been few studies for systematically evaluating human factors. Method: In order to determine human factors to be considered in developing human-friendly displays, we reviewed subjective and objective measurement methods to figure out the current limitations and establish a guideline for developing human-centered ultra-high definition TVs. In doing so, pros and cons of both subjective and objective measurement methods for assessing humans factors were discussed and specific aspects of ultra-high definition displays were also investigated in the literature. Results: Hazardous effects such as visually-induced motion sickness, visual fatigue, and mental fatigue in the brain caused by undesirable TV viewing are induced by not only temporal decay of visual function but also cognitive load in processing sophisticated external information. There has been a growing evidence that individual differences in visual and cognitive ability to process external information can make contrary responses after exposing to the same viewing situation. A wide vision, ultra-high definition TVs provide, can has positive and negative influences on viewers depending on their individual characteristics. Conclusion: Integrated measurement methods capable of considering individual differences in human visual system are required to clearly determine potential effects of super-high vision displays with a wide view on humans. All of brainwaves, autonomic responses, eye functions, and psychological responses should be simultaneously examined and correlated. Application: The results obtained in this review are expected to be a guideline for determining optimized viewing factors of ultra-high definition displays and accelerating successful penetration of the next-generation displays into our daily life.
It has passed the era of Full High Definition Television (FHD) and ended the era of Ultra High Definition Television (UHD). We will talk about the problems caused by the difference in the number of pixels in the TVs and introduce a method to improve them. This method is a method of performing an interpolation method suitable for a given image with Weighted Essential Non-Oscillation (WENO). Thus, it is possible to reduce the distortion of the image and to ensure a better image quality. Therefore, if we use the WENO methodology, when we watch old video material on UHD TV, we can enjoy high definition of UHD TV without changing the number of pixels.

The ultra-high definition TV system nicknamed "Super Hi-Vision" is a television system with 4000-scanning-line video and 22.2 multichannel sound. NHK has been developing it with the aim of creating a broadcasting system conveying a strong sensation of presence. We believe that it is important to design the system by taking into account human factors such as human visual system characteristics. This paper describes the psychological and physiological experiments on the visual effects of "Super Hi-Vision".
This paper examines the potential of Ultra-High Definition TV (UD-TV) broadcasting transmission systems beyond HD-TV over cable channel. Firstly, we analyze the trend of TOV(Threshold of Visibility) by extending the OpenCable (J.83 Annex B) system 256QAM which is the standard of Korean and American cable television transmission to 1024QAM, and realize that the OpenCable 1024QAM has nearly 30% higher data rate than 256QAM at the expense of impractically higher TOV (Threshold of Visibility). To achieve practical TOV, we control code rates of inner convolutional coder and replace turbo coder in forward error correction (FEC) part, thereby analyzing the best performance of the OpenCable systems having conventional FEC. In that result, it is necessary to modify conventional FEC of the OpenCable system to achieve under 31.5dB TOV. Moreover we study the potential of UD-TV transmission via two or more TV channels, so called channel bonding, through the Shannon capacity in 6MHz channel and the relationship with next generation A/V codec technologies.

Passive optical networks (PONs) are the emerging solution for access networks since PONs provide high bandwidth. TDM ((time-division multiplexing) PON cannot support sufficient bandwidth for new broadband services such as UHD (ultra high-definition) IP TV, and VOD (video on demand). The solution is TWDM PON which is a mixture of WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) and TDM. This paper proposes a new MAC (media access control) protocol for TWDM PON.
This paper introduces the world's first programmable video-processing platform for the enhancement of the video quality of the 8K(7680x4320) UHD(Ultra High Definition) TV operating up to 60 frames per second. In order to support required computing capacity and memory bandwidth, the proposed platform implemented several key features such as symmetric multi-cluster architecture for parallel data processing, a ring-data path between the clusters for data pipelining and hardware accelerators for computing filter operations. The proposed platform based on RP(Reconfigurable Processor) processes video quality enhancement algorithms and handles effectively new UHD broadcasting standards and display panels.

Ultra-High Definition Television (U-HDTV) is a promising candidate for the next generation television. Since the U-HDTV video signal requires a huge amount of data, parallel implementation of the U-HDTV compression system is highly demanding. In the conventional parallel video codec, a video is divided into sub-sequences and the sub-sequences are independently encoded. In this paper, for efficient parallel processing, we propose a pipelined encoding structure which exploits cross-correlation among the sub-sequences. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed technique improves the coding efficiency and provides the sub-sequences of the balanced visual quality.
In accordance with 4K UHD(Ultra High Definition) LCD television's higher resolution and data expansion, LCD TV had to face problems such as increasing numbers of cables and tangible skews problems among cables. The V-by-One HS is a new interface technology in the path between the image processing IC and timing control (TCON) board. The variable speed from 600 Mbps to 3.75 Gbps effectively meets the requirements of various different pixel rates. In this paper, we use the V-by-One HS interface to illustrate our proposed simulation method of frequency resonance mode and PCB design approach to model the effects of signal integrity for high speed video signal using an IBIS models.
