  • The PD in GIS leads to a charge transfer and a voltage drop across the discharge area. They cannot be measure directly but we can measure electromagnetic wave made by PD. In generally, compared with VHF band, electromagnetic waves of UHF band have a low noise therefore, we can detect the real defect with several pC in GIS using UHF method. In this paper, the U-slot microstrip patch antenna for measuring PD signal in GIS is presented. the proposed UHF sensor are designed to have large band characteristics and unaffected structure for GIS operation.

  • In this paper two kinds of techniques were compared for localization of PD(partial discharge) in power transformer and more useful method was suggested. Both of them, the time of arrival and the energy content method, were tested in 154kV single phase experimental transformer using UHF signal measurement. The former was using the difference of arrival time of recorded signals from four UHF sensors, the latter was based on the energy content in frequency spectra of signals detected at all sensors.

  • We developed internal and external type sensor to measure ultra-high frequency (UHF) partial discharge (PD) in 170 kV gas-insulated switchgears (GIS). We also manufactured a PD-generator to verify and measure the detection sensitivity of those sensors. We measured the output power of the UHF PD sensors induced by PDs of 5 pC using the PD-generator. We measured UHF propagation loss of an 170 kV GIS for optimal arrangement of the sensors. We used swept UHF signal from a network analyzer into the GIS to measure the loss of various components of the GIS.

  • With changes in insulated defects, the environment, and so on, new partial discharge (PD) data are highly different from the original samples. It leads to a decrease in on-line recognition rate. The UHF signal and pulse current signal of four kinds of typical artificial defect models in gas insulated switchgear (GIS) are obtained simultaneously by experiment. The relationship map of ultra-high frequency (UHF) cumulative energy and its corresponding apparent discharge of four kinds of typical artificial defect models are plotted. UHF cumulative energy and its corresponding apparent discharge are used as inputs. The support vector machine (SVM) incremental method is constructed. Examples show that the PD SVM incremental method based on simulated annealing (SA) effectively speeds up the data update rate and improves the adaptability of the classifier compared with the original method, in that the total sample is constituted by the old and new data. The PD SVM incremental method is a better pattern recognition technology for PD on-line monitoring.

  • This paper describes the analysis of UHF signals taking place at partial discharges due to defects in GIS. To imitate the defects, two kinds of electrode were employed. One is to generate the PD due to corona discharge, and the other surface discharge. As a result, the magnitude of the UHF signals acquired from the discharges increased with the applied voltage. However, each frequency distribution trend at corona discharges and surface discharge was similar even though the applied voltage increased. Frequency distribution between corona discharge and surface discharge was clearly distinguish.

  • To detect the PD events, we have studied a fusion sensor, the UHF sensor and the single-walled carbon nanotube(SWNT) gas sensor. We are accustomed to the UHF sensor which have employed to detect the partial discharges in apparatus GIS-like. But the SWNT gas sense is a newly way proposed to detect the partial discharges. In this study, we monitored not only the changes of the electrical conductance of the SWNT sensors in responding to the PD events but also the signal of the UHF sensor at the same time with IEC 60270 standard method for reference on the partial discharge events.

  • This paper describes the analysis of the UHF signal characteristics due to the partial discharge sources which can exist in a GIS. For the experiment, a model GIS was made and 5 types of discharge source were created as follows; corona discharge, surface discharge, void discharge, discharge due to free particle, discharge from floating electrode. The frequency spectra and the phase characteristics of UHF signals were induced by UHF signal analysis. The results were quantified to systematically adapt to analyze the PD sources in the GIS and utilized as algorithm data based on the neural network for Back-Propagation Algorithm with a multi-layer structure. The perception rate of the constructed algorithm showed approximately 94[%] and 82[%] in learning and testing data, respectively.

  • Assessing the condition of air insulation by measuring electromagnetic wave generated in it by partial discharges gives warning of developing faults and breakdown which may give some bad effects to other thing concerned with it. Electromagnetic wave are taken from UHF antenna with 20k ~ 2GHz frequency range. The signal waveform and FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) results from UHF antenna for PD(partial discharge) generated from two different electrode(needle-plane, needle-needle) configurations are shown and it is processed by using PRPD($\Phi-q-n$ distribution) method. Cumulative pulse sequence during 100 period is compared with PRPD method. This also will show the possibility of making apparent distinction between two PD sources.

HPF Application Test for PD Detection of XLPE Power Cable (XLPE 전력케이블의 부분방전 검출을 위한 HPF 적용 시험)

  • In this paper, we developed HPF (high pass filter) consists of lumped LC components to decrease the noises that are detected in PD (partial discharge) measuring test, and adapted it to field test. We tested it under laboratory circumstances like the fields, and measured the phase change properties of detected signal in UHF sensor with Lemke Probe and oscilloscope (TDS-3054, Tektronix). As a result, we obtained available data showing the decrease of noises in the experiments with the developed HPF from the joint box of 22.9kV distribution line. The result can be adapted to prevent the degeneration of the XLPE power cable, and to observe and diagnosis the underground power transmission cable at the ultra-high voltage.
