A Study on the Research Support Service of College Libraries (대학도서관의 연구지원서비스에 관한 연구)

  • This research defines research support service, and compares the support service provided by college libraries in Korea and overseas. The findings showed that the frequency of college library service in Korean schools were low. Korean college libraries' services were mostly limited to the services of a normal library such as bibliographic education, full text service, and interlibrary loan service. To put it differently, Korean college libraries lacked information services on research ethics. Research spot services per research stage were mostly restricted to the data collection stage, and deficient elsewhere. On the other hand, college libraries in the U.S. were providing a platform for scholarly communication between researcher and scholars via websites.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide possible suggestions in order to promote online transmission service of digital works and the construction of digital libraries. To achieve this purpose, the definition, and characteristics of digital library were reviewed. And the current status of information service of digital libraries in Korea. Japan, and U. S. was examined. The regulations relating to online transmission in digital libraries on the copyright law revised in December 1999 were understood. As a result, this study suggested the establishment of center to manage the reproduction and online transmission of digital works collectively. And it also suggested the introduction of technical measures to protect copyright.

An Analysis on Curriculum of Library and Information Science in U.S. (미국 문헌정보학 교과과정 주제에 대한 분석 연구)

  • Since new issues and topics are emerging in the information and library science fields, diverse needs are identified to enhance the curriculum of library and information science education. This study investigated curriculum of library and information science in US and identified the topics of classes in the curriculum by the three aspects such as competency areas, scientific and technology category, and research fields. Consequently, topics related various information technology including system design and implement are the most popular topics in all analyses. Library and information center management and user service are also major topics of the curriculum.

User Education in Korean Libraries: Current Situation and Problems (한국 도서관계의 이용자교유 - 현황과 과제 -)

  • The purposes of this article are to explore the current situation and problems of user education in Korean libraries, and to seek some feasible solutions to establish user education as a library service. To the end, the main focus of discussion is on identifying both current situation and special features in user education of Korean libraries, as compared to those of the U.S. libraries. Also followed is a comparative discussion on the formal education systems to educate instruction librarians and the activities of professional associations to train instruction librarians between Korea and the U.S. The final suggestion is given regarding the obligations that Korean LIS scholars, professional library associations, and individual librarians should fulfill to establish user education as a healthy library service, which is suitable for Korean library situations.

An Analysis and Improvements of Loans and User Satisfaction for Smart Libraries: A Case of A Library in Incheon (스마트도서관 이용 및 만족도 분석과 활성화 방안 - 인천광역시 A도서관의 스마트도서관 사례연구 -)

  • As the number of smart libraries is continuously increasing, activation measures are necessary to expand user engagement and enhance service quality. This study analyzed the usage patterns of four smart libraries in A Library in Incheon, from June 2020 to December 2023. It also conducted user satisfaction surveys and question-and-answer sessions with a librarian. The number of books and loans increased, and two smart libraries in areas without public libraries showed high usage rates. Although users were satisfied with the smart libraries, they pointed out inconveniences such as the limited number of loan books and insufficient books. Consequently, it is suggested to improve user-centered service quality, continuous monitoring and evaluation, as well as active promotion.

Theory and practice of the interlibrary loan service (상호대차(相互貸償) 제도의 이론(理論)과 응용)

  • Interlibrary loan has been a very common library service in the developed countries but it is yet to be actualized formerly in Korea. As Korea is moving toward an information society where all the individual user's request in the library should be met, we need to understand, in detail, the theory and practice of interlibrary loan service. As various information technology has been applied to the libraries, the libraries became the open system. Thus, the libraries become more cooperative, form networks, and make interlibrary loan service available. This study is based on the following three hypothesis formulated from the systems theory. 1. If libraries cooperate each other and form some kind of networks by mail, computers or telecommunications, they become the open system. 2. If a library develops as the open system, interlibrary loan becomes available in the library. 3. If the interlibrary loan system works, the role of the librarians will be changed. The research was carried out by analyzing the various studies about interlibrary loan service and by examining the interlibrary loan systerns presently working in the U.S.. The conclusions are reached deductively from the data. Some of the terminology used are defined as follows: System: a network of interrelated procedures that are joined together to perform an activity or to accomplish a specific objective. It is, in effect, all the ingredient which make up the whole. Cooperation: Working together to benefit participant libraries. Network: a much more structured type of cooperation in which definite regions or areas are connected by electronic or other means to promote interlibrary loaning of materials, in-service traing & other sharing of resources. Interlibrary loan: the lending of books between libraries. The model of cooperation or networks was used to be (1) a star type, (2) a hieranchical type, (3) a distributed type or (4) the combination of aforementioned three. However, the development of the telecommunications and computers enables all kinds of libraires cooperate together. Interlibrary loan service starts with the needs of user's information. The information have to be logically accessed through bibliographies, computers, electronic mails and satellite communications. And the logical access requires the information technology and the libraries become cooperative. The physical access to the information follows next but only traditional method of mail and some commercial service are currently available for this purpose. Therefore, researches are needed to develop this physical access. If the libraries form networks, the microaspect of library changes accordingly as the macroaspect changes. If the libraries . cooperate to become one large world library, the librarians plan, organize, control library operations and report the results. And the librarians work inside and outside of the library to cooperate with other libraries. Only the cooperation of the libraries will enhance interlibrary loan and the Korean librarians have to be prepared to accept the new role of librarianship for the interlibrary loan service.

  • This article intends to locate the logical basis to apply bibliotherapy as a library service in Korean libraries. To the end, investigated and discussed are the historical relationship between bibliotherapy and RAS(readers' advisory service), and the theoretical base and practical experiences that enabled bibliotherapy to be practical in the U.S. library community. This article introduces a concept of 'therapeutic' RAS as a similar concept to 'developmental' bibliotherapy, and suggests the roles of a librarian as a therapist, based on the "Zones of Intervention" by Carol Kuhlthau.

  • As the ubiquitous society has come, users' demand for information and education from the library has changed and finally the necessity of change in the traditional information literacy that libraries have provided is on the rise. Based on the pre-judgement that women relatively have weak access to information in the knowledge information society and are in more special environment compared to other user groups, this study aimed to suggest u-Learning information literacy service for women. To this end, literature study, case analysis and questionnaire survey were conducted so that female users' demand for information and education was understood. Based on the results of these performances above, the requirements to develop programs for information literacy education service for female and contents in addition to models were suggested.

A Study on the Construction of Contents for Mobile Library Websites (도서관 모바일 웹사이트의 콘텐츠 구성에 관한 연구)

  • The information service of library is getting into a new paradigm as the smart phone usage increases. This study analyzes the contents reflected on the library mobile website to figure out the structural condition and features of the information. For this study, 26 academic libraries in U.S. are selected for an examination of their mobile websites, and the contents on the sites were analyzed. This study analyzed the most frequent type of contents provided in the mobile website. As a result, this study suggested the information structure and core contents of the mobile website in detail. The outcome of this study is expected to be a reference for building the mobile website of library.

  • With the advent of uniquitous life, changes of users' demands make a public library accomplish roles and functions of a complex service center providing information, education and culture service. As a multi-function center, a public library provides various services based on physical and digital space in ubiquitous environment. Information commons is a basement of physical space in an u-Library. Especially, with the advent of ubiquitous environment, design and use of physical space will be a critical issue for a public library to perform its role and function as a multiple complicated space. This study derives facilities and components for designing and implementing information commons in a public library as a physical space. To perform the goals, this study focuses on the newest trends and requirements through literature study, case study and survey. As a result, this study proposes components of facility and principles of design to implement information commons as a physical space in a public library.
