  • The Smoke Detect System is setup to extinguish early a fire on the large ship like as the cargo ship and Bulk Carrier at sea. The Addressable Type Smoke Detect System that keeps the advantages and dispenses with the disadvantages of the existing conventional type system is composed of only one electrical cords. In this paper, we make the Smoke Detect System of an addressable type and implement to control it using ATmega Micro-controller and evaluate it.

  • The purpose of this study was to carry out comparative analysis on the world major liner shipping companies' ship investment strategy using Fuzzy-AHP model. In this study, the ship investment factors were firstly selected by literature review and finally adopted them by in-depth interview with experts who had working experiences over 15 years in the field of shipping business. As suggested in the previous research, the liner shipping companies have been classified into four types such as 'ship investment irrelevant to market trend'(Type1), 'ship investment before market rise'(Type2), 'market decline after participation in excessive orders'(Type3), 'avoidance of ship investment during market rise'(Type4) and the comparative analysis were conducted among four ship investment types. According to the results of analysis, ship investment priority in Type1 was freight rates(0.132), price of used ship(0.121) and fleet(0.103). The priority in Type2 was freight rates(0.134), need for ship owner(0.113) and public funding(0.109). Type3 put its priority in freight rates(0.173), fleet(0.169) and the changes in international circumstances(0.121). Type4 considered freight rates(0.239), fleet(0.232) and oil price(0.150) as its priority.

  • In this paper, we studied the maneuvering performances of a ship with flapped rudder. PMM tests were carried out for a ship model with horn type rudder or flapped rudder. The Abkowitz's model was used as a basic mathematical model to simulate the maneuvering motions. The maneuvering motions of a ship with flapped rudder were compared with those of a ship with horn-type rudder. As a result, it was found that the turning ability of a ship with flapped rudder was remarkably improved.

  • Various kinds of ships(Cargo ship, Passenger ship, Training ship, Special ship etc.) are operated to transport cargo or passengers at sea in the world. Most of the important auxiliary machinery which is installed are fluid machinery in those ships. A large percentage of fluid machinery is pumps which are classified turbo and non-turbo type. While much previous research has focused on pumps for shore use, very little is known about ship's pump. In order to develop an understanding of ship's pump, we introduce common pumps used in every ship and special pumps based on ship's type. This exploratory study lays the groundwork for further investigation of ship's pumps

  • Two different sensors (here, KOMPSAT and RADARSAT) are considered for ship detection, and are used to delineate the detection performance for their data. The experiments are set for coastal regions of Mokpo Port and Ulsan Port and field experiments on board pilot boat are conducted to collect in situ ship validation information such as ship type and length. This paper introduce mainly the experiment result of ship detection by both RADARSAT SAR imagery and landbased RADAR data, operated by the local Authority of South Korea, so called vessel traffic system (VTS) radar. Fine imagery of Ulsan Port was acquired on June 19, 2004 and in-situ data such as wind speed and direction, taking pictures of ships and natural features were obtained aboard a pilot ship. North winds, with a maximum speed of 3.1 m/s were recorded. Ship's position, size and shape and natural features of breakwaters, oil pipeline and alongside ship were compared using SAR and VTS. It is shown that KOMPSAT/EOC has a good performance in the detection of a moving ship at a speed of 7 kts or more an hour that ship and its wake can be imaged. The detection capability of RADARSAT doesn't matter how fast ship is running and depends on a ship itself, e.g. its material, length and type. Our results indicate that SAR can be applicable to automated ship detection for a VTS and SAR combination service.

  • A model ship equipped with the Weis-Fogh type ship's propulsion mechanism, which is consisted of one wing in a squared channel, was constructed. Sailing and vibration tests of the model ship were performed with the opening angles in a pool. The results are summarized as follows. The thrust and the speed of model ship were the highest for the spring-type wing of which the opening angle is automatically controlled in one stroke. Moreover, these values were approximately reduced by 4% from $30^{\circ}$ opening angle to $15^{\circ}$ in order. The maximum amplitude and RMS values of the model ship were the lowest for the wing having the opening angle of $30^{\circ}$, but were the largest for spring-type wing. And in case of the same opening angle, these values were lower for the ship on sailing than that on stationary.

  • For an accurate on-line measurement of the ship's attitude the paper develops an intelligent sensing system which uses one servo-type accelerometer and two servo-type inclinometers appropriately located on the ship. By considering the dynamics of the servo-controlled rigid pendulums of the inclinometers, linear equations for the rolling and pitching of the ship are derived separately from each other. Moreover, one accelerometer is used for extracting the heaving signal. Through the introduction of linear dynamic models and the linear observation equations for the heaving, rolling and pitching, the on-line measurement of the three signals can be reduced to the state estimation of the linear dynamic systems. A bank of Kalman filters is adaptively used to achieve the on-line accurate state estimation and to overcome changes in parameters in the linear dynamic models.

  • Every ship might be exposed to collision, grounding and/or various accidents. They may make some underwater holes on the hull. An underwater damage would cause her loss of buoyancy, trim, and inclination. Although a ship has some provisions against these accidents, if the circumstance is serious, she would be sunk or upsetted. Because of varieties of type of accidents, one could not prepare all of them. Many subdivision could prevent them, but it is difficult to realize it due to rising costs. This paper deals with physical phenomena of sinkage and an application on box type ship, and some results are earned as follows; 1. sinkage speed up to the level of the damage hole is increased proportionally, and is decreased proportionally after filling the level. 2. the curve of draft shows cup type of second order polynomial up to the damage hole level, and shows cap type of second order polynomial after filling the level. 3. if damage occurs beneath half of the draft, changes of head and displacement, and sinking speed follow almost straight lines. 4. by careful observation, sinkage speed could be predicted.

  • Usually, domestic training ship's bridge was designed for safe navigation and efficient navigation training. In this paper, we grouped domestic training ship's bridge layouts into three classes such as "the front and the rear-type bridge layout", "the twin deck-type bridge layout", and "the single-type bridge layout" by layout type between main bridge and training bridge. Furthermore, we investigated how to operate navigation training according to the type of bridge layout through the questionnaire, and extracted merits and demerits of each bridge layout in combination of normal operation with navigation training at the same time. We presented new type of training ship's bridge model to improve demerits and to elevate merits.

  • There were no related papers to study about that training ship's bridge was designed for safety navigation and efficient navigation training. Therefore, at first, on this paper, we grouped domestic training ship's bridge layouts into three classes like as "the front and the rear-type bridge layout", "the twin deck-type bridge layout", and "the single-type bridge layout" by mutually layout type between main bridge and training bridge. Furthermore, we investigated working type of navigation training on each bridge layouts through the questionnaire, and extracted merits and demerits for each bridge layouts to be going on operation and training at the same time. At last, we presented new type training ship's bridge model to improve demerits and to elevate merits above mentioned.
