Steady flow of an ER (electro-rheological) fluid in a two-dimensional electrode channel is studied by using FEM. Hydrodynamic interactions between the particles and the fluid are calculated by solving the Navier-Stokes equation combined with the equation of motion for each particle, where the multi-body electrostatic interaction is described by using point-dipole model. Motion of the particles in the ER fluid is elucidated in conjunction with the mechanisms of the flow resistance and the increase of viscosity. The ER effects have been studied by varying the Mason number and volume fraction of particles. These parameters have an influence on the formation of the chains resulting in the changes of the fluid velocity and the effective viscosity of ER fluids.

The SMAC (Simplified Marker And Cell) algorithm is extended for an application to thermal non-equilibrium two-phase flows in light water nuclear reactors (LWRs). A two-fluid three-field model is adopted and a multi-dimensional unstructured grid is used for complicated geometries. The phase change and the time derivative terms appearing in the continuity equations are implemented implicitly in a pressure correction equation. The energy equations are decoupled from the momentum equations for faster convergence. The verification of the present numerical method was carried out against a set of test problems which includes the single and the two-phase flows. The results are also compared to those of the semi-implicit ICE method, where the energy equations are coupled with the momentum equation for pressure correction.

Recently, ocean nuclear reactors have received attention due to enhanced safety features. The movable and transportable characteristics distinguish ocean nuclear reactors from land-based nuclear reactors. Therefore, for safety/design analysis of the ocean reactor, the thermos-hydraulics must be investigated in the moving system. However, there are no studies reporting the general two-fluid equations that can be used for multi-dimensional simulations of two-phase flows in moving systems. This study is to systematically formulate the multi-dimensional two-fluid equations in the non-inertial frame of reference. To demonstrate the applicability of the formulated equations, we perform a total of six different simulations in 2D tanks with translational and/or rotational motions.

A "two-fluid" equation model has been applied for predicting gas-solid suspension flows through a Venturi tube. In the "two-fluid"equation model, the bulk motion of the particles is considered as a continuum whose governing equation is obtained by averaging the conservation equations over a volume and expressing the equations in differential forms. Closure of the time-mean equations is achieved by modeling the turbulent correlations with an extended mixing-length theory. Proposed closure model is found to aptly simulate the dependency of the static pressure drop on the particle size, flow rate and the loading ratio.d the loading ratio.

In this study, because of change in electromagnetic force, deformation of the free surface motion of a magnetic fluid is changed. Deformation of the free surface motion of a magnetic fluid for the change in electromagnetic force is discussed and carried out theoretically and experimentally on the basis of Rosensweig Ferrohydrodynamic Bernoulli Equation. Objective of this study explicates free surface motion by electromagnetic force and planes to designed controller. To control free surface of magnetic fluid, it embody designed two-dimensional free surface form of magnetic fluid. By using this characteristics, they applied to oscillator for surface control, flow control, boundary layer control. Strength of magnetic field and height of free surface of magnetic fluid measure as a hall-effect sensor. As performing height control of magnetic fluid, the result will be presented possibility of free surface deformation control.

In this study, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis system has been developed in order to evaluate the turbine cascade performance with blade structural deformation effect. Relative movement of the rotor with respect to stator is reflected by modeling independent two computational domains. To consider the deformed position of rotor airfoil, dynamic moving grid method is applied. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with one equation Spalart-Allmaras and two-equation SST $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence models are solved to predict unsteady fluid dynamic loads. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method with high artificial damping is used to compute the fluid-structure interaction problem. Cascade performance evaluations for different elastic axis positions are presented and compared each other. It is importantly shown that the predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of blade can show some deviations compared to the data generally computed from rigid blade configurations and the position of elastic axis also tend to give sensitive effect.
It had been disputed how to apply wall drag to the dispersed phase in the framework of the conventional two-fluid model for two-phase flows. Recently, Kim et al. [1] introduced the volume-averaged momentum equation based on the equation of a solid/fluid particle motion. They showed theoretically that for dispersed two-phase flows, the overall two-phase pressure drop by wall friction must be apportioned to each phase, in proportion to each phase fraction. In this study, the validity of the proposed wall drag model is demonstrated though one-dimensional (1D) simulations. In addition, it is shown that the existing form loss model incorrectly predicts the motion of the dispersed phase. A new form loss model is proposed to overcome that problem. The newly proposed form loss model is tested in the region covering the lower plenum and the core in a nuclear power plant. As a result, it is shown that the new models can correctly predict the relative velocity of the dispersed phase to the surrounding fluid velocity in the core with spacer grids.

A two-layer fluid with free surface is simulated in the time domain by a two-dimensional potential-based Numerical Wave Tank (NWT). The developed NWT is based on the boundary element method and a leap-frog time integration scheme. A whole domain scheme including interaction terms between two layers is applied to solve the boundary integral equation. The time histories of surface elevations on both fluid layers in the respective wave modes are verified with analytic results. The amplitude ratios of upper to lower elevation for various density ratios and water depths are also compared.
A two-dimensional finite difference numerical model was developed in order to simulate two-phase fluid flow in a single fracture. In the model, variation of viscosity with pressure and that of relative permeability with water saturation can be treated. For the numerical solution, IMPES method was used, from which the pressure and the saturation of water and gas were computed one by one. Seven cases of model test using parallel plates for a single fracture were performed in order to obtain the characteristic equation of relative permeability which would be used in the numerical model. it was difficult to match the characteristic curves of relative permeability from the model tests with the existing emperical equations, consequently a logistic equation was proposed. As the equation is composed of the parameters involving aperture size, it can be applied to any fracture.

In this Paper a dynamic behavior of a cracked cantilever pipe conveying fluid with the moving mass is presented. It has the results focused on the response characteristics. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The cracked section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. When the fluid velocity is constant, the influences of the crack severity, the position of the crack, the moving mass and its velocity, and the coupling of these factors on the tip-displacement of the cantilever pipe are depicted.
