Reclamation of closed dumping grounds is a potential solution to solve land scarce problems. Traditional geotechnical investigations of closed dumping grounds face some problems, such as the emission of hazardous liquids and gases, and the lack of ground information due to the discontinuity between two boreholes. Thus, noninvasive and continuous investigation methods are needed to supplement traditional geotechnical investigations. In this paper, two types of geophysical investigation methods, Seismic Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) and 2D Resistivity, were carried out to study noninvasive and continuous site investigations for dumping grounds. The two geophysical methods are able to profile the distribution of physical properties of the fill and original materials, by which the extent of the dumping ground can be found and some anomalies in the subsurface can be located. Boreholes were used to assist in locating the dumping material-ground interfaces. The results show that dumping material-ground interfaces obtained from the two geophysical methods are roughly consistent. Moreover, attempt is made in the paper to use the geophysical methods to classify the types of dumping materials. The results show that the classification of dumping materials using the geophysical methods follows the results of the manual sorting of the dumping materials from a borehole.
Liquid fossil fuel contaminated by water can cause trouble in the combustion processes and affect the endurance of a combustion system. Using an optical sensor to monitor the water content instantaneously in a fuel pipeline is an effective means of controlling the fuel quality in a combustion system. In two component liquid flows of oil and water, the flow pattern and characteristics of water droplets are changed with various flow conditions. Additionally, the light scattering of the optical sensor measuring the water content is also dependent on the flow patterns and droplet characteristics. Therefore, it is important to investigate the detailed behavior of water droplets in the pipeline of the fuel transportation system. In this study, the flow patterns and characteristics of water droplets in the turbulent pipe flow of two component liquids of gasoline and water were investigated using optical measurements. The dispersion of water droplets in the gasoline flow was visualized, and the size and velocity distributions of water droplets were simultaneously measured by the phase Doppler technique. The Reynolds number of the gasoline pipe flow varied in the range of $4{\times}10^{4}\;to\;1{\times}10^{3}$, and the water content varied in the range of 50 ppm to 300 ppm. The water droplets were spherical and dispersed homogeneously in all variables of this experiment. The velocity of water droplets was not dependent on the droplet size and the mean velocity of droplets was equal to that of the gasoline flow. The mean diameter of water droplets decreased and the number density increased with the Reynolds number of the gasoline flow.
In the kinetic theory of dense fluids the many-particle collision bracket integral is given in terms of a classical collision operator defined in the phase space. To find an algorithm to compute the collision bracket integrals, we revisit the eigenvalue problem of the Liouville operator and re-examine the method previously reported [Chem. Phys. 1977, 20, 93]. Then we apply the notion and concept of the eigenfunctions of the Liouville operator and knowledge acquired in the study of the eigenfunctions to cast collision bracket integrals into more convenient and suitable forms for numerical simulations. One of the alternative forms is given in the form of time correlation function. This form, on a further manipulation, assumes a form reminiscent of the Chapman- Enskog collision bracket integrals, but for dense gases and liquids as well as solids. In the dilute gas limit it would give rise precisely to the Chapman-Enskog collision bracket integrals for two-particle collision. The alternative forms obtained are more readily amenable to numerical simulation methods than the collision bracket integrals expressed in terms of a classical collision operator, which requires solution of classical Lippmann-Schwinger integral equations. This way, the aforementioned kinetic theory of dense fluids is made fully accessible by numerical computation/simulation methods, and the transport coefficients thereof are made computationally as accessible as those in the linear response theory.

In this study, we develop liquid density sensor by measuring of balanced position between gravity and bouyancy, corresponding to liquid density, using distance measuring by magnetostriction technology. For improvement of accuracy of liquid density sensor system. And we derive the related equation between liquid density and moving distance of density sensor, and make the calibration method for liquid density sensor by magnetostriction technology. Using fabricated liquid density sensing system and derived equation, have measured the density of several liquids. And compare it to measuring results using Oscillating U-tube type high accuracy density meter, having 0.000001 g/cc resolution. The deviation of results between two density measuring systems was less than 0.001 g/cc.
In this study, to quantitatively evaluate the strength characteristics of the inflatable liquid used for the recovery of soft ground or partial settlement, the inflatable liquids were prepared by dividing the inflatable capacity and the strength characteristics were analyzed according to the conditions. The experimental group was divided into two groups: relatively high expansion group and low expansion group. The specimens were prepared by controlling the volume of 10 ~ 30% of the maximum expansion volume, and the strength of the specimens were evaluated. The compressive strength of the high expansion group and low expansion group was about 2.1 times.
Flammable substances are used in laboratories and industrial process. The flash point (FP) is one of the most important physical properties used to determine the potential for characterizing the fire and explosion hazard of liquids. The FP data at 101.3 kPa were measured for the binary systems {toluene+ethylbenzene}, {methlycyclohenxane+ethylbenzene} and {n-heptane+ ethylbenzene}. The experiments were performed according to the standard test method (ASTM D 3278) using a SETA closed cup flash point tester. The measured FPs were compared with the values predicted using the following activity coefficient models: Wilson, Non-Random Two Liquid (NRTL), and UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC). The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower FP was less than 1.74 K.
Emulsions are mixture of immiscible liquids in which one is dispersed in all over the other. They have been applied to many applications including cosmetics, foods, drug delivery system (DDS), fine chemicals, and chemical separations. Especially, emulsion technology is one of the most useful technique to formulate cosmetics such as eye cream, foundation, and foam cleansing. In general, the emulsions can be generated by mechanical agitation of two immiscible fluids. However, the emulsions obtained by conventional method have limited in stability, monodispersity, and complicate process. We describe here preparation techniques of representative cosmetic emulsions such as liposome, liquid crystal emulsion, nanoemulsion, multiple emulsion, and pickering emulsion. Furthermore, various factors which can control the physical properties of each cosmetic emulsions are briefly discussed.
It is very important to classify explosion hazardous area (EHA) suitably and to use proper explosion-proof electric installations for facilities using flammable gases and liquids. In the past, various examples in the Notification of Ministry of Employment and Labor were referred to in classifying EHA. But, at present, many companies use the hypothetical volume in Korean Standards (KS). This study reviews the validity of EHA classification based on the hypothetical volume by comparing the calculated radii of EHA with those obtained by a consequence analysis program called PHAST and a mathematical approach in British Standards (BS). The radii of EHA by the hypothetical volume were found to be slightly larger than those by the other two methods. This was attributed to rather conservative uses of a safety factor(k) and a correction factor(f) for availability of ventilation in calculating the hypothetical volume. Since the differences are not so conspicuous, however, it is concluded that the hypothetical volume in KS is a valid means for the classification of EHA. This study also presents a table of the radii of EHA for easy reference by small-scale companies using city gas, C3-LPG and flammable liquid(toluene), respectively. The table consists of 25 leakage scenarios corresponding to combinations of 5 pipe(nozzle) sizes and 5 operating conditions for each flammable gas and liquid.

The antibacterial activities of thirty mushroom species belonging to Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes, cultivated on two liquid media, were evaluated against gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria by the disk diffusion method. All of the mushrooms, except Auriporia aurea, Fomes fomentarius, and Lyophyllum shimeji, showed different antibacterial activity levels—from 9.5 mm in diameter of the inhibition zone to full inhibition of growth of the test bacteria. The antibacterial activities of Crinipellis schevczenkovi, Hohenbuehelia myxotricha, Oxyporus obducens, and Spongipellis litschaueri were observed for the first time. The antibacterial potential of culture liquids of the investigated species was higher than that of their mycelia activity. Dependence of the intensity of antibacterial activity on the culture medium was shown. The antibacterial efficiency of the most active species (Lentinus edodes, Piptoporus betulinus, and Phellinus igniarius) was verified and compared with those of some commercial antibiotics and natural essential oils of Salvia and Eucalyptus. The culture liquid of Piptoporus betulinus, obtained after cultivation on glucose-peptone-yeast culture medium, is a potential substance for further creation of antibacterial products.
Tanks are used to store a wide variety of liquids such as oil, gasoline and water. It is reported that, a large number of tanks have been damaged during severe earthquakes. Therefore, understanding their behavior under earthquake is an important subject for structural engineers. In this paper, a comprehensive study is presented on dynamic response of tanks. A parametric study has been completed on the rectangular storage tanks with aid of finite element method (FEM). Various parameters are investigated, such as; liquid height, density and earthquake with different peak ground acceleration (PGA). When investigating these parameters, modal and time history method is used. Six different earthquake records are used for time history analysis. The analysis results show that when the PGA increases by 10.7 times, the maximum displacements, stress, sloshing and base shear increase by 11.4, 22.6, 5.46 and 17.8 times, respectively and when the liquid height increases by two times, the absolute maximum values of stress, displacements, base shear and sloshing increase 1.65, 2.04, 2.05 and 1.34. Furthermore, values of sloshing increase with decrease in density.
