  • Laser Transmission Joining (LTJ) of plastics is a process in which light of suitable wavelength is transmitted through a transparent substrate that is in contact with an absorbing one. In this paper, LTJ is investigated by preliminary experiments from the viewpoint of mechanical engineering. To understand transmitting characteristics of each polymer substrate, transmission rate, reflection rate and absorption coefficient of polymer are measured by using a laser power-meter. Characteristics of joining in the spot welding and seam welding are investigated by measuring the fracture load. Fracture load increases in accordance to the laser power and irradiation time. However, when the laser power is over 60W and irradiation time over 4seconds, fracture load decreases. This phenomenon is probably due to heat-softening of materials. Besides, cavities are generated at a joint by evaporation of water molecules, which can be suppressed by introduction of a gap between two substrates.

  • The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) has been used to convert thermal energy to mechanical energy or electricity. The available thermal energy could be waste heat, solar energy, geothermal energy, and so on. However, these kinds of thermal energies cannot be provided continuously. Hence, the ORC can be operated at the off-design point. In this case, the performance of the ORC could be worse because the components of the ORC system designed based on a design point can be mismatched with the output power obtained at the off-design point. In order to improve the performance at the off-design point, a few components were replaced including generator, bearing, load bank, shaft, pump and so on. Experiments were performed on the same facility without including other losses in the experiment. The experimental results were compared with the results obtained with the previous model, and they showed that the system efficiency of the ORC was greatly affected by the losses occurred on the components.

  • High temperature superconducting coated conductor has a structure of /< superconducting layer>//. The buffer layer consists of multi layer, and the architecture most widely used in RABiTS approach is CeO$_2$(cap layer)/YSZ(diffusion barrier layer)/CeO$_2$(seed layer). Evaporation technique is used for the CeO$_2$ layer and DC reactive sputtering technique is used for the YSZ layer, A chamber was set up specially for DC reactive sputtering, Detailed features are as following. A separator divided the chamber into two halves a sputtering chamber and a reaction chamber. The argon gas for sputtering target elements flows out of the cap of sputtering gun, and water vapor for reaction with depositing species spouts near the substrate. Turbo pump is connected with reaction chamber. High speed deposition of YSZ film could be achieved in the chamber. Detailed deposition conditions (temperature and partial pressure of reaction gas) were investigated for the rapid growth of high quality YSZ film.

  • The position sensors used in a magnetic bearing system are desirable to provide some degree of fault-tolerance as the rotor position is necessary for the feedback control to overcome the open-loop instability. In this paper, we propose an inductive position sensor that can cope with a partial fault in the sensor. The sensor has multiple poles which can be combined to sense the in-plane motion of the rotor. When a high-frequency voltage signal drives each pole of the sensor, the resulting current in the sensor coil contains information regarding the rotor position. The signal processing circuit of the sensor extracts this position information. In this paper, we used the magnetic circuit model of the sensor that shows the analytical relationship between the sensor output and the rotor motion. The multi-polar structure of the sensor makes it possible to introduce redundancy which can be exploited for fault-tolerant operation. The proposed sensor is applied to a magnetically levitated turbo-molecular vacuum pump. Experimental results validate the fault-tolerance algorithm.

  • This paper is for the combustion characteristics of gas generator which drive 1.5MW-class turbo pump and runs in fuel-rich combustion regime with LOx/kerosene as propellant. The outline of development procedure of real scale high pressure gas generator is introduced and the relation between O/F ratio and outlet temperature and the molecular weight and specific heat ratio of combustion gas are described. The relation between O/F ratio and temperature is newly obtained at higher pressure and the molecular weight and specific heat ratio is modified and their validity is confirmed by the mass relation equation.

  • A project where the TPUs(Turbo Pump Units) for 10tf-thrust oxygen/methane LRE (Liquid Rocket Engine) are under development is being implemented to include an experimental combustion chamber developed. In the process of it, we introduced the power-balanced engine cycles in order to substantiate concepts of the engine using the combinations of the propellants. Accordingly, the main engine parameters of nominal operating mode are resulted from the 1-Dcalculations and it is found that the regulators are needed for controlling the expected pressure levels in the characteristics of propellant mixture ratio and thrust supposing the regulator is set to analogue-typed one which is easy to develop. The technical requirements like the nominal flow rate, its deviations expected and the pressure difference In need helped the several main characteristics of regulators to be determine in this stage. Here, a dozen of deviation values in the main parameters related to engineoperation are taken into independent consideration and accepted to the results for additional regimes of the regulators. Finally, we can determine the scheme and the primary dimensions along with the calculation design of the spring acceptable for general configuration which can definitely forwarded to the autonomous tests of the aggregates, The obtained data in further will be used for successive refinement of operating mode of the engine.

  • The temperature of cryogenic propellant in the propellant tank increases during flight due to heat input from surroundings. The propellant which temperature rises up over the required condition of turbo-pump remains as unusable propellant at the end of flight. In this paper the estimation method of the heat transfer coefficient at the upper layer of cryogenic propellant was presented. The heat transfer mode at the propellant upper layer was considered as conduction. Temperature distributions near propellant surface obtained from heat transfer coefficient were compared with test data to show the possibility of this method.

  • One of the obstacles for a magnetic bearing to be used in the wide range of industrial applications is the failure modes associated with magnetic bearings, which we don't expect for conventional passive bearings. These failure modes include electric power outage, power amplifier faults, position sensor faults, and the malfunction of controllers. Fault-tolerant magnetic bearing systems have been proposed so that the system can operate in spite of some faults in the system. In this paper, we designed a fault-tolerant magnetic bearing system for a turbo-molecular vacuum pump. The system can cope with the actuator/amplifier faults which are the most common faults in a magnetic bearing system. We implemented the existing fault-tolerant algorithms to experimentally prove the adequacy of the algorithms for industrial applications. As it turns out, the system can operate even with three simultaneously failing poles out of eight actuator poles.

  • The numerical analysis for gas temperature of turbine blade surface has been performed to investigate development of temperature with various blade edge shape. Two different types of the turbine which one is "Sharp" edge and the other is "Round" edge was modeled. Computations have been carried out several turbine rotational speeds in the range from 0 to 10,000 rpm for the each types of turbine edge shape. As a result, the more rotational speed of turbine increased, the more turbine blade's temperature decreased. It is also found that the surface temperature of turbine blades for sharp type edge were lower than the round type edge.

  • An oxidizer tunnel-type pipe, which shall transport oxidizer from an oxidizer tank to a turbo-pump of an engine, studied is installed through a fuel tank located under an oxidizer tank. A tunnel-type pipe can save weight compared to a detour-type pipe, however may vary the temperature of fuel stored in a fuel tank because of a broad heat transfer area. Hence in this study the characteristics of main oxidizer pipe and thermal propagation from oxidizer to a fuel tank are monitored by a cryogenic performance test with a tunnel-type pipe. In addition, the possibility of adaptation of an oxidizer tunnel-type pipe to launcher system is also analyzed.
