Free and Ambient Vibration of Steel-Deck Truss Bridge (강합성 데크 트러스 보도교의 자유진동해석 및 상시진동실험에 관한 연구)

  • This study describes an analytical and experimental investigation of the pedestrian steel-deck truss bridge in the City of Rochester, New York, U.S.A. This investigation was undertaken to provide assurance that this important bridge continues to be functional for this use. An ambient vibration experiment on full-scale structures is a way of assessing the reliability of the various assumptions employed in the mathematical models used in analysis. It is also the most reliable way of determining the structural parameters of major importance in structural dynamics, such as the mode shapes and the associated natural frequencies. Pedestrian-induced vibrations have been measured on the bridge to determine the displacement and the vertical and transverse dynamic characteristics of the steel deck truss. In the analytical modeling, three-dimensional finite element analysis was developed and validated against the ambient tests.

Structural Performance of a New Truss Deckplate System with UHPC Infilled Top Chords in Construction Stage (UHPC 충전형 상현재를 활용한 트러스 데크플레이트 시스템 시공단계 구조성능 평가)

  • In this study, we propose a new truss deckplate system, which does not require temporary floor supports during construction, with ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) infilled top bars. The increased stiffness and strength of the proposed system were well retained as compared to those of the existing truss deckplate systems, thereby resulting in the reduction of maximum deflection at the span center. Four-point bending tests were performed on five specimens with a net span of 4.6 m to evaluate the structural performance of proposed system in the construction stage. In addition, the load-deflection curve was plotted for each specimen, and the effects of test parameters were analyzed. Further, a rigorous nonlinear three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed, and its results were compared with the test results. From the results, it was observed that the test specimens of the proposed system exhibited superior performance as compared to those of the existing one and also satisfied the serviceability requirement during construction provided by the Korea Building Code 2016.

  • Nodal displacements are referred to the Initial configuration in the total Lagrangian formulation and to the last converged configuration in the updated Lagrangian formulation. This research proposes a relative nodal displacement method to represent the position and orientation for a node in truss structures. Since the proposed method measures the relative nodal displacements relative to its adjacent nodal reference frame, they are still small for a truss structure undergoing large deformations for the small size elements. As a consequence, element formulations developed under the small deformation assumption are still valid fer structures undergoing large deformations, which significantly simplifies the equations of equilibrium. A structural system is represented by a graph to systematically develop the governing equations of equilibrium for general systems. A node and an element are represented by a node and an edge in graph representation, respectively. Closed loops are opened to form a spanning tree by cutting edges. Two computational sequences are defined in the graph representation. One is the forward path sequence that is used to recover the Cartesian nodal displacements from relative nodal displacements and traverses a graph from the base node towards the terminal nodes. The other is the backward path sequence that is used to recover the nodal forces in the relative coordinate system from the known nodal forces in the absolute coordinate system and traverses from the terminal nodes towards the base node. One closed loop structure undergoing large deformations is analyzed to demonstrate the efficiency and validity of the proposed method.

A Nonlinear Truss Finite Element Model for Structures with Negative Poisson Effect Accompanied by Tensile Buckling (인장 좌굴 현상을 수반하는 음의 포아송 효과를 가지는 구조물 해석을 위한 비선형 트러스 유한요소 모델)

  • In this study, a nonlinear truss finite element is developed to analyze structures with negative Poisson effect-induced tensile buckling. In general, the well-known buckling phenomenon is a stability problem under a compressive load, whereas tensile buckling occurs because of local compression caused by tension. It is not as well-known as classical buckling because it is a recent study. The mechanism of tensile buckling can be briefly explained from an energy standpoint. The nonlinear truss finite element with a torsional spring is formulated because the finite element has not been reported in the literature yet. The post-buckling analysis is then performed using the generalized displacement control method, which reveals that the torsional spring plays an important role in tensile buckling. Structures that mimic a negative Poisson effect can be constructed using such post-buckling behaviors, and one of the possible applications is a mechanical switch. The results obtained are compared to those of analytical solutions and commercial finite element analysis to assess the validity of the proposed finite element model. The numerical results show that the developed finite element model could be a viable option for the basic design of nonlinear structures with a negative Poisson effect.

  • Among the material handling system, EMS (Electric Monorail System), which is the facility of transferring the material hanging on truss, has the strength point of the maximum utilization of working space and the improvement of working environment including low-level noise generation. This paper will introduce the variable method of EMS rail analysis, which has the main role of supporting the whole material weight and guiding them with high-speed transportation, and, based on the analysis, the direction of optimization of the rail design be described. The rail with light-weight and high-strength contributes the reduction of the load of truss, the cost-down of rail production and the easy-installation on site.

Construction of Truss Bridge Database for 3-D Shape and Structural Analysis Information by using ISO10303 Application Protocols (ISO10303 응용프로토콜을 이용한 트러스교의 3차원 형상 및 해석정보 데이터베이스 구축)

  • A web-based information management system to share engineering data of truss bridge is developed through construction of standardized database of truss bridge. 3D shape information is stored in database according to AP 203 of STEP, and 3D visualization on the web is implemented by using the web 3D technology that helps users to understand geometrical shape of structures, directly. AP209 is used to store structural analysis information such as finite elements, material properties, and analysis result into relational database. Based on the developed database, a prototype of integrated information management system for truss bridge is developed, and it provides additional information such as specifications and inspection information related with shape object to end users.

Dynamic Characteristic of Truss Type Lift Gate by Model Tests (모형실험에 의한 트러스형 리프트 게이트의 진동 특성)

  • A model test is performed to investigate the dynamic behavior of truss type lift gate which is being constructed by the four major rivers project. The gate dimensioned 40 m in width, 9m in height is scaled with the ratio of 1:25 and is made of acryl panel and supplemented weight by lead in the concrete test flume dimensioned 1.2 m in width, 0.5 m in height and 30m in length. Firstly natural frequencies of the model gate are measured and compared with the numerical results for the calibration. The amplitudes of the vibration are measured under the different gate opening, upstream water level conditions. Also models with bottom angle $20^{\circ}$, $35^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$ are tested and compared to find out a proper shape of bottom structure which minimizes the gate vibration. These test results presents a basic data for the guide manuals of gate management and a design method to reduce the gate vibration of truss type lift gate.

  • Spatial structure is an appropriate shape that resists external force only with in-plane forte by reducing the influence of bending moment, and it maximizes the effectiveness of structure system. the spatial structure should be analyzed by nonlinear analysis regardless static and dynamic analysis because it accompanys large deflection for member. To analyze the spatial structure geometrical and material nonlinearity should be considered in the analysis. In this paper, a geometrically nonlinear finite element model for plane truss structures is developed, and material nonlinearity is also included in the analysis. Arc-length method is used to solve the nonlinear finite element model. It is found that the present analysis predicts accurate nonlinear behavior of plane truss.

  • Geometrical non-linearity due to the flexibility of cables must be considered efficiently in the dynamic analysis of cable structures. In this paper, formulation of tangent stiffness matrix of elastic catenary cable is derived by using relative nodal displacements, self-weight and unstressed cable length. Free vibration analysis of simply supported cable using elastic catenary cable elements is conducted and compared with that using truss elements. The result shows that elastic catenary cable elements are more compatible than truss elements in the case of analysis of cable structures. Furthermore, the characteristic of dynamic behaviors of cable structures by temporary unstability phenomenon is confirmed.

  • 본 논문은 공간구조의 기본 요소인 피라미드형 구조단위에 대한 해석과 포스트텐션 시험의 결과를 기술하였다. 시험과정 중에 관찰된 거동 특성을 분석하고 수치해석의 결과와 비교 검토하였으며 시험모델에 대한 미케니즘(Mechanism)을 기하학적 해법으로 확인하였다. 이 논문의 결과는 다 방향성을 가진 조인트 시스템(Mero Joint System)을 이용한 공간구조의 거동을 정확하게 예측할 수 있고 비교적 작은 포스트텐션력으로 공간구조의 형성과 시공이 가능함을 제안하고 있으며 공간구조가 미케니즘을 포함할 경우 큰 변형이 일어나므로 비선형 거동을 고려해야 함을 나타내고 있다.
