PURPOSE. The aim was to study the masking ability of high-translucency monolithic zirconia and provide guidance in selecting resin luting cements in order to mask discolored substrates. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 160 high-translucency zirconia specimens were divided into 32 groups depending on their thickness and shades. Using five shades of try-in paste, the specimens were luted onto the substrates (Co-Cr, precious-metal, opaque porcelain-sintered Co-Cr, opaque porcelain-sintered precious-metal, and 5M3-shade zirconia). All CIELAB color parameters were measured and statistically analyzed. RESULTS. Zirconia shade and thickness and try-in paste shade affected CIELAB color parameters (P=.000) in different substrates groups, and there were interactions among these factors (P=.000). All five try-in paste shades can be chosen to achieve ${\Delta}E$ values of zirconia with 1.2 - 1.5 mm for masking dark-tooth-like 5M3-shade and zirconia with 1.5 mm for masking precious-metal groups < 2.6. Only suitable try-in paste shades were used, can ${\Delta}E$ values that less than 2.6 be achieved when applied translucent monolithic zirconia with 0.7-1.0 mm for masking dark-tooth-like 5M3-shade and zirconia with 0.7 - 1.2 mm for masking precious-metal groups. CONCLUSION. Choosing suitable resin cement shades is necessary for high-translucency monolithic zirconia to achieve ideal masking ability (${\Delta}E$ < 2.6) on the dark-tooth.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the masking ability of three types of high translucent zirconia according to the various thicknesses and backgrounds. Materials and Methods: Using three types of high-translucency zirconia (Ceramill zolid fx white, Ceramill zolid ht+ white, Ceramill zolid ht+ preshade A2), 10 cylindrical specimens were fabricated in 10mm diameter and each with four thicknesses (0.6 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm), respectively by CAD/CAM method. The background was 10 mm in diameter and 10 mm in thickness. A1, A2, A3 flowable resin backgrounds, blue-colored core resin background, and Ni-Cr alloy background were prepared, and black, white backgrounds provided by the spectrophotometer manufacturer (x-rite, Koblach, Austria) were used. zirconia specimens and the background specimen were stacked to measure L, a*, b* with Spectrophotometer (Color i5, x-rite, Koblach, Austria) and the ΔE value with the other background is calculated. The Calculated mean ΔE values were compared based on perceptibility threshold 1.0 and acceptability threshold 3.7. Nonparametric tests such as Kruskal-Wallis test were performed to verify statistical significance (α = 0.05). Results: There was a significant difference in the mean ΔE value according to the zirconia type, background and thickness change (P = 0.000). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the pre-colored high-translucent zirconia can obtain the desired zirconia shade when it is restored on teeth, composite resins, and abutments except for the blue resin core.
The post core system has been used for reconstructon of severely damaged crown by caries or trauma. But problems such as crown exfoliation, post core fracture and root fracture have been reported. Ideal mechanical properies of the post require high fracture strength, high elastic limit and high resistance against fatigue and corrosion Modulus of elasticity of the post should be similar with that of dentine. Low hardness is also required for the convenience of post removal in failure. Furthermore, the post itself must be translucent for the esthetical purpose. Several types of the post have been developed to satisfy the criteria above mentioned. The purpose of this study was to find out the mechanical properties of quartz fiber post by comparing with those of gold post and zirconia post. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Maximal fracture strength and stiffness of quartz fiber post were similar with those of gold post and zirconia post. 2. Young's modulus and hardness of quartz fiber post were lower than those of gold post and zirconia post. Mechanical property of quartz fiber post against post fracture was similar with that of gold post and zirconia post. Mechanical property of quartz fiber post against root fracture was higher than that of gold post and zirconia post. Quartz fiber post could be removed easily due to low hardness.

Dental prosthesis translucency importantly contributes to aesthetic outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of drying time and zirconia coloring agent type on translucency. For the experiment, 90 circular specimens were fabricated for each zirconia block. Then, zirconia specimens were treated with a coloring agent for 180 seconds and dried for 0 seconds (undried), 30 seconds (intermediate dry), or 30 minutes (complete dry). Then, a specimen was placed on a black standard tile or a white standard tile, and using a standard D65 light source reflected was measured using the light removal method. A total of three repeated measurements were obtained per specimen. One-way ANOVA was used to compare and analyze the relationship between zirconia translucency and drying time. Zirconia and coloring liquid types were significantly associated with translucency (P < 0.001). Although no significant difference was observed with respect to drying time (P > 0.922), zirconia in the completely dried (30 minutes) state was more translucent.

PURPOSE. This study aimed to identify the effects of the sintering conditions of dental zirconia on the grain size and translucency. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten specimens of each of two commercial brands of zirconia (Lava and KaVo) were made and sintered under five different conditions. Microwave sintering (MS) and conventional sintering (CS) methods were used to fabricate zirconia specimens. The dwelling time was 20 minutes for MS and 20 minutes, 2, 10, and 40 hours for CS. The density and the grain size of the sintered zirconia blocks were measured. Total transmission measurements were taken using a spectrophotometer. Two-way analysis of variance model was used for the analysis and performed at a type-one error rate of 0.05. RESULTS. There was no significant difference in density between brands and sintering conditions. The mean grain size increased according to sintering conditions as follows: MS-20 min, CS-20 min, CS-2 hr, CS-10 hr, and CS-40 hr for both brands. The mean grain size ranged from 347-1,512 nm for Lava and 373-1,481 nm for KaVo. The mean light transmittance values of Lava and KaVo were 28.39-34.48% and 28.09-30.50%, respectively. CONCLUSION. Different sintering conditions resulted in differences in grain size and light transmittance. To obtain more translucent dental zirconia restorations, shorter sintering times should be considered.
Current trends in restorative dentistry focus on improving the esthetics and keeping the sound dental tissues as long as possible. The aims of this case report were to describe the successful outcome of cubic-phase zirconia laminate veneers for a patient with isolated microdontia by using a digital workflow, and to describe their clinical implications. A 15-year-old female who had isolated microdontia in combination with spacing visited Ajou University Dental Hospital for esthetic treatment. In this case, 6 maxillary anterior teeth were restored with cubic-phase zirconia laminate veneers without tooth structure removal by using a digital impression, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) procedures. At 6-month follow-up, no distinct mechanical and biological complications were detected and the prostheses exhibited satisfactory esthetics and functions. Due to its favorable tissue responses and enhanced translucency, cubic-phase zirconia can be a suitable strategy for a noninvasive esthetic approach.
The development of translucent zirconia enabled clinicians to choose a monolithic zirconia crown as one treatment modality in the posterior dentition. Careful occlusal adjustments are recommended for monolithic zirconia crowns because grinding zirconia inevitably causes phase transformation, which may deteriorate mechanical properties. intraoral scanners enable the clinician to scan and superimpose a complete tooth structure before preparation onto the prepared abutment. This technique helps to reproduce the original tooth form and occlusion of the patient. In this case report, prostheses were fabricated for patients with cracked or fractured tooth by applying intraoral scanner, Computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) and monolithic zirconia crown to reproduce the occlusion of original tooth and to minimize occlusal adjustment. The clinical results were satisfactory in both esthetic and functional aspects.
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatments on the shear bond strength of two types of zirconia (3-TZP and 5Y-PSZ) with resin cement. Materials and methods. Two different types of zirconia specimens with a fully sintered size of 14.0×14.0×2.0 mm3 were prepared, polished with 400, 600, and 800 grit silicon carbide paper, and buried in epoxy resin. They were classified into four groups each control, sandblasting, primer, and sandblasting & primer. Cylindrical resin adhered to the surface-treated zirconia with resin cement. It was stored in distilled water (37℃) for 24 hours, and a shear bond strength test was performed. The normality of the experimental group was confirmed with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov & Shapiro-Wilk test. The interaction and statistical difference were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA. A post-hoc analysis was performed using Dunnett T3. Results. As a result of two-way ANOVA, there was no significant difference in shear bonding strength between zirconia types (P > .05), but there was a significant correlation in the sandblasting, primer, and alumina sandblasting & primer group (P < .05). Dunnett T3 post-test showed that, regardless of the type of zirconia, shear bonding strength was sandblasting & primer > Primer > sandblasting > control group (P < .05). Conclusion. There was no difference in shear bond strength between the types of zirconia. The highest shear bond strength was shown when the mechanical and chemical treatments of the zirconia surface was performed simultaneously.
A conventional approach for the treatment of long-span edentulous areas is the use of removable dentures. However, placing implants in these areas results in superior functional outcomes by increasing the stability, support, and resistance of the prostheses and improving the masticatory efficiency. Treatment modalities utilizing implants can be further classified into either removable or fixed-type prostheses. Several factors such as the amount of alveolar bone resorption, inter-arch relationship, patient preferences, and socioeconomic status should be considered when determining the appropriate treatment approach. Monolithic zirconia has been considered a suitable material for implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis, because of the drastic improvement in its mechanical properties. It exhibits fewer incidences of fracture and chipping of the prostheses, and has greater bulk of material than metal-ceramic crowns and zirconia-veneered ceramics. Moreover, highly translucent monolithic zirconia is also available in the market, and its application is gradually increasing for anterior tooth rehabilitation. The present report describes a patient who underwent full-mouth rehabilitation with fixed dental prostheses (eight upper and three lower implant placements). All teeth, except bilateral mandibular canines and left mandibular first and second premolars, were extracted after the diagnosis of generalized chronic moderate-to-advanced periodontitis of the remaining teeth. The patient reported satisfactory esthetic and functional outcomes during the one-year follow-up visit.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of resin cement shade on the color of different novel ultratranslucent monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate veneer materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For a total of 40 specimens, flat cylindrical discs with a 9-mm diameter and 0.5-mm thickness were created using CAD/CAM technology. The specimens were divided into five groups according to their material (n = 8) (e.max, Prettau, Aidite, Shofu and Dima) using A1 shade. Resin discs with the same diameter and shade as the specimens served as tooth-colored substructures. Three shades (neutral, light and warm) of resin cement try-in pastes (Variolink Esthetic LC) were used as the luting cement material. The color of each material group was measured before and after cementation using the three cement shades, and the CIE L*a*b* coordinates were obtained with a spectrophotometer. Values for the translucency parameter (TP) and color change delta E (E) before (baseline) and after cementation of each specimen were determined. To compare differences among the material groups within each shade of cement and among various shades of cement within each material, the data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc testing. RESULTS. Color coordinates L*, a* and b* significantly changed after the application of try-in pastes relative to baseline values, with a noticeable decrease in lightness (L*) (P < .05). A significant color change (ΔE) was observed in all tested materials after cementation, with ΔE values exceeding 3.3 (P < .05). Although TP changed after cementation for most materials tested, these changes were not statistically significant (P > .05). Shofu and Dima ceramics showed the lowest TP values, while Aidite and Prettau showed the highest TP values. For e.max, translucency decreased after cementation with neutral and warm shades, and it significantly increased after cementation with a light shade. CONCLUSION. The shade of cement significantly altered the final color of the ceramic veneer material to a level above the threshold at which the clinical perception of color change occurred (> 3.3). The TP was not influenced by the cement shade. The translucency levels of the novel ultratranslucent multilayer monolithic zirconia ceramics Aidite and Prettau were higher than that of the lithium disilicate e.max material.
