  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has experienced tremendous economic and industrial growth in the petroleum, airline, maritime and construction sectors, especially since the discovery of oil reserves. Mass recruitment of low skilled or unskilled laborers from less-developed countries has been utilized to satisfy the manpower demands of these fast paced industrial developments. Such workforce recruitment has created an unusual populace demographic, with the total UAE population estimated at 8.3 million, composed of 950,000 Emiratis, with the remainder being multinational expatriate workers, with varying educational qualifications, work experience, religious beliefs, cultural practices, and native languages. These unique characteristics pose a challenge for health and safety professionals tasked with ensuring the UAE workforce adheres to specific occupational health and safety procedures. The paper discusses two case studies that employ a novel multimedia approach to raising health and safety awareness among a multinational workforce.

  • Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of parenting education programs (PEPs) for refugee and migrant parents. Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Relevant studies published from 2000 to 2020 were identified through a systematic search of six electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, RISS, KMBASE). A meta-analysis of the studies was then undertaken. Results: Of the 14,996 published works identified, 23 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria, and 19 studies were analyzed to estimate the effect sizes (standardized mean differences) of the PEPs using random-effect models. PEPs were effective for parenting efficacy (effect size [ES]=1.40; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-1.66), positive parenting behaviors (ES=0.51; 95% CI: 0.30-0.73), parent-child relationships (ES=0.38; 95% CI: 0.22-0.53), and parenting stress (ES=0.64; 95% CI: 0.50-0.79). There were statistically significant differences in the effect sizes of PEPs that included mothers only (ES=0.93), included children under 7 years of age(ES=0.91), did not include child participation (0.77), continued for 19 or more sessions (ES=0.80), and were analyzed in quasi-experimental studies (ES=0.86). The overall effect of publication bias was robust. Conclusion: PEPs were found to be effective at improving parenting efficacy, positive parenting behaviors, parent-child relationships, and parenting stress.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to construct and verify a path model for the influencing factors on occupational stress of Vietnamese migrant workers in Korea. Methods: Participants were 193 Vietnamese migrant workers recruited from Foreign Workers Support Centers. Data were collected by a self-administered survey with copies of a Questionnaire written in Vietnamese. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients and path analysis using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and Amos 20.0 program. Results: Length of residence, homeland friends' and Korean colleagues'supports, and acculturation have been found to have significant direct effects on occupational stress of Vietnamese migrant workers. Meanwhile, Length of residence, homeland friends', Korean colleagues', and their families' supports showed indirect effects on their occupational stress. What had the greatest direct effect on occupational stress of Vietnamese migrant workers was Korean colleagues' support. Conclusion: For reducing occupational stress of Vietnamese migrant workers, it is necessary to strengthen their Korean colleagues' supports in work places. In addition, community organizations should take strategies to enhance homeland friends' supports and to improve acculturation of Vietnamese migrant workers.

  • Purpose: This study aims to identify related factors of psychological well-being of migrant workers in Korea. Methods: The subjects were 138 migrant workers residing legally in K or B Cities. Data were collected from July 1 to August 31, 2018, using self-report structured questionnaires that were translated into English, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean, and were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression. Results: The most important influencing factors on the psychological well-being of migrant workers were social support (β=.36, p<.001), followed by perceived health status (β=.25, p=.001), education (β=-.18, p=.015), and spouse support (β=.16, p=.032). The overall explanatory power was 28.9%. Conclusion: In order to improve the psychological well-being of migrant workers, it is required to develop a nursing approach that may promote the social support, health status, and spouse support, and consider the educational level of migrant workers.

  • Purpose: This study aims to identify the mediating effect of health promoting behavior in the relationship between depression and health-related quality of life, and between social support and health-related quality of life among migrant workers. Methods: Data were collected from 152 migrant workers working at companies in K and B metropolitan cities. The study conducted a survey from August 1 to September 30, 2019, and used self-report structured questionnaires that were translated into English and Korean. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, simple and multiple regression, Baron and Kenny's method, and Sobel test. Results: Depression was significantly negatively correlated with social support (r=-.29, p<.001), health promoting behavior (r=-.30, p<.001) and health-related quality of life (r=-.44, p<.001). And social support was significantly positively correlated with health promoting behavior (r=.50, p<.001) and health-related quality of life (r=.44, p<.001). And health promoting behavior was significantly positively correlated with health-related quality of life (r=.51, p<.001). Furthermore health promoting behavior showed partial mediating effects in the relationship between depression and health-related quality of life (Z=3.26, p<.001), and showed partial mediating effects in the relationship between the social support and health-related quality of life (Z=3.98, p<.001). Conclusion: In this study, depression and social support were shown to mediate health promotion behavior to improve health-related quality of life. Therefore, in order to improve the health-related quality of life of migrant workers, it is necessary to focus on the health promotion behaviors, and effective strategies are needed to reduce depression, and support social support.

  • Purpose: This study developed and tested a hypothetical model of health promotion behavior on migrant workers based on the Health Promotion Model and the Health Literacy Skills Framework. Methods: Data were collected from 298 migrant workers in 9 regions across the country from December 2020 to March 2021. The exogenous variables were e-health literacy, occupational stress, acculturation, and social support. The endogenous variables were perceived benefits of action, self-efficacy, and health promotion behavior. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 25.0, AMOS 20.0, and R-4.0.3 program. Results: The model fit was appropriate. Social support had the most significant direct impact on the health promotion behavior of migrant workers. Perceived benefits of action and self-efficacy played a mediating role in the relationship among e-health literacy, social support, and health promotion behavior. Based on multi-group analysis, the migrant worker group with less than 5 years of residency had a more statistically significant effect on the relationship between perceived benefits of action and health promotion behavior than those with over 5 years. Conclusion: Providing social support as a critical administrative strategy to enhance the health promotion behavior of migrant workers is necessary. Furthermore, when developing an intervention program utilizing the internal mechanism between social support and health promotion behavior, a self-efficacy-enhancing strategy is considered to be more effective. Additionally, educating migrant workers with short-term residence of less than 5 years about the benefits of health behaviors is essential.
