Earthquakes damage roadway bridges and structures, resulting in significant impacts on transportation system Performance and regional economy. Seismic risk analysis (SRA) procedures establish retrofit priorities for vulnerable highway bridges. SRA procedures use average daily traffic volumes to determine the relative importance of a bridge. This research develops a cost-effective transportation network analysis (TAN) procedure for evaluating numerous traffic flow analyses in terms of the additional system cost due to failure. An important feature of the TNA Procedure is the use of an associative memory (AM) approach in the artificial intelligence held. A simple seven-zone network is developed and used to evaluate the TNA procedure. A subset of link failure system states is randomly selected to simulate synthetic post-earthquake network flows. The performance of different AM model is evaluated. Results from numerous link-failure scenarios demonstrate the applicability of the AM models to traffic flow estimation.

Rock drop obstacles on major roads in the border area in South Korea has been installed and operated to prevent and block the movement of enemy units. However, the increase in traffic volume due to the development of the border region causes many problems such as road traffic congestion due to rock drop, traffic safety, and impaired urban aesthetics. Therefore, this study aimed to provide guidelines for demolition and replacement facility installation for rock drop obstacles, which are differently applied to each unit, and to suggest the direction of the Ministry of National Defense's policy regarding maintenance cost for necessary rock drop obstacles required for operation. In this study, as part of a guideline study on the removal of rock drop obstacles and the installation of alternative facilities, a standard unit price was suggested for essential rock drop obstacles, so as to be used as judgment data when deciding whether to remove rock drop obstacles.

One of the important issues for multimedia communications over ATM netowrks is efficient use of net-work resources since transmitting video at low cost requires high utilization of channel bandwidth. In this paper, we propose an effective bandwidth estimation scheme for MPEG sources in ATM networks. It has been known difficult to allocate effective transmission bandwidth to MPEG sources due to its bursty charactersitics. The MPEG traffic stream can bemodeled using five traffic parameters:service rate, burst load ratio, interburst load ratio, burst period, and interburst period. Using these parameters, a transmission bandwidth for each source can be estimated, and the estimated bandwidth is applied synchronously to reduce the queue size in a buffer. For a simple network modelof a high speed link that multiplexes a number of virtual-circuit connections, simulations on adaptive bandwidth allocation were performed, and the results show that the queueing delay is significantly reduced, when compared to a fixed bandwidth allocation.

Network performance measure has been more and more important in transportation sector because traffic congestion has been steadily increasing in urban area. VKT is defined a sum of traveled distances of whole vehicles on the road network and one of the most important measure of effectiveness (MOE) for network performance measure. This paper aims to propose a methodology for estimating VKT and to apply it to calculate VKT in 6 major cities in Korea. We calculate VKT in 6 major cities by estimating traffic volumes on the uncollected road sections using regression kriging. It is expected that the proposed methodology can be applied various cities.

In this paper, an enhanced QoS multicast routing scheduling scheme is proposed to adapt to a dynamic mobile traffic condition for wireless mesh networks (WMNs). It handles the network QoS by controlling the delay constraints for multimedia applications. The group size will be controlled according to both the current network state and QoS requirements. The dynamic reconstruction of QoS multicast tree can be obtained from preprocessing with both the partial multicast routing scheme and the traffic estimation. Performance evaluation of the proposed scheme is carried out on randomly generated graph derived from the wireless mesh network, by choosing the optimal value related to the appropriate delay bounds. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve the performance of QoS multicast routing for WMNs.
Until recently, we use only weekly and monthly adjustment factors in order to estimate the AADT. By the way. we can suppose that the traffic is time series data related to flow of time. So we tried to analyse traffic patterns using time series analysis and apply them to estimate the AADT. We could divide traffic patterns into trend, cyclic variation, seasonal variation and irregular variation like as time series data. Also, in order to reduce random error components, we have looked for the weather conditions as an influential factor. There are many weather conditions such as rainfalls, but, temperatures, and sunshine hours among others but we selected rainfalls and lowest temperatures. And then, we have estimated the AADT using time series factors. To compare the results of, we have applied both irregular variation joined to weather factors and that not joined to. RMSE and U-test were opted at methods to appreciate results of AADT estimation.
Information collection systems and applications in a ubiquitous environment has emerged as a leading issue in transportation and logistics. A productive application example is a traffic information collection system based on probe vehicles and wireless communication technology. Estimation of hourly OD pairs using probe OD data is a possible target. Since probe OD data consists of sample OD pairs, which vary over time and space, computation of sample rates of OD pairs and expansion of sample OD pairs into static OD pairs is required. In this paper, the authors proposed a method to estimate sample OD data with probe data in Jeju City and expand those into static OD data. Mean absolute percentage difference (MAPD) error between observed traffic volume and assigned traffic volume was about 22.9%. After removing abnormal data, MAPD error improved to 17.6%. Development of static OD estimation methods using probe vehicle data in a real environment is considered the main contribution of this paper.
This study estimates the expected number of accidents in Kyungbuk Province to capitalize on experience gained from four years of accident history using the Empirical Bayes (EB) Method. The number of accidents of each site in Kyungbuk Province is recalculated using the Equivalent Property Damage Only (EPDO) method to reflect the severities of the accidents. A cluster analysis is performed to determine similar sites and a unique Safety Performance Function (SPF) is established for each site. The overdispersion parameter is built to correct the difference between the actual number of accidents and the underlying probability distribution. To adjust for varying traffic characteristics of each site, a relative weight is applied and eventually estimates the expected number of accidents. The results show that the highest accident sites are Kimcheon, Youngcheon, and Chilgok, but on the other hand the lowest is Gunwi.

This study explored an approach to estimate a flow-density diagram(FD) on a link in highway traffic environment by utilizing probe vehicles' time headway records. To study empirical flow-density diagram(EFD), the probe vehicles with vision sensors were recruited for collecting driving records for nine months and the vision sensor data pre-processing and GIS-based map matching were implemented. Then, we examined the new EFDs to evaluate validity with reference diagrams which is derived from loop detection traffic data. The probability distributions of time headway and distance headway as well as standard deviation of flow and density were utilized in examination. As a result, it turned out that the main factors for estimation errors are the limited number of probe vehicles and bias of flow status. We finally suggest a method to improve the accuracy of EFD model.

u-T (ubiquitous transportation) environment can be envisioned as an advanced version of ITS environment and be expected to provide more advanced transportation service in a ubiquitous manner. As a basic necessity to measure traffic flow in both environments, a flow estimation method was proposed. Flows have been measured in existing ITS and in a new u-T environments and some differences were investigated using simulation technique. In the interrupted traffic situation, the flow rate of u-T is 3.58% higher than that in ITS environment. Both MARE and MAE, which were used as measure of effectiveness, in u-T were better since the results are 31.4% and 31.1% lower than in ITS, respectively. Besides the equality coefficient in u-T was 1.9% higher than that in ITS. Such being the case, the flow rate measured in u-T using U-TSN is more reliable and can be expected to be successfully used for transportation system design or traffic operation areas.
