Pine needles are known as a traditional medicine and their ingestion has been shown to be beneficial to human beings. Following induction of the neoplastic process in rats by azoxymethane (AOM), we determined the effects of pine needle supplementation on colon carcinogenesis and on antioxidant systems in the blood and liver. Five week old male Fisher 344 rats were injected with AOM (15 mg/kg) once a week for two weeks. After the second injection, 18 rats were randomly assigned into two groups and were fed a casein-based high-fat diet (120 g fat and 1 g cholesterol/kg diet) with or without pine needle powder (10%w/w). After 6 weeks, rats receiving pine needle powder showed a 40% lower incidence of the number of colonic preneoplastic lesions (aberrant crypts) and a 52% lower incidence of aberrant crypt foci (p<0.01). A significantly elevated level of erythrocyte catalase activity was observed in the pine needle supplemented group (17.4$\pm$1.1 vs. 24.5$\pm$1.5, p<0.01). Pine needle supplementation also increased liver glutathione peroxidase activity (7.5$\pm$0.6 vs. 14.6$\pm$0.6, p<0.01). Other antioxidant parameters such as erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase, liver catalase activity, and plasma total antioxidant potential (TRAP), showed no statistical differences between the two groups. Our data demonstrate that pine needle supplementation improves the antioxidant system and suppresses the formation of colonic preneoplastic lesions in AOM-treated rats. This result provides additional insights into the chemo-preventative properties of pine needles.
Least squares (LS) regression is a classic method for regression that is optimal under assumptions of regression and usual observations. However, the presence of unusual data in the LS method leads to seriously distorted estimates. Therefore, various robust estimation methods are proposed to circumvent the limitations of traditional LS regression. Among these, there are M-estimators based on maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), L-estimators based on linear combinations of order statistics and R-estimators based on a linear combinations of the ordered residuals. In this paper, robust regression estimators with high breakdown point and/or with high efficiency are compared under several simulated situations. The paper analyses and compares distributions of estimates as well as relative efficiencies calculated from mean squared errors (MSE) in the simulation study. We conclude that MM-estimators or GR-estimators are a good choice for the real data application.
A machine vision system (MVS) is a computer system that utilizes one or more image-capturing devices to provide image data for analysis and interpretation. Recently there have been a number of industrial- and medical-device applications where control charts have been proposed for use with image data. The use of image-based control charting is somewhat different from traditional control charting applications, and these differences can be attributed to several factors, such as the type of data monitored and how the control charts are applied. In this paper, we investigate the adjustment effect of image size and region of interest (ROI) size, when we use control charts to monitor grayscale image data in industry.
Limitations on human and material resources make it is difficult to conduct Ammunition Stockpile Reliability Program (ASRP) tasks for the entire ammunition. Stockpile ammunition life prediction studies can contribute to efficient ASRP tasks. This study assess the shelf-life of ammunition, using survival analysis based on ASRP results for 60mm and 81mm mortar ammunition from 2003 to 2016. Traditional assessments often use solely storage duration as the only main independent variable; however, this assessment used other factors such as ammunition magazine shape and weather factors with the stockpile shelf-life as independent variables to conduct a Cox's proportional hazard model analysis. This was then followed by an assessment of ammunition magazine type, maximum temperature and rainfall factors influence on the shelf-life of 60mm and 81mm mortar ammunition. As a result, the type of ammunition magazine, maximum temperature and the rainfall influence the shelf-life of 60mm and 81mm mortar ammunition.
When a financial time series consists of daily (closing) returns, traditional volatility models such as autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) and generalized ARCH (GARCH) are useful to figure out daily volatilities. With high frequency returns in a day, one may adopt various multivariate GARCH techniques (MGARCH) (Tsay, Multivariate Time Series Analysis With R and Financial Application, John Wiley, 2014) to obtain intraday volatilities as long as the high frequency is moderate. When it comes to the ultra high frequency (UHF) case (e.g., one minute prices are available everyday), a new model needs to be developed to suit UHF time series in order to figure out continuous time intraday-volatilities. Aue et al. (Journal of Time Series Analysis, 38, 3-21; 2017) proposed functional GARCH (fGARCH) to analyze functional volatilities based on UHF data. This article introduces fGARCH to the readers and illustrates how to estimate fGARCH equations using UHF data of KOSPI and Hyundai motor company.
A cross-sectional survey was undertaken to identify risk factors and clinical signs associated with parasitic helminth infections of cattle in Mymensignh district of Bangladesh. A nonrandom convenience sampling method was used to select 138 animals from 40 farmers/herds. The eggs per gram of faeces (epg) for nematodes and trematodes were determined by McMaster and Stoll's methods respectively. Animal-level and herd-level data were recorded by means of a questionnaire. Multi-collinearity amongst explanatory variables were assessed using $2{\times}2{\times}\;X^2$ test and one variable in a pair was dropped if $P{\leq}0.05$ formultiple logistic regression models. Association study between outcome and explanatory variables was conducted using classification tree, random forests and multiple logistic regression. A positive epg was considered as infected. Analyses were performed using $STATA^{(R)}$, version 8.0/Intercooled and $R^{(R)}$, Version 2.3.0. Seventy eight percent of the cattle were found to be infected with at least one type of helminth. Twenty four pairs of combinations of explanatory variables showed significant associations. Male animals (OR=3.3, P=.006, 95% CI=1.4, 7.7) were associated with significantly increased prevalence of nematode infection. Female cattle of the study area are mostly cross-breed, kept indoor, fed relatively good diet and not used for draught purpose. Males are used for draught purpose thereby more exposed to nematode infective stage and provided with relatively poor diet. So stressed male cattle may become more susceptible to nematode infection. All of the three statistical techniques selected gender and lumen motility as most important variables in association with nematode infection in cattle. The result of this survey can only be extrapolated to the periurban cattle population of traditional management system.
Characteristics of organic matters (OM) in wastewater and the removal efficiencies were investigated using the influent and the effluent samples collected from 21 wastewater treatment plants. The OM characteristics investigated included biodegradability, humic content, specific UV absorbance (SUVA), the distribution percentage of refractory OM (R-OM), and synchronous fluorescence spectra. The types of wastewater (sewage, livestock waste/night soils, industrial waste) were easily distinguished by comparing the synchronous fluorescence spectra of the influent wastewater. The prominent peak of protein-like fluorescence (PLF) was observed for livestock waste/night soils whereas sewage exhibited a unique fluorescence peak at a wavelength of 370 nm. Irrespective of the wastewater types, the distribution percentage of R-OM increased from the influent to the effluent. Livestock waste/night soils showed the highest removal efficiency among all the three types of wastewater. There was no statistical difference of the removal efficiency between a traditional activated sludge and biological advanced treatment processes. Removal efficiency based on dissolved organic carbon DOC presented good correlations with the distribution percentage of R-OM and fulvic-like fluorescence (FLF) of the influent. The prediction for DOC removal efficiency was improved by using multiple regression analyses based on some selected OM characteristics and mixed liquid suspended solid (MLSS).

Alkaline peroxide bleaching of (chemi) mechanical pulp is a very complicated system where various process factors affect the bleaching performance and pulp properties. Traditional on-factor-at a time method is ineffective and costly in finding the optimal bleaching conditions. In this study statistical experimental methods which include three steps. I. e. screening, response surface modeling and optimization, were used to find the conditions for maximal brightness development during one stage alkaline peroxide bleaching of TMP which had an initial brightness of 54.5% Elerpho. The TMP was pretreated with EDTA(0.5% on O. D. pulp. consistency, $30^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes) and bleached in a 2L Mark V Quantum Reactor at 750rpm, 7.5% of bleaching consistency and with 0.05% magnesium sulfate addition. The ranges of other factors studied were 1~5% hydrogen peroxide on O. D plup, 1~4% sodium hydroxide on O. D pulp and 1~4% sodium silicate on O. D pulp, reaction temperature 50~$90^{\circ}C$ and reaction time 40~180minutes. A models with good predictability was established and the maximal brightness after one stage bleaching was found to be 70% Elerpho at $50^{\circ}C$, 50 minutes 5% hydrogen peroxide on O. D. pulp 3.2~3.4% sodium hydroxide on O. D. pulp 3.2~3.4% sodium hydroxide on O. D pulp and 4% silicate on O. D pulp. However further studies on other pulp properties such as strength and brightness stability shall be carried out in order to find out the optimal bleaching conditions.

The purpose of this study is to classify debris flow hazard zones in urbanized areas using multivariate statistical analyses and to suggest customized management strategies to each areal type. Using field survey data set in Seoul, 49 sample debris hazard zones are selected. Clustering and discriminant analyses show that debris flow hazard zones are classified into two types. Surrounding land use and land slope are major factors influencing to the categorization. The results suggest that, by considering the characteristics of each areal type, more customized management strategies for debris flow hazard are necessary. Particularly, in addition to traditional structural measures, non-structural measures including land use and development control for downstream built-up areas should be emphasized in urbanized areas to mitigate human and property damages from debris flow hazard more fundamentally.

The purpose of the study was to explore the potential of the Social Network Analysis as an analytical tool for scientific investigation of learner-learner, or learner-tutor interaction within an e-Learning environment. Theoretical and methodological implication of the Social Network Analysis had been discussed. Following theoretical analysis, an exploratory empirical study was conducted to test statistical correlation between traditional performance measures such as achievement and team contribution index, and the centrality measure, one of the many quantitative measures the Social Network Analysis provides. Results indicate the centrality measure was correlated with the higher order learning performance and peer-evaluated contribution indices. An interpretation of the results and their implication to instructional design theory and practices were provided along with some suggestions for future research.
