In this study, we applied terahertz imaging technology to three Korean modern oil paintings ('Boy,' 'Girl,' and 'Hyehwadong Landscape'); investigated the types of inner layer information in the pictures that can be extracted with terahertz imaging technology; and analyzed the conditions for extracting them. The biggest problem in the terahertz imaging analysis we encountered was the image distortion caused by the change of the distance between the target surface and the terahertz detector, depending on the surface curvature of the target paintings. We then developed a 'working distance maintaining device' to solve this problem. As a result, the terahertz imaging technique was used to identify the base material characteristics and any patterns of damage inside, and presented the optimal conditions for identifying each characteristic. In addition, it was useful to employ the terahertz frequency-division image to check the characteristics of the background materials. To confirm coloring techniques such as brush strokes, it is effective to compare the maximum reflection peak image with the cross-section image; and to detect damage information inside the paintings that cannot be observed on the surface, to compare the cross-section image with the frequency-division image. On the other hand, according to the terahertz imaging analysis of the oil paintings, the internal structural damage marks of 'Boy' and 'Girl' were confirmed, and the artist's painting style was confirmed in 'Hyehwadong Landscape.' The above results are expected to be useful for the analysis and diagnosis of Korean modern oil paintings for their preservation.
Volatile components of six commercial $sauces(A{\sim}F)$ and $\hat{O}yuk-jang$(G, H), a Korean traditional fermented sauce, were analyzed by electronic nose based on GC with surface acoustic wave(SAW) sensor. The obtained data were used for pattern recognition and a visual pattern called a $VaporPrint^{TM}$, derived from the frequency and chromatogram of the GC-SAW sensor. Volatile components of sauces and $\hat{O}yuk-jang$ were well discriminated with the direct use of $VaporPrint^{TM}$. Commercial sauces and $\hat{O}yuk-jang$ showed different volatile patterns, respectively, due to different major material, which meju, beef extract, pickled anchovies, and Katsuobushi were used. Volatile components of Oyuk-jang were decreased drastically during the fermentation time. After boiling $\hat{O}yuk-jang$, new several peaks were found. The responses by electronic nose were used for principal component analysis. The PCA plot showed that volatile components pattern were well discriminated by first principal component score(proportion: 96.8%), and first principal component score of $\hat{O}yuk-jang$ was between soy sauce of the liquid extracted from beef and sauce of pickled anchovies.
This study examines processes of cultural introductions and transformations among Korea, China and Japan via focuses on the formative characteristics of nasori(納曾利) masks belonging to komagaku (高麗樂), part of bugaku (舞樂), a Japanese court dance and music. Previous studies of traditional masks in East Asia focus on their dramatic characters and entertaining aspects. On the contrary, it approaches to their origins through the formative characteristics of komagaku nasori masks. Prince of Lanling, the representative togaku passed to Japan, and komagaku nasori perform a pair of toubu (答舞). One formative characteristic between Prince of Lanling and nasori masks is a dangling jaw (吊り顎). Masks having 'he' (へ)-shaped eyes like Japan's okina (翁) masks are characterized by a division (切顎) between the face and jaw, which is as same as the Korean masks. Other common grounds between Prince of Lanling and nasori masks are grotesque ghost faces and concentric double-circled eyes with their outlines painted gold. Concentric double-circled eyes prove that they spread to broader areas before the age of togaku and developed into a variety of divine-animal mask patterns. That Korean masks and nasori masks both have concentric double-circled eyes and dangling jaws is a significant starting point in studying the origin of traditional performing art in East Asia. Japan's bugaku has been passed down in shrines as part of folk religion. However, there exist in Korea no records or examples related to komagaku nasori masks introduced to Japan. This study provides some clues to comparison between Korean masks and komagaku nasori masks by focusing on the formative characteristics of the latter. The researcher suggests a new perspective to nasori mask dance by re-examining earlier Korean studies of the introduction of Daemyeonmu of Prince of Lanling to Japan through Shilla and the assumption of Nasori as Shilla music.
It has generally been accepted that quality of ginseng should be determined not by the content of a single component but by composition and balance of total active principles. However, there still can be an exception with a product in which a given ginsenoside is used for the treatment of a specific disease. Although ginsenosides have been regarded to be major active components of ginseng and employed as index components for the quality control, it does not consistent with the traditional concept on ginseng quality creterion; main root has been more highly appreciated than the lateral or fine root. Content of ginsenosides in the lateral or fine root is much higher than that in main root. However, the ratio of protopanaxadiol (PD) and protopanaxatriol (PT) saponins existing in various part of ginseng root is greatly different. The ratio of PD/PT saponins in main root is well balanced but the thinner the root is the higher the ratio. Thus far, a total of 34 different kinds of ginsenosides have been isolated from Korean (red) ginseng, and their pharmacological activities were elucidated partly. Interestingly, different ginsenoside shows similar or contrary effects to each other in biological systems, thus indicating the significance of absolute content of single ginsenoside as well as compositional patterns of each ginsenoside. Therefore, pharmacological activities of ginseng should be determined as a wholly concept. In these regards, standardization of ginseng material (fresh ginseng root) should be preceded to the standardization of ginseng products because ginsenoside content and non-saponin active principles such as polysaccharides and nitrogen (N)-containing compound including proteins are significantly different from part to part of the root. In other words, the main root contains less ginsenosides than other lateral or fine roots. Contents of polysaccharides and N-containing compound in main root is higher. However, the quality control of ginseng products focused on non-saponin compounds has limitation in applying to the analytical method, because of the difficult chemical analysis of these compounds. Content of ginsenosides, and ratios of PD/PT and ginsenoside Rb,/Rg, are inversely proportional to the diameter of ginseng root. Therefore, these can be served as the chemical parameters for the indirect method of evaluating from what part of the root does the material originate. Furthermore, contents of polysaccharides and N-containing compounds show inverse relationship to saponin content. Therefore, it seems that index for analytical chemistry of saponin can be applied to the indirect method of evaluating not only saponin but also non-saponin compounds of ginseng. From these viewpoints, it is strongly recommended that quality of ginseng or ginseng products be judged not only by the absolute content of given ginsenoside but also by varieties and compositional balance of ginsenosides, including contents of non-saponin active principles.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether and how the features of performance assessments implemented during integrated science classes are related to teachers' PCK. We observed and video recorded four high school teachers' performance assessment practices, interviewed them, and surveyed their PCK. An analysis of the data shows that the teachers' performance assessment practices differed in terms of assessment of process, diagnosis of student learning progress, feedback, degree of classroom interactions, and use of assessment criteria. In particular, the opportunities for students to participate in assessment actively and use of assessment for learning varied across teachers. Also, relational patterns among science teaching orientations, PCK and performance assessment practices were found. When a teacher aimed at teaching for both academic learning and scientific literacy, sophisticated PCK was shown and assessment practices were complex accordingly. When scientific literacy was emphasized PCK highlighted experiential learning and assessments were not clearly distinguished from learning activities. In contrast, when academic achievement was emphasized traditional teaching strategies and assessments were highlighted. Based on these findings a number of topics for professional development are suggested including strategies for students' active engagement in assessment, use and development of specific assessment criteria, strategies for assessing performance qualities, and intuitive assessment competency development. Further research topics are also suggested.

In the case of On-demand routing protocol in cognitive radio ad-hoc networks, broadcasting of control packets may occur common control channel overload and packet collisions during the routing procedure. This situation is to increase the overhead of path finding and also limited to find the accurate and reliable path. Since reliable channel and path finding is restricted, path life time is shorten and path reliability is reduced. In this paper, we propose a new routing algorithm that reduces control channel overhead and increases path life time by considering the probability of appearance of primary user and channel status of neighbor nodes. Each node performs periodic local sensing to detect primary user signal and to derive primary user activity patterns. The probability of primary appearance on the current channel and the channel status can be obtained based on the periodic sensing. In addition, each node identifies the quality of the channel by message exchange through a common channel with neighbor nodes, then determines Link_Levels with neighbor nodes. In the proposed method, the Link Level condition reduces the number of control messages that are generated during the route discovery process. The proposed method can improve path life time by choosing a path through Path_Reliability in which stability and quality are weighted depending on the location. Through simulation, we show that our proposed algorithm reduces packet collisions and increases path life time in comparison with the traditional algorithm.

In this study, the physicochemical properties of warty black and glutinous rice flours were compared. Crude protein content of waxy black rice flour (9.01%) was higher than than of glutinous rice flour (7.54%). Most mineral contents of waxy black rice flour were higher than those of glutinous rice flour. The major fatty acids in the waxy black and glutinous rice flours were oleic acid (38.57% and 36.95%) and linoleic acid (38.60% and 39.10%). The major detected amino acids of both samples were aspartic acid, glutamic acid and arginine. Water binding capacity of waxy black rice flour (93.26%) was higher than that of glutinous rice flour (87.42%) . Swelling powers and solubilities of waxy black rice flour were lower than those of glutinous rice flour in according to increasing temperatures. Maximum absorbance wavelength (λ$_{max}$) and absorbance at 625 nm were similar between both samples. X-ray diffraction patterns of both samples showed traditional A type as Peaks 2$\theta$ at 15.1$^{\circ}$, 17.1$^{\circ}$, 18.0$^{\circ}$and 23.2$^{\circ}$. The relative crystallinities of waxy black and glutinous rice flours were 0.40 and 0.41, respectively.
This research examines the degree and the patterns of living arrangement transitions and analyzes the factors affecting transitions in living arrangement among elders in Korea. Data came from four-wave panel study of Hallym Aging Research Institute. The first wave was conducted in 2003, and each successive wave occurred exactly 2 years after. Respondents who were aged 60 and over, and had at least one living child were selected for this research. The baseline consisted of 1,907 respondents(2003), then became 985 for the fourth transition interval (2009). A total of 825 who participated both in 2003 and 2009 were used. Binomial logit regression analyses were used to analyze the effects of demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, physical health, cognitive function, psychological well-being, and cultural attitudes toward elder care on transitions in living arrangements. Results show that 29.82% of the elders made transitions in living arrangements from 2003 to 2009, indicating remarkably unstable living situation over this time period. The ratio of living alone is increased from 17.6% to 19.6%, in contrast with decreased ratio of living with married children from 30.5% to 25.2%, and that of living with unmarried children from 19.9% to 13.7%. Factors affecting transitions in living arrangement were different according to types of living arrangement. Elders living with married children were more likely to be older, widowed and to have higher level of psychological well-being and more traditional attitude toward elder care. Elders living alone were more likely to be women, widowed, and to have more chronic diseases and lower level of psychological well-being.
The effects of ultrasonication on phytoplankton were investigated in two ponds in which physicochemical and biological water quality was similar, one as a treatment and the other as a control. The samples were collected from August 18 to September 30 in 2003. Traditional morphological analysis showed that Bacillariophyceae dominated phytoplankton community in both ponds. The abundance of Cyanophyceae was lower in the phytoplankton community of the sonicated pond than that of control pond. We used DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) to analyze the diversity and change of phytoplankton community in two ponds. The DGGE banding patterns of 16S rRNA gene and sequence analysis demonstrated that Oscillatoria acuminata and CFB (Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides) group bacterium appeared in the treated pond, and the control pond was dominated by Synechococcus sp. and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. Especially, Pseudanabaena sp. dominated during the ultrasonic cessation in the treated pond. The DGGE profiles of 18S rRNA gene and sequence analysis showed that the treated pond was dominated by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and the control pond by C. reinhardtii and Pteromonas protracta. In conclusion, the ultrasonication affected the reduced growth of cyanobacteria, particularly Pseudanabaena.

Changes of protein contents and chromatogram patterns by gel filtration chromatography was investigated for the purpose of studying changes of Proteins during softening of persimmon and jujube fruits. Contents of water-soluble and salt-soluble proteins were increased during softening of persimmon and jujube fruits, but that of cell wall-bound proteins was decreased. After performing a gel filtration of water-soluble protein, one peak was separated in mature persimmon fruits and three peaks in soft persimmon fruits. In the case of jujube fruits, there were three peaks in both of mature and soft fruits. Pattern of salt-soluble and cell wall-bound proteins by gel filtration chromatography hardly changed during softening. During softening of two fruits, the contents of water- soluble and salt-soluble proteins appeared to be increased on the same fractions with the decreasing in content of cell wall-bound proteins.
