Monitoring in-service performance of fibre-reinforced foamed urethane sleepers/bearers in railway urban turnout systems

  • Special track systems used to divert a train to other directions or other tracks are generally called 'railway turnout'. A traditional turnout system consists of steel rails, switches, crossings, steel plates, fasteners, screw spikes, timber bearers, ballast and formation. The wheel rail contact over the crossing transfer zone has a dip-like shape and can often cause detrimental impact loads on the railway track and its components. The large impact also emits disturbing noises (either impact or ground-borne noise) to railway neighbors. In a brown-field railway track where an existing aged infrastructure requires renewal or maintenance, some physical constraints and construction complexities may dominate the choice of track forms or certain components. With the difficulty to seek for high-quality timbers with dimensional stability, a methodology to replace aged timber bearers in harsh dynamic environments is to adopt an alternative material that could mimic responses and characteristics of timber in both static and dynamic loading conditions. A critical review has suggested an application of an alternative material called fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU). The full-scale capacity design makes use of its comparable engineering characteristics to timber, high-impact attenuation, high damping property, and a longer service life. A field trial to investigate in-situ behaviours of a turnout grillage system using an alternative material, 'fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU)' bearers, has been carried out at a complex turnout junction under heavy mixed traffics at Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia. The turnout junction was renewed using the FFU bearers altogether with new special track components. Influences of the FFU bearers on track geometry (recorded by track inspection vehicle 'AK Car'), track settlement (based on survey data), track dynamics, and acoustic characteristics have been measured. Operational train pass-by measurements have been analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of the replacement methodology. Comparative studies show that the use of FFU bearers generates higher rail and sleeper accelerations but the damping capacity of the FFU help suppress vibration transferring onto other track components. The survey data analysis suggests a small vertical settlement and negligible lateral movement of the turnout system. The static and dynamic behaviours of FFU bearers appear to equate that of natural timber but its service life is superior.

경부고속철도 토공부에 대한 변형상태 계측 및 분석 (Measurements and Analysis of Deformation States in Roadbed in Gyeongbu High Speed Railway)

  • The function of subgrade in the railway is to support track load on the subgrade as well as train load. Unlike the traditional railway, the uppermost subgrade layer in the Gyeongbu high speed railway was constructed as the reinforced road bed. The reinforced road bed comprises sub-ballast in the upper part and grade ballast in the lower part. The filling material such as soil and rocks in the subgrade can be settled by consolidation of original ground, compression due to self weight, plastic displacement due to train operation, and unequal settlement due to embankment material or improper compaction, therefore many efforts have been given for sufficient compaction and use of proper filling materials in the construction stage. The purpose of this study is to investigate the deformation state of subgrade in the Gyeongbu high speed railway. The investigation on the subgrade settlement was performed by choosing representative sections suspected to be settled based on the previous GPR test results and track maintenance history, measuring the settlement for some time period after installing settlement measuring instruments on and under the reinforced road bed. and analyzing the long-term subgrade settlement data from monitoring system which was installed at the construction stage of the high speed railway.

  • Recently, the development of the paved track is required as a low-maintenance of conventional line. The main reason is that the line capacity and bearing of track are increased progressively. The important factors of paved track are stability and applicability. To be based on this subject, Cement Mortar Pouring(CMP) paved track is developed. CMP paved track is a kind of ballast reinforced track using the prepacked concrete technique. The most important thing to design the paved track is to optimize the track structure considering various conditions. In this study, the CMP track is constructed(30m) on a test line and the track performance tested by running train to evaluation the capability and workability. The track performance are tested to confirm the vibration acceleration of the car body, wheel and track, accumulated settlement, track irregularity and crack of surface.

현장부설시험구간에서의 장기계측을 통한 토목섬유 보강효과 (A Study on Reinforcement Effectiveness for Railway Soft Roadbed through Long-Term Instrumentation on the Field Test)

  • In this study, geotextiles was applied on the selected track-bed, which is relatively economical and efficient way to prevent the problem of mud-pumping and settlement. Field testing sections from Mock-haeng to Dong-ryang in the Chung-La lines in Korea were selected to investigate the state of track and roadbed. And three places were chosen among 1,700 spots where mud-pumping was frequently occurred and maintenance required. At the curved section with radius of 500m between Mock-haeng and Dong-ryang, we divided this testing site into 5 section and 4 different types of geotextile were installed and left the last section with no reinforcement. Total length of the test site was 200m and individual length of each site was 40 m. In order to understand the state and the strength of prepared roadbed, stiffness and physical properties of the roadbed soil were evaluated and analyzed. Also, after the installation, mud-pumping, settlement of elastic or plastic sleeper, failure of track, wheel-loads, lateral force and earth pressures were investigated.

  • The problems associated with constructing high-speed concrete track embankments over soft compressible soil has lead to the development and/or extensive use of many of the ground improvement techniques used today. Drains, surcharge loading, and geosynthetic reinforcement, have all been used to solve the settlement and embankment stability issues associated with construction on soft soils. However, when time constraints are critical to the success of the project, owners have resorted to another innovative approach. Especially, the design criteria of residual settlement is limited as 30mm for concrete track embankment, it is very difficult to satisfy this standard using the former construction method. Pile net method consist of vertical columns that are designed to transfer the load of the embankment through the soft compressible soil layer to a firm foundation and one or more layers of geosynthetic reinforcement placed between the top of the columns and the bottom of the embankment. This paper will present the guidelines for the design of pile net method to supported embankments. These guidelines were developed based on a review of current design methodologies and a parametric study of design variables using numerical modeling.

  • This paper reviewed wave propagation of train vibration based on the study of high speed railway soft ground section with pile slab construction. In a filed of railway, concrete track has been adapted in a railway construction. And in order to maintain its track, soil improving method was required to control residual settlement. Within many soft ground settlement prevention techniques, pile slab method has an effect of minimizing residual settlement of soft ground. This is possible using support embankment load method by construct pile slab or cap the upper soft ground. This paper reviewed vibration wave characteristic of soft ground section with pile slab using numerical analysis application through finite element analysis. Pile slab method is established between high stiffened soft ground and embankment this creates a possibility of vibration block or slab amplification. Thus analyzed of wave propagation was done with roadbed and structure property to confirm application performance of pile slab method of high speed railway structure.

틸팅차량 하중에 의한 레일 이음매 하부 노반침하에 대한 수치 해석적 분석 (Numerical Analysis of the Roadbed Settlement beneath Rail Joint Induced by Tilting-Train Loading)

  • 기존선에 투입되는 틸팅차량은 기존 차량과는 다른 운행 메커니즘을 가지고 있으므로 안정성을 확보하기 위해서는 궤도부담력 및 주행안정성 검토와 노반의 안정성 검토가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 레일 이음매 궤도에 대하여 틸팅차량이 궤도부담력과 주행안정성 검토에서 산정된 허용속도로 운행될 경우 발생하는 노반의 침하량을 수치해석을 통해 검토하였다. 틸팅차량 하중에 의해 발생되는 노반의 침하량과 허용침하량을 비교하여 노반의 안정성을 검토하였으며, 허용침하량과 틸팅차량 하중에 의해 발생하는 침하량의 비를 안전율이라 정의하여 안전율을 검토하였다.

수치해석을 통한 철도노반 인접 굴착 시 궤도틀림 분석 (Numerical Analysis of Track Irregularity in Excavation Adjacent to Railway Trackbed)

  • 본 논문에서는 3차원 수치해석을 통해 철도 노반에 인접한 굴착공사 시 궤도의 틀림을 분석하였다. 철도 노반에 인접한 굴착 공사는 열차 주행에 영향을 미칠 가능성이 높아 공사 시 인접 구조물의 안정성 및 영향성 검토를 필수로 수행하고 있지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 공사에 따른 침하 및 궤도틀림이 지속적으로 보고되고 있다. 굴착공사로 인한 지하수위, 지반의 응력 상태 변화 등은 인접 굴착 공사에 따른 구조물의 침하와 궤도틀림의 원인으로 지적되고 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 인접 굴착 공사 시 궤도 틀림을 유발하는 인자를 변수로 고려하여 수치해석을 수행하였으며 운행 열차를 모사하기 위해 KRL-2012 표준 열차하중을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 열차하중의 위치, 굴착지점과의 거리가 궤도틀림에 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 열차 하중이 작용할 때 궤도 틀림이 크게 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 지하수위의 영향은 크지 않은 것으로 나타났다.

포장궤도 모르터 충진성능 확보를 위한 토목섬유의 적용 (Application of Geotextile to ensure the Motor Pouring Ability for Paved Track)

  • As gravel roadbed is gradually turn down by repetitive loading of train, lasting work for maintenance and management of track is necessary to reduce the settlement of roadbed and the deterioration of track. Despite of above weak point, gravel roadbed has become a basic structure of roadbed at the present time. But request for new structure of roadbed is recently presented to settle an increased transportation capacity of track, and to solve a shortage of the labor to handle maintenance work of track. Therefore, we begin to research about maintenance-free roadbed like paved track from two years ago. In this study, a series of tests were performed to clarify the characteristics of strength and permeability of concrete specimen, which is the upper part of paved track injected by cement mortar, by type of geotextile and finally to give a basic data for application of geotextile to the lower part of paved track.

입도 및 함수비 조건에 따른 철도 노반 재료의 영구침하거동 요소시험평가 (Laboratory Test for Permanent Settlement Behavior of Geo-materials used in Railway Considering Grain size distribution and Water content)

  • 콘크리트궤도의 경우, 허용침하기준이 30mm 이하로 매우 엄격하게 관리되기 때문에, 궤도 하부의 토공노반(강화노반, 상부노반, 하부노반)의 침하에 대한 관리가 필수적으로 요구되고 있다. 이를 위해서는 먼저 이들 노반 재료의 침하특성에 대해 보다 정확한 이해와 자료의 축적이 우선되어야 할 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 노반 재료를 대상으로 대형 오이도미터시험과 삼축압축시험을 통해 여러 입도조건, 함수비 변화조건, 반복하중 조건 등에 의한 장기침하특성을 평가하였다. 강화노반 재료가 설계기준에 적합하게 조성될 경우, 열차하중 하에서 발생되는 침하는 매우 적었다. 한편, 노반재료의 경우 일정 하중 하에서 함수비가 증가할 때, 입도조건에 따라 침하 발생량이 매우 크게 발생할 수 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
